Town boss Mick McCarthy has admitted that he would like to add a new centre back to his Portman Road squad during the January transfer window.

Following the decision of Danny Higginbotham to sign for Sheffield United rather than extend his loan at Portman Road, the club are left with just two senior central defenders in academy product Tommy Smith and former Nottingham Forest man Luke Chambers, and whilst McCarthy believes the pair have done well, he knows that cover is going to be required at some point.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, the former Sunderland boss said: "The fragile nature of the team means the spine is there – but we have the two of them and no one else. They are not the biggest, but they are two good competitors who have been excellent. I have been delighted with them."

On the subject of possibly signing some of his former players from fellow Championship side Wolverhampton Wandrerers, McCarthy stayed guarded: “I have been linked with a lot of the Wolves players. One, because they are good players. And two, because I have managed them."

McCarthy has already stated that he expects January to be a busy month at Porman Road with a number of targets in mind, wit signing DJ Campbell on a full move being right at the top of his priority list.
