Few people will now be unaware of the fate of First Division runners-up Airdrie, but in case you missed the news, KPMG (Airdrie's administrator) announced this morning (May 1st) that the club has gone into liquidation. The club has been for sale for the last two season, but no buyers were prepared to cover the £3 million debts the Lanarkshire had accumulated.

But what does this all mean for other teams in the SFL?

Falkirk who finished second bottom in the First Division will not now be relegated to maintain a 10 club division. Stenhousemuir who should also have been relegated, but to the Third Division will also stay up. Ironically, Stenhousemuir's new manager, John McVeigh, was a legend at Airdrie. In a recent quote in the Daily Record he said:

"I can speak on behalf of everyone here when I say we don't want this to have happened. It's terrible."

Scottish League secretary Peter Donald confirmed that if Airdrie go into full liquidation then they will lose their membership of the league and SFA. As a result this will mean that one extra place will be open for a another team to join the SFL. Favourite teams include Gretna, Gala Fairydean, Whitehill Welfare, Devronvale and Frazerburgh.

Gretna, who play in the English Unibond League, seem to be the hot favourites to move in to Division Three. They are managed by former Morton favourite (and QoS boss) Rowan Alexander. Alexander told The Daily Record that:

"We have chapped on the door a few times and we are ready to put in our application.

"Our facilities should meet their criteria. The pitch is up to FA Cup standard and we have a 250-seat stand."

Should Gretna join the league there will be three senior teams from Dumfries & Galloway in the SFL. Maybe Border TV will finally give the Scottish teams the media coverage they deserve.
