Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has hailed his side as they beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Portman Road, a result which sees the club out of the relegation zone in the Npower Championship.

Guirane N’Daw opened the scoring for Town on the half hour mark before former Southampton striker Dexter Blackstock got Forest back on terms just shy of the hour mark. Just two minutes later Town were back ahead after DJ Campbell's penalty was followed up by the recalled Luke Hyam, scoring his first senior goal for the club, before sub Daryl Murphy made sure of all three points in the final moments.

Speaking of the result, Town boss McCarthy said: "It was a great result and I think we deserved it. It was a good performance and there are signs of improvement.

"They scored a good goal to get back level but we responded quickly. I’m not sure if it was a penalty but we will take it and Luke followed up superbly to score when DJ’s kick was saved."

Hyam was later confirmed as man of the match after an impressive performance at Portman Road and later spoke about the amazing feeling of scoring his first goal for the club he supported as a kid and earnt glowing praise from Town boss McCarthy who led Town to their third win during his spell as manager to date.

Speaking after the game in the post match press conference, McCarthy said of Hyam: "Luke deserved his man of the match award, even more so for following the ball in and getting his goal.

"The two lads in the middle were excellent. Gi's (Guirane N’Daw) goal was a great finish from a yard! He was excellent.  Everyone told me what he couldn’t do when I arrived but he’s been terrific for us. I tried to sign him when I was at Wolves so I know he can play." 

There was special praise also reserved for debutant Tyrone Barnett: “Tyrone Barnett did well for us as well but there were good performances all over the park. If we play like that and work like that, we will win a lot more games this season.”
