Well slump again against Rangers

Lasley v Wylde

For the fourth League game this season Motherwell were once again hammered by Rangers.

Motherwell played well enough in the first half and gave as good as they got but a couple of key refereeing decisions didn’t help their cause.

The first came in the 13th minute when Lasley was fouled at the edge of the box, it looked as though the tackle had happened on the line or just inside but the ref took the decision to award the free just outside the box.

Then in the 18th minute, David Weir was all over John Sutton, two hands in his back followed by a pull on his jersey. Play was waved on and 24 seconds later Rangers had opened the scoring!

A strong run from Davis released Lafferty who kept his composure to round Randolph and roll the ball in despite the best efforts of Steven Hammell.

We responded well and forced McGregor to saves from Steve Jones, and then the keeper reacted well to stop Jeffers from laying Sutton in with a tap in.

Just before the break Lafferty was lucky not to see a second yellow, a free kick was awarded but the striker kept going and slammed the ball into the net, but the ref chose to ignore this incident!

The second was a completely different affair with Rangers all over Motherwell and scoring at will. They got the crucial second goal only five minutes after the re-start, Randolph blocked a shot from Naismith but the ball fell for Davis to rill the ball into the net from 10 yards out.

The third came from a Jelavic header at the far post, the fourth a long range effort from Naismith. Things could have been much worse but Jelavic hit the bar with another header and Naismith missed the target from close range.

The final goal came in stoppage time and it was a spectacular finish from a tight angle from Naismith.

Stuart McCall called the last 30 minutes “embarrassing”, and I don’t think many Motherwell fans will disagree with that!
