Town Legend John Wark says Town need to spend some of Marcus Evans' millions in the summer if they are to stand a chance of promotion next season. Wark played for Town in three different spells making more then 550 appearances scoring 135 goals and winning the FA and UEFA Cups before moving to Liverpool where he won two League Championships, he returned to Town before joining Middlesbrough before returning to Town where he won the Division Two championship to book Town a place in the first ever premiership season and he feels if Town are to book a place in the Premiership for 2009/2010 they will need to spend some money.

Wark: "If I were in Jim Magilton's shoes I would be looking to rebuild the spine of the Ipswich team in readiness for what I expect to be an even tougher promotion battle next season," said Wark.

"The way I see it, Jim needs to bring in a goalkeeper, a central defender, a midfield 'digger' and a decent striker to give the current squad what it needs to become capable of winning promotion.

"It's hardly a secret that Town need a keeper - the on-loan Stephen Bywater did little to convince me that he is the man for the job - and Jason de Vos must also be replaced.

"I'd like to see a Claude Makelele-type midfielder introduced, someone to do the donkey work in front of the back four, and a striker in the David Nugent mould would also go down well.

"I know the Championship was close last season, but I don't think that made it a good league. For me the standard was pretty ordinary and because I expect it to be stronger next time round it follows that I believe Ipswich will have to be a fair bit better to improve their promotion chances.

"It can be done, I've no doubt about that, but Jim needs to find the right players at the right prices if he is going to make his own, as well as owner Marcus Evans', dream come true."

Hmmm, I'm not convinced we need to "spend" we need to spend wiseley like Burley did at Derby, buying quality players on the cheap from eastern europe.
