Yesterday saw a long trip to the Palace for Blackpool supporters, although nearly 1000 travelled. Unfortunatley we didn't get to meet the queen at Palace. Instead we were treated to a game of two halves and possibley the funniest ejection from a football ground all season.
We'll get the fun and games over with first. During the afternoon a selection of 'pool fans dressed as old woman tried to make a dash over a section of the stand which had been cordoned off. This led to some of the Palace stewards chasing them around trying to capture and eject them. The 'pool fans eventually were caught and booted. Although half the travelling fans where rolling around in stitches by then.
Grayson resisted the urge to throw Paul Dickov back into the mix, instead he give him about ten minutes at the end. Although had he been on first half, he may have had a hat-trick. The team sheet was the same as 'pools previous outing. However the bench was slightly different with three strikers on the bench.
The first ten minutes where well and truely Crystal Palace's. They started well and forced Blackpool to defend. Which they did well, closing down Palace as much as possible.
Palace fans where screaming for the ref to come into action after about 15 minutes. Evatt barged one of there lot and he did about three front rolls before playing dead. This caused Warnock to get irate but the referee just waved play on. Brilliant!
GTF will feel gutted that he never scored. His shot bounced off the 'keeper before Burgess got the ball, tricked the defender and proceeded to sit on his arse. The ball was cleared and maybe had Dickov been on we would have been 1-0 up.
A belting long ranger from a free kick caused problems in the Palace box before the Seasiders won a corner. Which also caused problems before one of our lot hit it although it was saved.
We may have scored any other day when Ian Evatt managed to get in the box. Wesley bashed in a corner but it was fired over the bar by Evatt.
Frustration was soon kicking in, not only were we not scoring but I couldn't go for a fag either. But I was comforted when a freind said he reackoned a goal was "on it's way" and how he's "always right about things like this". Silly sausage got me convinced we were on for a win. Well we were dominating the game at this point.
Although Palace may feel a penalty should have been given. Our defender tackled there forward and he went down. However the ref booked him for diving. For once I have to say I actually liked a referee. Although Palace will think he's a tosser! Although after the tackle there was a mass confrontation. But nothing serious, no head butts or punches but yellow cards where handed to both Evatt and one of there lot.
Before half time we had the chance to score again, Jorgenson volleyed the ball just over. The half ended 0-0 and we went to try the catering at Selhurst Park, which is as much as a dump now as it was when I went there back in the day.
Half Time:
Palace 0 Blackpool 0
I decided that a nice cup of coffee was required at half time. Eight or nine cans in the car down there and then a few pints in the Prince of Wales, left me feeling a bit head sore. But as the sores got worse so did the game. Well for us Seasiders anyway.
Palace must of got the telling off of a life-time. They come out like a house on fire. A virgin on viagra or Will Young after winning Pop Idol. The battled well and dominated the opening ten minutes and maybe should have scored.
There man should of been sent off after he fouled McPhee. Who had managed to break free of the the rest of the pac. However the referee who had been on our team upon till now, just gave a yellow card. Then there 'keeper nearly put as ahead when he dropped a clanger. He fluffed up a cross and the ball may have crossed the line on another day but he was wise to his mistake and rectified thereafter.
Last ten minutes where all our's, Burgess was replaced by Dickov turning the 'pool crowd into a choir. Singing away we where cheering on our team hoping we could nick it after a second half battering from them.
Wes Hoolahan should have won us the game when he turned on his man and tried to chip the 'keeper. Any other day it would have gone in however it didn't.
The game ended a draw which was probably fair in the end although we have good cause to feel that we should have won. However Palace will be full of what if's and if we had, had another tosspot referee they would have got there penalty and probably would have won.
Attention now get's turned to West Bromwich Albion at home. However there is over a week's rest in between but hopefully we will get that much wanted win and get within three points of a realistic survival target of 56 points.
