Not long ago Wasps were on the brink of bankruptcy. It could easily have seen the end of one of the biggest names in Rugby Union, but thankfully a few brave and generous souls stepped in and effectively rescued the club from oblivion.
They had their work cut out, the coffers were empty, the squad had shrunk to the point where it struggled to put out a team, and the situation at our ground was perilously close to falling apart. No-one outside of the inner sanctum knew quite how bad it was, because those people fixing things didn’t waste time talking about it. They just got on and did what needed doing.
The squad is bigger, and closer knit than before, our financial situation is stable, and there is even talk of a new home for Wasps, but it would seem that ignoring the fans has become a habit.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for everything that has been done to ensure I still have a club to support, but come on guys. The season is almost upon us and we haven’t even announced our captain yet. We are the only club in the Premiership to not have a new kit out there, do we even have one?
Attendance figures have been worryingly low over the last year or two, and it’s been really nice to see the club making efforts to bring in new fans, but there is no point in bringing in new fans if you are alienating the old guard. It is us that buy the kit (eventually), it is us who have the season tickets, it is the old dedicated fans who travel around Europe to wear the Black and Gold in every stadium we can.
Start talking to us Wasps, or maybe when you eventually do you’ll find there’s no-one there to listen.
what have the following all got in common?
- sponsorship
- new club captain
- ground
MONEY!
because
Sponsorship is about getting as much in for as long as we can get it - not forgetting our ambitions should make us a more attractive club to sponsor as we continue to develop
New Club Captain - tied in with a new contract for someone we want to make captain, or perhaps a condition that someone stays
Ground - needs a business plan to show we would be better off financially with one. That broadly includes match day experience as well as results
so don't get why the above means that the club are not listening to the fans - a massive improvement on previous regimes for sure
and the key?
bums on seats, which is
keeping existing supporters - which we know if not enough by itself, because otherwise we would not be in this position
so, getting new ones in
so, i for one support the efforts being made by the club - was quite a hole to dig ourselves out of for sure.
BTW - absolutely nothing to do with the set up - though am a long-standing STH
