Barton Denied US Visa

Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been denied a visa for the USA meaning he is unable to link up with his fellow team-mates for their pre-season tour. He will instead join the Reserves team in Holland for their pre-season training. The 28 year old has a history of on an off the pitch problems including convictions for assault and affray.

The first team fly out to the States and play Sporting Kansas on 20th July, Orlando City on 23rd and Columbus Crew on the 26th July 2011. Barton will now feature in games against FC Utrecht and Almere City from the 20th of July.

He told NUFC.co.uk

"Unfortunately, I was denied my visa due to my past.

I regret not being able to travel with the club on this trip, but at the same time, I don't expect to be treated any differently or more favorably than anyone else in a similar situation.

All I can do is continue to improve as a person, which is what I intend to do.

Again, apologies to all the NUFC supporters - as well as the fast growing legions of football supporters - in the United States who I was looking forward to meeting. I will see you in the future."
