Town extended their lead at the top of the championship table for a short time after coming back from 2-0 down to earn a draw at Crewe.

Town extended their lead at the top of the championship table for a short while after coming back from 2-0 down to earn a draw at Crewe.

The leagues leading scorer Dean Ashton scored both the Crewe goals bringing his total to 17 for the season, the first came on 24 minutes after David Vaughan raced passed both Jim Magilton and Jason De Vos and found Ashton who blasted the ball past Kelvin Davis.

Three minutes later Ashton added a second after Kenny Lunt caused chaos at the back for Town and found Ashton in almost the same place as the first goal with the same devastating result.

Town wasted what chances they had during the first half, Kevin Horlock, Darren Bent and Shefki Kuqi all wasting good chances to give Town a goal before half time.

The second half was completely different for Town as they came out looking for a goal and could of got one from the most unlikely of players, Kelvin Davis’ long kick bounced over Clayton Ince early in the second half only for Ince to redeem himself by clearing the ball a yard from the goal line.

Darren Bent was unlucky not to bring Town back into the game his effort in the 55th minute was parried out for a corner by Clayton Ince. Richard Naylor converted the resulting corner to give Town hope of getting something out of the game.

Four minutes later Darren Bent made up for not scoring earlier buy scoring one of the hardest goals of his career, lobbing the bouncing ball over Ince and into the net with half an hour left.

Town had chances to get all three points Ian Westlake had a chance cleared off the line and one saved by Ince while Shefki Kuqi also couldn’t find a way past Ince as Crewe held on for a point.

Town went two points clear of Wigan at the top of the championship but have no been replaced by Wigan who put 5 past Preston North End this afternoon.
