Lille coach Rudi Garcia has confirmed that midfielder Yohan Cabaye is set to join Newcastle United in a deal worth €5million to the French club. 25 year old Cabaye had already disclosed his wish to move from Lillie and the fee will trigger the release clause in his contract which would otherwise tie him to the club until 2013.
Garcia told French channel Canal Plus;
“Yohan told us yesterday - first me, then the whole group before the game - that he has chosen to join Newcastle. It is a choice that I respect, although I wish he continued the adventure with us.”
Talking about his other players, one of which Newcastle have also been linked to, Gervinho, Garcia added;
“They are all under contract. The only one who can leave is Yohan Cabaye. All others are under contract and, if desired, will be in the squad next season.”
Cabaye has spent his entire career at Lille and made his senior international debut for the French team in August 2010.
I dont know much about this fella but he seems to have a decent goal scoring record and by looking at his card count it looks like hes not scared to put a tackle in.
What I've read says he's a holding CM primarily and if you look at that whole chart, the 13-goal season is what you call an outlier. So he's Tiote's backup and/or we're going with a 2-CDM formation (a la City or the German national team) at least some of the time. Sounds like he's got some quality, but the transition from the continent is always a big question mark. Also, an interesting buy considering the composition of the squad. Another indication of a 5-man formation being AP's preference.
I thought he was considered a box-to-box midfielder?
Consider we play a 5 man midfield; with Tiote, Cabaye and Nolan.
Tiote plays defensively, drops quite deep, Nolan stays quite high up the pitch, Cabaye links the two - supporting the attack in possession, dropping back when we lose it.
Guess we'll see how Pardew is planning to use him in our friendlies.
Also; I don't think he'd be signed as "Backup" - you don't leave a starting place in a Champions League side to sit on the bench.
The "box-to-box" description is not technical. I've seen Barton described the same way and it doesn't tell you anything about what he does in the squad/formation.
The French guy on the other thread says he plays in the middle of a 3-man midfield.
