CC Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Scunthorpe v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
August 24 2011

Newcastle United travel to Glanford Park tomorrow evening in the 2nd round of the Carling Cup. Sky Sports have picked up the rights to cover the game and Kick Off is at 7.45pm. Alan Pardew had already ruled Joey Barton out of the game with a minor foot injury, but the midfielder has since been given permission to talk to Queens Park Rangers.

Hatem Ben Arfa remains the only other player absent through injury for Newcastle, whilst Sylvain Marveaux, Haris Vuckic and Sammy Ameobi could all participate with Marveaux making his competitive debut for the club.

Scunthorpe are without Paul Reid (groin), Jordan Robertson (broken ankle) and Cliff Byrne (back), whilst Niall Canavan could start, as could Oliver Norwood who will make his debut on his loan deal from Manchester United.

Scunthorpe have made a disappointing start to the season, whilst Newcastle have taken 4 points form two big games, including a win against Sunderland last weekend in the derby game.

Fact: Scunthorpe Utd have never knocked out a top flight team in the League Cup.

Fact: Newcastle won their last 2 away games in the League Cup scoring 7 goals in total, 4 of which were against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Think we'll see a few of the youngsters out for this one:

Harper
Perch Williamson Kadar Ferguson
Marveaux Guthrie Smith Vuckic Lovenkrands
Best

Bench:
Soderberg
Saylor
Raylor
Abeid
Obertan
Sammyobi
Ranger

1-0 win, Sammyobi last minute winner + mass pitch invasion.

Yeah, not a bad team pal. Would like to see a few young lads play especially Kadar as he needs the games. Could be a good run out for Gosling as well with Barton looking like he is going.

Completely forgot about Gosling actually, he'll start tomorrow I should think.

IF we want to make a run at this competition, I don't think Perch or Smith should be in the squad. Then again, AP thinks players like f00king Smith are going to put us over the top, so what do I know?

I'm also not keen on including Kadar. Most previews I've read have Williamson partnering with Saylor.

I think Tiote should play as he's looked off the pace. He didn't have a full preseason and this is a chance for him to build match fitness.

Tiote not even on the bench. Smith makes it though

Put out a pretty strong team, would expect a fairly comfortable win. Would have rested Colo, Simpson + Cabaye myself.

As for progression in the League Cup, we don't have the depth.

nothing is more infuriating than watching Best in front of the goal. Lovenkrands is a close second, his only savior being that he set Raylor's free kick. But Best...and Ba. F00Ks sake, where did we go wrong with attack?!

One shining spot in this all is that I am pleased with Sameobi and Vuckic. Krul is tremendous and I'm terrified we will lose him next season.

Vuckic and Sameobi play well together. Scunthorpe is trying to send it to penalties, with their best bet at scoring being if Simpson tries to do another one of his fancy flicks in front of the 18.

Good shout, senyab. Hopefully he's one who pans out and we actually hold onto. My worst fear about the Elliot/Loach approaches is that we're doing that in preparation for selling Krul, who will attract attention with his recent performances. You start for the Dutch, you get noticed.

Completely disagree senyab for a player who has been out as long as he has marveaux did very well he was the only one playing football the first half.

The 3 subs made the difference Saylor was his usual aggresive self getting the players around him going.
Vuckic just looks a classy player definitely should be getting some time against fulham.
Sameobi was perfectly described as a wanchope style player almost carrollesque be interesting to see how he does.

I agree Daragh

IMO first half we were poor especially the first 30 mins or so up until williamson went off for taylor.

Gosling give the ball away too much, ba was very poor, He also left his shooting boots at home, hopefully a bit more fitness will help. Is he the new Guthrie ?

lovenkrands offered nothing on the wing.

Best did decent imo held the ball up and won almost all his headers, also his goal was not offside.

Colo did much better once saylor came on. Williamson look well off the pace, maybe give Kadar a chance as back up ?

Raylor was good all match and his FK was superb,

simpson was poor and once we buy a LB Raylor should take over there.

Cabaye is going to be class, his vision and pssing sometimes is awesome.

Marveraux 2nd half playing central seemed decent the only thing is his height, give him time and I bet he will be good. 1st half attacked decently down the wing a few times.

Ba ... hmm well I was optomistic but well how to put this he seems a bit gash atm, prays that this will turn around.

Krul he has too be head and shoulders above now as our no 1 for the next few years at least. He will be in high demand next year.

Sameobi + Vuckic both looked very good when they came on added more pace and good touch. Vuckic looks more smooth, changes pace and dots about. Ameobi well did you see that finish ? He is good in the air and the ball sticks to his feet. A good outlet at times.

It wasn't pretty, I aint got no nails left, but we won in the end, fair do's to scunny they came and put on a very good show, however in the end we deserved it after 1 disallowed goal and a stone cold pen turned down wtf ref ?. Roll on the toon.

Everyone just needs to remember to wipe the first 20 mins from existance.

A win in a cup match away from home is hard regardless of the opponent. sunderland learned that lesson this week.

I also missed Sammy's goal, as another teacher called me literally a minute before it happened. I came back, and the replays had just ended.

Here's the youtube link though: [">www.youtube.com]

Saw Sammy's goal on highlights this morning...that's a finish, son! Really nice to see-PL defenders will close him down in that situation, as he had two Scunthorpe players within a yard of him during the run who were afraid to dive in. BUT, in a few seasons I've never seen Ranger, for example, finish like that. No hit & hope to it.

marveux did well in his first proper match for such a long time, his crossing was something we've missed from the left and he always seemed to be able to get the ball in to the box, we obviously didn't see his pace probably because of fitness but he looks like he could turn into a top player!

If Ba, Marveaux and whichever other players are fasting that's huge, especially considering this was a night game.

Too bad we have to wait so long to get a full look at them, and I'm not real big on the whole fasting excuse. If that's the case, we're likely going to have to deal with that for a month of every season. In any line of work you have to find a way not to let your beliefs inhibit your ability to do your job. To me, it's especially disappointing this season to get anything but the best from Tiote & Ba from the beginning as they will be off for 5 weeks later in the season.
