Report: Town 0-1 Pompey

Town's unbeaten home run came to end earlier as Premiership side Portsmouth beat Town 1-0 in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. The visitors were the quicker side out of the blocks with Hreidarsson and Kanu both having early chances.

Referee Mark Halsey ruined the game after 24 minutes when he showed Liam Trotter a straight red card for a foul on Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes.

David Nugent replaced Mendes at the start of the second half and made an impression pretty quickly, scoring the games only goal when he latched onto a long ball from Portsmouth defence.

Nugent had a chance to score his second of the day but his volley hit the bar with Alexander rooted to his line. Utaka made perhaps one of the worst misses of the season when he fired the ball wide of goal from three yards out with no Town players around him.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes Town went looking for a goal with Alan Lee coming off the bench to replace Gavin William's and Lee nearly scored with a header from Owen Garvan's free kick only for David James to pull off a magnificent save to deny the Town striker. Richard Naylor came on in the final minute as Town put another body upfront but another good save from James kept the ball out of the net and made sure Portsmouth went into the draw for the 4th round.
