Twitter all seems a bit controversial here at the moment, especially with the news that Smithy has said that he will no longer post on this board and "only " wants to use Twitter.
I am not alone, I think, in not wanting to join Twitter or Facebook. OK so it's free, but I don't keep my mobile or my computer switched on 24/7 - I have a life away from technology.. and when you live out in the sticks, the technology doesn't always work! And frankly having looked at a selection of Tweets, I don't want to know when folks have got up/ what they had for tea/what the weather is doing/when they've had a skinful etc etc. In my opinion there is a lot of dross on Twitter.
I have to admit that what little of I have seen of Smithy's tweets is mostly rugby orientated and promoting his articles in the Journal & Chronicle. Again as I live outside the catchment area of the paper, I pick up his articles online - not all Falcon Fans live on Tyneside. Some of us give up quite a bit of time and have to make an effort to follow the Falcons up and down the country.
It's his decision of course, but I for one want won't be joining!
Just because you have a computer or other form of access doesn't mean you need to look at it all day and all night. I can fully understand why he doesn't post on here with so much negativity and in a similar position would probably have done likewise
Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with friends & for me sending message to mates on facebook is superior, simpler & cleaner than your run of the mill email.
Twitter for me is more about getting information, news or posting about a topic. I have used various messageboards over the years covering dance music, football & rugby & it is fair to say Twitter is a lot friendlier when needing info or asking someone a question.
Messagboards have more of a community feel & like most communities they have there characters & they create debates/arguments more than Facebook & Twitter.
I don't really see what's so unreasonable about Smithy's request frankly. Anyone who wants his input and news can either go on Twitter or buy the newspaper. What's the problem?
I remember some IT advertising slogan about "communication at the speed of thought", but I now think we've got communication faster than the speed of thought. Instead of seeing something, thinking about it and reacting, we've now got seeing, reacting and forgetting about the thinking part.
Or is this just the ramblings of a recently-turned-40 bloke who's getting weft behind?
