Harsh Penalty

Town manger Joe Royle and former Town defender John McGreal both agree that it was harsh to award Town a penalty today.

Michael Duff brought Down Town striker Alan Lee and referee Darren Deadman awarded Town a penalty which Matt Richards converted to give Town a 2-1 win.

Town manager Joe Royle: “It looked a soft penalty to me but then the lads say we should have had one in the first-half when one of their players used his hands to block a shot, sometimes it happens that way but we were on the wrong end of a shocking decision when Leeds were awarded a penalty here a few weeks ago so perhaps there is a levelling up somewhere.

“We certainly deserved to win the game, that's for sure.”

McGreal added: “A draw was always a possibility but the penalty was very debatable. We were very disappointed about it.

“The lads said that Wayne had simply gone up to the referee and asked him why he'd given the penalty. It seems the referee took offence and gave him his second yellow card.”
