England captain Andrew Strauss has confirmed in the ECB press conference, that he has retired from all forms of cricket, with immediate effect.....

It is a dramatic end to for the England captain, following the 2-0 home series loss to South Africa, which saw the England cricket team, lose their number one status in the test rankings.

Strauss was at pains to point out during the emotional conference, that the recent Kevin Pietersen text row, had nothing to do with his decision to step down as England captain, and that he had spoken with coach Andy Flower a couple of weeks ago, prior to the row kicking up, about quitting the game.

Strauss said that he had written letters to the England players the day before the announcement, outling his plans to retire.

He was England's 2nd most succesful captain, and will be best remembered for winning the Ashes down under in the 2010/11 series, which sparked wild celebrations in Sydney, amongst 30,000 England supporters.

Asked why he was retiring now, Strauss stated "For me, the driver to it all was frankly my form with bat. I haven't batted well enough for a long period of time now."

For a captain to perform his role properly it's important not to be a passenger and it's important that people aren't speculating whether you should be in the side "I wasn't going to iprove batting-wise."

"I've run my race. It's a gradual feeling that's grown over the last six months. "If I'm honest, I'd very much like to go out on my own terms with my head held high."
