Newcastle United goal keeper Steve Harper is keen to be offered a loan deal in order to get first team football. The 37 year old who hasn’t played this season after being overtaken in the pecking order firstly by Tim Krul and then Rob Elliot, who is currently making the bench on a weekly basis, has a year left on his contract with the club. 

Harper, who has been at the club for 19 years, said of the situation;

“I'd welcome the chance of a loan because I need to play to stay sharp. I've got another year on my contract after this season and I've got no thoughts of retiring yet.

Tim has the potential to go on and have a fantastic career. The good thing about him is he willing to listen and learn.

But I want to play, though whether anything can happen I don't know. It is a bit tight now. I got a call from Brighton earlier in the season. People might have been surprised, thinking I wanted to stay closer to home, but I had a really good time there under a fantastic young manager Gus Poyet.

I think there are a few mini-leagues across the top two divisions but there isn't much difference between the top teams in the Championship and the bottom five clubs in the Premier League.

People probably expected us to struggle when we came up and again this season but it's credit to the manager and the players we're having a fantastic season.”

Would love him to stay as he would be a great back up, but I think the club should let him go on a free as he has been a brilliant servant to us. He still has a lot to offer and for a championship team would be a great signing

He needs to stay for his 20th anniversary so a loan would be better.
