Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Sunderland v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
August 19 2011

Newcastle United travel to Sunderland tomorrow lunchtime in the day’s early kick off, with both teams playing on the back of opening season draws.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has just one player injured, Hatem Ben Arfa, who is carrying an ankle injury, whilst summer signing Sylvain Marveaux and youngster Shane Ferguson could both feature at some point having gained match fitness.

Steve Harper will start on the bench with Tim Krul in goal and Shola Ameobi set to start against the side which he has scored 6 goals against. Joey Barton is expected to start despite causing controversy against Arsenal last weekend as does Cheik Tiote who started as he means to go on and picked up his first yellow card during the first game.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce could be without John O’Shea who has a 50% chance of featuring, whilst Asamoah Gyan has recovered from a knock which he picked up against Liverpool last weekend.

Fact: Shola Ameobi has scored 6 goals in 10 league games against Sunderland.

Fact: Sunderland have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 22 games against Newcastle Utd in all competitions.

Fact: Sunderland have won just 1 of the last 13 Premier League games against Newcastle Utd.

Colo walked it off, Tunyc. But he limped a bit for a while. I think he just got spiked, nothing serious.

They spent a fortune, signing 10 I believe. We sold our top scorer, only left back (Ryan Taylor with two fantastic games in a row though), and still haven't spent the 35 million; yet, we still got 3 points at the SoS.

Absolute fantastic result. Each player played his part and I'm buzzing at the moment. Top of the table, for now, but I love it!

Am I the only one who would like to see raylor get a chance right back when/if we get a new left back?

Terrific result and the perfect start to the season. Two games where twinkle toe football would have lost us the game we done what was required.

Fantastic result, and what a brilliant start to the season. Arsenal and the Mackems out of the way and we have 4 points.

Well done Raylor and the rest of the lads

This has been a MUCH better start than i predicted from these 2 games to get 4 points from them is a massive bouns for us.

now we need to build on this with some transfer activty buzzing with the win but we lacked a huge goal threat up top shola played well but as we all know lacks that little bit of cut throat finishing fingers crossed

Fully agree, this is the time to get the players in as some of the foriegn players would be interested in coming here after the couple of results, plus it would give the fans and team a massive lift with the last couple of results.

Not getting too carried away with how we will do yet, but it is a great start and the next few games are important especially as there are qiute a few we can pick up some good points from
