Fear & Loathing In Sunderland (Part 1)

It started like so many of these things, at the time of night where beer turns into whiskey and everything suddenly seems a great idea. I was busy explaining to a Sunderland fan everything that was wrong with his side, his city and if I remember correctly his life. When he supplied the comment of, “I bet you have never even been to Sunderland?"

“Of course I have, several times.”

“Not including Roker Park or the stadium of light? I mean Sunderland itself?”

I allowed that he may have a point. I had never been to Sunderland.

In my defence though I have never actually had a reason to go to Sunderland, I have never worked there, don’t know anyone there. And always figured that if it was a nice place someone would have said, ‘you know you should go to Sunderland.’

In all my 40 odd years on the planet no-one has.

I did once nearly go, me and a mate had been drinking quite heavily and I was complaining that I could never set the timer on the video properly. We decided and by we I mean me, that it might be an idea to invent a time machine so I could travel back in time and catch the episode of Top Gear I had missed. I mean compared to the timer on a video, time travel would be a doddle.

Anyway he said there was a computer store in Sunderland and we went off in a taxi. About half way there I took to explaining to the driver what we were doing, and do you know? When I explained it out loud it sounded stupid.

So we turned around and was deposited at home, where the wife suggested we get sky plus and it might be an idea to take a responsible adult out with me the next time I fancied a pint.

So that was the closest I had come to Sunderland and time travel actually. So I decided there and then that I was going to go to Sunderland and have a neb about. And what’s more I was going to find something I actually liked about it.

In the spirit of never put off until tomorrow, what you can just as easily put off until a week on Thursday, I proceeded to do nothing.

Then suddenly the kids went back to school and after a productive morning of screaming at my step ladder for not being my real ladder, I realised I was bored. Stuff it I thought I’m going to Sunderland.

I programmed the directions into my sat nav, which prompted the nice Irish girl whose voice it uses to break down in tears and refuse to co-operate.

After a brief argument I set off with a lot more on my mind than in it and headed towards the great unwashed masses.

.........PART 2 LATER THIS WEEK........

I went to Sunderland once, spilt a pot noodle. I'd like to think I improved the place.
