Former Ipswich Town midfielder Bobby Petta could be joining championship sides Wigan Athletic or Leeds United after being turned down by Bolton.

The 30-year-old who will be best remembered by Town fans for two goals against Norwich in 1998, was released by Scottish giants Celtic and then went on trial at premiership side Bolton but did not do enough to earn himself a contract although he believes that is because Sam Allardyce didn’t see him during his four days there.

Petta: “Remarkably enough, I did not get the chance to prove myself during a practice game, last Thursday, my agent called me all of a sudden to tell me that the trial was over.

“I think that Bolton see more in heart patient Khalilou Fadiga.

“They have him under contract and now they want to go on with him after all,” Petta now claims to of had contact from Wigan and Leeds adding: “The past few days, Leeds United and Wigan Athletic have called me, Wigan manager Paul Jewell especially wants to sign me very badly.

“Wigan are second in the Championship and have a good chance of being promoted to the Premiership.

“The chance that I will go to that club is reasonably big.”
