Let's Put Things Right

Nils Mordt

By Blues Ed
November 27 2014

Thank goodness we have a B&I Cup opportunity to get things back on track. Doncaster Knights are unbeaten in the competition and will provide stern Friday night  opposition  ...

That is just what is needed following the nine try embarassment at the Mennaye Field last week against "fellow strugglers" Cornish Pirates.

A decent win could mean we might even qualify for the next round, but a decent performance is vital if we are to restore confidence for the league campaign.

Once again the Sarries tie-up comes into force with Mike Ellery starting on the wing and  Nils Mordt at fly half.

We also have James Pritchard back from international duty with Canada and Henry Staff is in the centre.

Prop Johnny Harris is on loan from Irish and will be on the bench, while Tom Williams, TJ Harris, Harry Wells and Hayden Thompson-Stringer all start.

Blues: James Pritchard, Pat Tapley, Henry Staff, Viliami Hakalo, Mike Ellery, Nils Mordt, Darryl Veenendaal, Tom Williams, TJ Harris, Camilo Parilli-Ocampo, . Harry Wells, Ben Gulliver, Paul Tupai, Justin Blanchet,  Hayden Thompson-Stringer.

Reps: Charlie Clare,  Johnny Harris, James Currie, Mike Howard, Josh Buggea, Peter White, Jake Sharp

Looking forward to tomorrows game. No disrespect but I thought we lost the game up there as opposed to Doncaster winning it.
The usual slow start and big push in the 2nd half but we'd left ourselves to much to do.

I think the boys will front up tomorrow and I'm looking forward to a good win.

Slightly surprised that Toops was put in front of the camera for the pre-match vid. Should have been the 'Head Coach' IMO, particularly when talking about the Pirates game. Let's hope there is a bit more leadership from the 'Ham Sandwich' brigade tonight. They can't hide anymore and should be measured on results. Enough said.

Good interview IMO, he was very honest didn't duck anything or make excuses. It must have been very for him talking about Sundays game but I thought he handled it well. Fair play to him.

I thought he was uncomfortable with the whole thing, but stuck it out till the end. It's funny how people see things differently. Like I said the 'Ham Sandwich' brigade should be measured on results, they need to put it right tonight. Otherwise it'll be more rubbish to read on here over the weekend and coming week I'm afraid.

Handling simply not good enough. Very disappointing

Basic skills! How many knock ons? How many line outs lost? Backs scuttling diagonally then passing the ball out out until they ran out of space. Not the way to win the fans back. I am afraid that some of the other local teams, including the younger Blues teams will be getting my custom until things looks up.

Yes some people look for the positives and some for the negatives. However it's hard to find any positives from tonights game. Not only are we looking a poor side we've also become boring. So much for the reaction.

IB - the coaches are a laughing stock, it's time for them to step aside. Plus we need to stop these pre match videos they are laughable.

JW apart from the backs coach they are the same coaches we've had for the last 10 years. They haven't suddenly become bad coaches.

The way I see it, in the last two years we've signed and held onto, very average players.

Most of them just are'nt good enough for this level. Which is why I believe we'll be in league 1 next season.

Well you'd like to think so, maybe they should drop now considering the dross we're being asked to watch. If I hadn't paid out for out for a season ticket I'd don't think I'd bother going.

I can see the coaching debate going on, but you know what I think. Recruitment has generally been poor coupled with some poor retention and contract termination decisions. All of this is down to the Head Coach. We haven't been able to turn over the promoted Donnie, we lost a pre-season game to to relegated Ealing. The writing is on the wall. A relegation dog fight.

Coming off the back of a 9-try hammering, last night's performance was truly pitiful.

The team look utterly demoralised and leaderless. We have become so two dimensional in attack it's mind-numbingly depressing.

The fact that we got 2000 last night is testament to the strength of rugby in Bedford, but it won't last forever.

So the "Head Coach" sets the budget now, does he?

Until the man at the top moves on this is a club in limbo. I think we will nick another three or four wins to stay up this season but I'm not at all confident about next.

For what it's worth, I would keep Mike Rayer as I can't see who could be brought in at this stage of the season to do a better job with one hand tied behind his back but I would get rid of Messrs Hynes, Larkin and Vass.

I despair. Never looked like winning the game. Artfulbadger is completely correct on his analysis. No penetration by the backs. No leadership. However I still believe its staring the Blues in the face. How can a few evenings training each week provide the same conditioning, organisation and ball skill practice as a full time outfit. Seems to me its the ostrich syndrome. I do not necessarily believe that the players are not good enough. It is the management, and SOME of the coaching staff that have to take responsibility.

He spends the money, decides who stays and who goes, decides our game plan, so he's ultimately responsible. Like I've said on many occasions, it's all to cosy in the ivory tower and appears to be a job for the boy's. Think there needs to be a board meeting sooner rather than later.

But he can only spend what he's given, and by all accounts that isn't very much. I think it would be a very sad day if we lost Mike, who would come in on the same resources?

As for the players it's not the fact that their not good enough their just not upto it at this level.

We've always had the same model at Bedford recruiting talented players from the lower leauges. But there is such a huge gap now between the leagues that it dosen't work anymore

For the last couple of years, as I see it, we have had an entire team of journeyman players but we have lacked the shining stars with real class who used to give us a bit of magic, or get us cheering and clapping. In the backs, we have had the likes of Billy Twelvetrees, Josh Bassett and even Mark Atkinson. Aaron Morris might have been another one, but will we ever see him again? Nathan Earle would surely have done the job, if he had not been injured and if we had been allowed to keep him. Who in the present squad do you really look forward to seeing?

Darryl, Billy Moss, Joe VDM. Like the look of Hayden Stringer last night to. One less knock on and it could have been very different but that's sport. COYB.

I think the swingometer is in our favour, with regards management change. It simply cannot continue as it stands at the moment. It's rudderless with no leadership on the field or off it.

It's not like we've suddenly just started playing badly is it? or am I imagining it.
Been going on now for a while.

To be honest getting a bit sick of COYB's crew and if you say something bad against the management or players it's wrong!

It's not wrong, not wrong at all!

Our current status is we're rubbish! and getting worse!

now now, please stop the bickering etc

We all have different opinions etc but the name calling needs to stop!

At the end of the day we all love and we all care about the blues, born out by our frustrations

I'd like to think that the ethics and ethos of rugby would be extended to this forum i.e we can agree to disagree, move on and still be friendly with each other

That's an end to it!!!!!

The thing that I find most worrying is the lack of a statement of support in MR the coaching staff and the players from the Board.

Now I would doubt as a supporter of the Blues that I would receive any communication but as a shareholder I think the very least I am entitled to would be 'The Chairman and the Board are in full support current Management and team....'
