National Sevens Kings 'Kenya Harlequin' stumbled in their defence of the Kisumu 7’s when they could only manage to return from the lakeside city of Kisumu with the Plate trophy. And the Kenya Quins Golf Day ended in the wee hours of Saturday morning... Quins began day 1 on a disastrous note losing 17-14 to upstarts Strathmore barely 3 hours after jetting into Kisumu. Thereafter they settled and regained their composure by blanking Kenya Poly and USIU. This saw them qualify for the main cup quarters where they were set to meet long time rivals Impala.

Day 2 saw Quins put everything in their game versus Impala but it was not enough to see the young Quins through in a game where they dominated but the tries eluded them. 7-5 was the score in favour of Impala. The young guns then recharged and went all the way to the Plate final where they exacted revenge on Strathmore 15-0 to claim some form of silverware.

Driftwood will be the next round in Mombasa on the 7th and 8th of October where again Quins are the defending champions. This time round the boys will be ready to battle.

The Annual Quins Golf tournament played at the Royal Nairobi Golf was a huge success with close to100 golfers turning up to inculcate themselves in what being a Quin was all about. As with all golfers they had only one thing on the mind and that was golf and who bogeyed the most. Pro Richard Ainley took top honours on the men’s side while Matyres scooped the ladies honours. Stan Ramogo had a debut and a half on the course. The less said the better. All in all it was a good day out there and credit to Sammy Muraya and his team for the superb organisation.

Once the presentations were done all action shifted back to the Quins clubhouse where the meat and drinks flowed till very very very late. And that was where the golfers had their orientation in how to be very very very tired. The 19th hole at the Quins clubhouse was the climax of the event. A big thanks to the various sponsors and players who turned up. Neat year promises to be bigger and better.

Quick One: A prominent Superior Quins member found himself on the wrong side of the law in Kisumu during the sevens tournament. As he prepared to spend a night as a guest of the state, one of the cops asked him which club he played for. On mentioning Quins the officer recalled that there used to be a Quin who was their boss who liked singing the Quins anthem. If the member could sing that anthem and prove truly he was a Quin, then he might not have to spend the night in the cells. And our member being a true Quin, he sang himself out of jail….…

”When Quins take the rugby park, give us strength to score the tries. They are weak but Quins are mighty, guide us in for victory’s side. Quins are sure, strong, superior,,, give them till they want no more want no more….give them till they want no more!!!”

Moral of the story: LEARN THE QUINS ANTHEM. IT WILL DEFINITELY KEEP YOU OUT OF JAIL (NOT OUT OF TROUBLE).
