Quins exported their entertaining brand of rugby to the coast of the Indian Ocean as they once again set up a thrilling finish. Unfortunately, this time they failed at the final hurdle with the Sharks winning their first "European" encounter 39-31.

They had to be content with bringing just one point back to London- as well as a midwinter top-up for their tans.

With five minutes left it looked as though five points might be on their way back to Heathrow. Josh Bassett's second try got his side to within one point of victory with Sharks down to 13 as Bongi Mbonambi was shown a yellow and  Ox Nche a red .

Instead, Boeta Chamberlain scored in the final minute to seal the win for the home side.

Ten tries in all - five each. It was entertaining and competitive throughout and the return fixture should be a sell-out.

Josh Bassett had got his side off to the best possible start only for Mbonambi to stroll in as a backhand pass found the Quins defence non-existent from a maul.

Sharks went further ahead when they, scored two more courtesy of the fleet-footed Mapimpi but Will Evans scored from a maul to take the score to 22-14 at the break.

Next score the most important one and it went to the Sharks as  Werner Kok chased down his kick.

However ,  Quins were back in it with the red for Nche's high tackle on Jack Walker followed by the yellow for Mbonambi's indiscipline at the breakdown.

Against his old side Andre Esterhuizen crossed twice. He then set up Bassett for his second only for that match winner from Chamberlain to end Quins's hopes.
