Town boss Mick McCarthy says that last night's 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the Football League Championship at Selhurst park illustrates just how much work needs to be done at the club.

Town won McCarthy's first game in charge 1-0 against Birmingham, but a poor defensive display yesterday evening let to a hammering for his side in which they gave away three penalties and never looked like getting anything out of the game.

Speaking after the game to the Official Club Website, McCarthy said: “If people thought it was going to be all sweetness and light after the win at Birmingham, they were sadly misguided.

“It was a sobering experience, to lose in that manner but it has not changed my thoughts on the job here. I was fully aware of the task ahead before tonight.  Palace are a different proposition to Birmingham to be fair. They are a very good side and full of confidence. 

“I thought we could take them on and for a while it worked. There wasn’t anything in the first-half but we made a mistake for their goal and then plenty more mistakes in the second-half. 

“The players have said that they weren’t penalties but players say that. I’ll look at the video before making a judgment on that but I’ve been here five days now and they’ve been a long five days. We’ve got a fair bit of work to do.”
