CC Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Nottingham Forest v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
September 20 2011

Newcastle United travel to Nottingham Forest this evening in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup. Forest have had a poor start to the season, losing their last three consecutive games, winning just two and drawing one of their last six in all competitions. Newcastle’s season on the other hand has started brightly and they are yet to lose a league game.

Newcastle have won three and drawn three of their last six in all competitions.

Forest will be without Chris Cohen (knee), Paul Anderson (hamstring), George Boateng (ankle) as well as Dexter Blackstock (knee ligament) and Gareth McCleary (knee) who are out long-term.

Manager Steve McClaren is expected to make changes to the side which lost at the weekend, whilst Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is also likely to make changes to the side which drew with Aston Villa at the weekend.

Pardew is expected to give Hatem Ben Arfa (ankle) pitch time as he recovers from injury, whilst Dan Gosling (groin) is also expected to feature. Krul may start on the bench, giving Rob Elliot his chance in goal.

Pardew is without Alan Smith (hamstring), Haris Vuckic (broken wrist) and Mike Williamson (broken arm).

Davide Santon will miss out on his senior debut once again due to a knee injury which he picked up last week

Fact: Newcastle have won four of their last five matches against Nottingham Forest. Scored 11 goals and conceded 2.

Fact: Nottingham Forest last knocked a top flight league club out of the cup in 1993 when they beat Manchester United in the 4th Round.

Make 9 changes to a squad that played brilliantly at Villa, including a bunch of players who probably aren't completely match fit and now we're on to penalties after surrendering three leads including one in extra time...

Taking the competition seriously, eh?

What a belta, colo. What were we worried about.

Gamble worked, no injuries that I have heard about. Good run outs for four players in Marv, Arfa, Gosling and Ferguson. Will be a big boost having them back in the fold.

Good cup tie.

Definitely good to see this squad get through without injuries. Great to see HBA get 70 minutes. I'm very much looking forward to seeing him live! I was at a pub league match when he scored that goal against EFC. (Sm18)

To be honest Tunyc the Elliot signing has baffled me from day one but suppose 500k for third choice keeper (hopefully) isnt too bad. Just not sure what is happening with the Harper situation.

I will take the positives out if it.

Elliot has been brought in to replace foster for a quarter of Foster's future fee and in all honestly is probably a better option after seeing some of Foster's recent performances!

As for taking the competition seriously, i think they are we just needed to rotate the squad and get players time on the pitch to build up match sharpness, we also need to protect or central defender's, Saylor would have been rested due to his recent injury problems and also he's 3 yellow's off getting a ban!

I've seen the highlights and I completely disagree, mental. Eliot was at fault for the first and third goals. Look at Colo's reaction to the third-the cross is a foot away from him but he didn't touch it because he was sure Eliot had it. The second took a kind bounce for them but he was slow off his line. We've all had bad days at the office, though, and I hope this performance was down to nerves.

Just knowing that Forster nailed down a spot at Celtic makes me imagine he's a decent keeper. SPL competition may not be great but I have trouble believing it's worse than Forest. But since he looks set to leave, it seems most have the knives out for him-going so far as to claim to prefer Eliot even after last night's horror show, the only appearance he's ever made for us. This despite the fact that Eliot is two years older and should be more polished. Then there's the tendency to fixate on Forster's poor preseason which again seems strange compared to how many times I've been told to wait for Ba to come good, that it will happen and that I should ignore his horrible preseason and lackluster early season appearances-again despite the fact that Ba is a much more experienced professional.

Tunyc,

I work in scotland and regularly watch Foster playing for Celtic, some of his performances make his preseason form look good, as to why he went straight into celtic's first team is a question that many celtic fans ask most weekends, he's a very unpopular signing amongst many fans!

There was a joke going around last season when the letter bombs were being sent to lennon and other players/fans that if one had of been sent to Foster he would have been ok because he wouldn't have come out to collect it!

For his size he doesn't command the box as he should, his shot stopping is good but if it came back out to an opposition striker he hasn't the mobility to get back into a position to save the second or third shot i could go on but i'm not going to!

I'm in no doubt that in a few years he could be a top class keeper but he has a lot to learn adn from what he's said doesn't want to learn it from playing in the reserves!

We've obviously decided to cash in on him and bring in a player of similar quality who costs less and is happy to sit on the bench until we sell him on!

It was the lads first game, so I am not going to get carried away, I saw the goals and I think he looked cr@p, but then it is earlier days. To me Forster looks a far better keeper, but he isn't happy to sit on the bench or be 3rd choice where Elliot will be. I suppose the big thing will be at the end of the season, if Harper is allowed to go, Forster goes so then do we stick with Elliot as back up.

AP defo done the right decision giving Krul the No.1 slot, as this was a talking point before the season.

I like he has given some players games and getting Ben Arfa time to get fit, once we play a decent team he will play our strongest team, AP will defo want to go on a cup run and was talking this morning on Sky Sports about looking at fixtures around the 4th round.

Not only did Harper not make the bench at Forest, he didn't even feature in the reserve game at Chesterfield. According to True Faith he was in a field watching his son play.

Steve has been frozen out. The only reason I can see for this is that he was one of Hughton's senior players. This is pretty shitty behaviour towards a guy who served for years and years as understudy to Given (could've played for England if he went elsewhere), now he's third choice behind Rob @#$%& Elliot (we might even go with Soderberg instead of him)? So much for loyalty.

Unless there has been a bust up with the club and I suppose we will see come Jan transfer window.

Maybe he wasn't happy to sit on the bench again after warming it for so long under Given

He'd fill the backup spot if asked. He may not want that but he's too good a professional to do otherwise.

The clearout of that lippy "Players Committee" continues.

Harper would as he is a true professional unlike some of the cr@p that we have had, but if a bust up has happened, then maybe the manager has made the decision to remove him. I suppose only time will tell
