Daly Scores At The Ricoh

When Wasps moved to the midlands from Adams Park no-one could have expected quite hom much support there would be from people in the area.  Thousands of new fans have joined the Wasps family and joined us in supporting the most exciting team in the Country.  Here is the story of two of them...

So, it was back in October 2014 and I was at the Office. I had a spare 5 mins towards the end of the day and was perusing the BBC Website when this article came up/sparked my interest. 

Wasps Move to Coventry

I'm not going to lie, I wasn't the biggest follower of Rugby. I had played as a kid/teen for Wolverhampton RUFC, but once my playing days were over my interest diminished and I only really sought out the occasional England game when it was on telly. Yet this article, although brief sparked my interest. The mighty Wasps were moving to the midlands! Surely this was a joke? A non-starter? It couldn't be true? I read on, looked for related articles and began to understand the reasoning, the history and why; ultimately Wasps made their decision. 

Although my knowledge of domestic rugby was pretty poor, there were 2 stand out clubs that I admired growing up learning the game. The first was Leicester Tigers, the most successful local (I say local, its still 60 miles away from where I live!) club and Wasps, because they seemed to win everything around that time when I was playing. Now don't get me wrong, Leicester were successful, they were local (relatively) and I had the good fortune of even going to a few of their home games, but I never connected, I never took more than a passing interest and that was that. Wasps however, were something else, something different entirely. Ok, they were from London. Yes, they were named after an insect nobody likes, but I liked them. Maybe it was because they played in black (like New Zealand) but a connection was made watching them win european glory from a clubhouse T.V in Wolverhampton. 

Fast forward a number of years to me sitting at my desk and I can hardly believe my eyes. Wasps, the club I most admired as a child, were moving to Coventry, a commutable 30 miles away! That evening I told my wife and (maybe she saw the glint of excitement in my eyes) she suggested I get tickets for the first game at the Ricoh, which I duly did. 

We went to the game and loved every second. Wasps won and won well, my wife enjoyed the Rugby (much to my surprise) and the nearby shops (typical woman). She suggested we come again, for the following game, and we did. 

So jumping again to the present day, We are now a season ticket holders and have been to every game thus far at the Ricoh. We had the good fortune to cheer on the boys in Toulon and now we have just renewed our season tickets for the forthcoming season. We follow news articles with bated breath, follow the players on twitter and generally love being part of the Wasps family. 

Now that brings me nicely onto the real point of this post. The Wasps family. From the very beginning we have been made to feel welcome and part of something special. Everyone has been kind and welcoming, friendly and knowledgable and this has helped us in our transition as newbie Waspies. So a big thank you to the club, a big thank you to the players but mostly a big thank you to the Wasps family, for making a midlands lad's connection, forged in a dirty clubhouse in Wolverhampton, mean something special, even now.
