Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has been appointed Town's new manager, signing a two year contract. Keane, best known for his time at Manchester United where he captained the club for a number of years before moving onto Celtic for a season, where he ended his playing career. Keane re-entered the football world in 2006 becoming Sunderland manager. He guided Sunderland to the Premiership in his first season and finished 15th in the top flight the following year, but a poor start to this season saw him leave Sunderland in December.

Town owner Marcus Evans: "I am delighted that Roy has agreed to join us and we are completely aligned in our ambitions for Ipswich Town.

"He has extensive contacts in the game and is a proven winner who encourages his team to play the attractive football that Ipswich Town fans have come to expect. I believe he is the right man to take this Club where we want to be - the Premier League."

Town Chief Executive Simon Clegg added: "The appointment of Roy Keane further demonstrates our commitment to help Ipswich Town Football Club achieve our aim of returning to the Premier League at the earliest possible opportunity. Roy has experienced promotion as Championship winners as a manager and, importantly then kept his side in English football's top flight and I am looking forward to working with him."

Roy Keane himself added: "I truly believe that I am joining a Club that has the potential, ambition and infrastructure to once again be a Premier League side. The Club's owner and Chief Executive impressed upon me their total focus on achieving this quest at the earliest opportunity and I can't wait to get started."

Oh dear. Oh deary me. I'm not overly enamoured with this appointment. With his temperament it's like spinning a roulette wheel. Let's think about what he did at Sunderland. He took a combative side that could also play a bit, up. Now I think all the combative sides who can also play a bit go up. look at Watford, Stoke and Wolves for instance. As soon as Sunderland got there what happened? You need a bit more and so it was over to Roy to re-shape for the Premier league. We all know what happened next. I suppose it'll be interesting viewing to see if he can turn our perennial softies into a combative unit and Roy working with work-a-holic David Norris will also be of interest. Personally I'd rather have seen Kev Keegan appointed or even Leggi's favourite, David O'Leary but hey ho.

Well, it's us off to a great start but don't forget, you usually get an extra 10% from any team when a new boss comes in. However, I'm preparing to eat some humble pie as I've been reading a few articles of late concerning Roy and it was a good start so maybe I'll need some custard with that humble pie!
