Australia have 'stepped down' opening batsman David Warner after an alleged 'physical altercation' with England's Joe Root in the early hours of Sunday morning, following Australia's loss to England in their opening Champions Trophy match....

It is reported that the 'incident' happened in the centre of Birmingham, as the players let off steam, around 2am in the City's Walkabout bar.

Only a handful of players were left at this time, but Warner is 'alleged' to have struck Root before the England players, who also included Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad, went back to their hotel.

A ECB statement said "Following a full investigation, the England team management has concluded that the England player was in no way responsible for nor retaliated to the attack.

"Warner has admitted behaving inappropriately and has since apologised to the player involved who has accepted the apology."

"ECB has concluded that this is a matter for Cricket Australia and have no further comment to make."

Only last month, Warner fell foul of the Australian Cricket Board, when he had an online twitter spat with journalists, it led to him being fined nearly £4,000.

Cricket Australia says it will not make further comment on the allegations until after a hearing.

It surely puts Warner's place in doubt for the upcoming Ashes series, at a time when Australia are already missing captain Michael Clarke, who continues to struggle with his back problems.
