Things seem to have gone quiet on who our new manager is going to be after much speculation at the weekend. Will we have someone in place for the game on Boxing Day?
A couple of names seem to have come to the surface as favourites, and they don’t appear to include any of the usual suspects that surface when any Scottish vacancy is made available.
The Sun has former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs as one of the favourites for the job after a strong recommendation from his Manager David Moyes. Stubbs is currently a reserve team coach at Everton.
This would be a risky appointment given Stubbs has no first team experience, but a strong assistant may help him overcome this lack of experience. He could also keep the links between Motherwell and Everton open after successful loans of John Ruddy and Lukas Jutkiewicz.
Another strong favourite is Ricky Sbragia, the Scot who has been Manager at Sunderland and an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Man Utd. He is currently a scout at the Stadium of Light, and in that role spent a good bit of the early season at Fir Park taking in our European games.
This could be seen as a safer pair of hands given his previous experience, but I would actually think if there was any “chemistry” between the two that this could be a good partnership to put in place as manager and assistant.
Others being linked this week have been Stuart McCall (allegedly with John Brown as his assistant – enough to see you hand your season ticket back!!), John Sutton and Jimmy Calderwood.
The club deserve great credit for keeping things under wraps and doing their business in private, but it would also be good to hear some news…
