Back to the CC1 Banton-less in the Midlands

No Tom Banton is the main surprise in the middle phase red ball side to face Notts at trent Bridge this weekend. He is being rested for the Blast it seems - not many fans are impressed by that seeing as he has played all the Vitality Blast games and kept when one of the Rews was usually available - I'm sure there is method in the madness. Jordan Hermann reverts back to his red ball role and Alfie Ogborne is in along with Migael Pretorius. We also welcome back the spin hermits Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan. James Rew is named in the side despite having to report for the Second Test for England very close to the end of this game. Notts have won the toss and will bowl.
CC1 v Nottinghamshire @ Trent Bridge Friday 12 June 2026
We return to the middle phase of the Championship after a poor end to the first section of the Vitality Blast with four consecutive losses. We've lost a number of bats to injury and add Tom Banton to that as we seem to be resting him after a broken finger in the IPL to keep him for the rest of the Blast games. Despite the fact that he has batted and kept in all the first stage of the T20 games... with an injured finger? Who knows.
Therefore he will not be playing a red ball game for us until the late August/September phase at best. Fans are not over the moon about this and question the club's overall priorities not surprisingly.
The covers is being removed at 10:45, Notts have won the toss and will field first - no suprise in these grey, cold and overcast conditions. James Rew is in the side though one would imagine he has to report to the Test at some point so we will watch this space and wait to see who takes the gloves.
The Somerset side is;
Thomas, Vaughan, Hermann, Rew J, Rew T, Goldsworthy, Gregory, Overton, Pretorius, Ogborne, Leach
At 11 am, the umpires lead the players out. They cross over the rope, look up at the sky and send the players back in as the hover cover comes back on and we wait for the start of the game.
It isn't a long delay and at 11:05 the teams return with Jordan Hermann and Josh Thomas opening againsty O'Neill from the Radcliffe Road end with the floodlights already on. Josh takes the first over. I counted the crowd in the 2 thirds of the ground in front of me and got to 48. It looks to have probably doubled since then. It isn't a 'sit in the sun' kind of June and that is confirmed by the return to the dressing room at 11:11 after 5 balls.
11:16 and we are back on to finish the first over. Hutton takes the second at 1 for 0. With 7 on the board in O'Neil's second Thomas gets a significant edge going after a ball he really had to stretch to get at but which straightened on him and went to Haynes. W'e are 7 for 1 (including 4 extras) with the young opener leaving without adding to the score.
The next surprise is that Lewis Goldsworthy is in at number 3 replacing James Rew in the battging order rather than Tom Abell at 4. This will be interesting as he has had very little batting in the last few weeks with the 'polar' nature of our T20 batting where either we scored loads without needing the middle order or the middle order collapsed without bothering the scorers all that much. Anyway he gets off the mark with a lovely cover drive from O'Neill in the 5th and we move to 13 for 1.
Lewis has reached when he gets an edge to Hutton in the 8th which also finds the hands of Haynes at third slip and we are 20 for 2 with James Rew coming in at 4 and he is off the mark first ball with a single.
We see the first change with the 12th as Dillon Pennington comes on from the pavilion end at 32 for 2. Both Somerset bats are yet to pass 10 (Hermann on 9 and Rew on 8) so no one has yet got into double figures on a wicket that certainly has something for the team winning the toss this morning. Jordan is the first to pass that milestone with a glanced four down to the Radcliffe Road stand at the end of the over. In the 14th he suddely opens his shoulders and puts Pennington into the stand for six out of nowhere.
The next change comes at the Radcliffe Road end as Notts CC1 debutant Mohammed Ali takes the ball for the first time with the 15th at 45 for 2. Before we reach 50, off the bowling of Pennington Jordan absolutely connects one which tyhe bowler gets the slightest touch on and which destroys the middle stump. That means he runs out Rew at the non strikers end at 47 for 3 with a score of 10 from 30. A most unfortunate way to get out and his partner is full of apologies for it as he hit the ball so hard and so straight tat our wicket keeper had nearly no time to react. He's replaced by his brother Thomas
The Somerset 50 arrives in the 20th over with a Rew single while his partner has 23 from 49 balls. Brett Hutton returns to the attck for the 22nd at 54 for 3. At lunch we have reached 63 for 3 with Thomas on 10 from 34 and Hermann on 25 from 54. A nervous and scratchy first session with one unfortunate run out and two injudicious edges. Thomas is either a great leaver or just is not sure where the top of his off stump is and has been lucky and we have stumbled to lunch on Day 1. Jordan Hermann does look like an organised opener which prompts the question - if we knew he was available, why did we wait until about 5 games in before signing him?
With 71 overs left in the day, Hutton bowls the first of the afternoon (the 26th) from the pavilion end to Jordan Hermann at 63 for 3 in the first real sunshine of the day. The clouds have gone to whiter fluffier ones and there is even some blue sky appearing. His initial opening partner O'Neill returns to the fight from the Radcliffe Road
The 50 partnership arrives around the same time as we pass 100 with Thomas catching up with Jordan in the late 30s. At 103 for 3 he passes him with 38 from 77 as opposed to is 37 from 83. Pennington and James are looking to keep both men honest and the scoring rate has rarely passed 3 an over but the Somerset pair have stuck to their task.
Pennington changes ends for the 41st over and Jordan goes to 51 smashing hm over extra cover to get there in 98 balls with 5 fours and a six at 122 for 3. Hermann has had fun with Pennington all day from both ends of the ground. Ali also changes ends in the 42nd to come in from the pavilion (Stuart Broad end). The bowling attack keeps on asking questions but presently the Somerset pair seem prepared to provide answers.
Thomas Rew hits his first ever Championship 50 at 129 for 3. It came from 94 balls with 8 fours and it also came off Pennington.
The sun has come out now and it feels a little more like June as we move into the afternoon. The run rate has not really improved but the two bats seem to be moving with more freedom as theymove into the 140s against O'Neill and Ali. They seem to be willing to take a few more chances and we see Hermann guiding a wayward O'Neill ball down to the legside boundary and Thomas Rew hooking Ali for four to the Radcliffe Road end. They move to a 100 partnership from 112 balls at 147 for 3 and they have reset this innings.
The 150 arrives soon after in the 51st over with Hermann on 60 from 127 and Rew on 57 from 113. It's all looking a little flatter and the minefield seems to have calmed down. To deal with that Notts turn to the spin of Liam Patterson-White for the first time today. with the 52nd over at 152 for 3. He tries to tie Thomas down and he hits him to the boundary over the infield so this could be interesting if it lasts a while. He will be bowling with Brett Hutton who comes on at the Ratcliffe Road for the 53rd.
As we move towards Tea, the pitch seems to have flattened out under the sun of the afternoon and the score has moved on to 162 for 3 as the last over before Tea is given to Freddie McCann's spin from the Radcliffe Road end to see if it might change something. Thomas has a go at his last and edges it to the boundary to finish the session without the loss of a wicket at 167 for 3 with Rew Junior on 66 from 132 and Hermann on 64 from 148. 57 overs down and another 39 to come in the day.
The third session of Day 1 starts with Patterson-White spin. Then Ali comes back to the Radcliffe Road and he gets the breakthrough with his first Notts CC1 wicket as he gets Rew LBW for 68 off 133 with 11 fours. His highest red ball career score. In comes Archie Vaughan at 169 for 4 and both bowlers look to hold him in check for the initial overs. He finally gets off the mark to his 20th ball while the sacore has moved to 188 for 4
As we move towards the new ball at 80 overs, Jordan moves towards 3 figures. He needs 4 rns and the new ball is available in 2 overs. Notts have gone back to Patterson-white spin at the pavilion (presently being renovated and grafted with a new bigger wider body) and Lyndon James steaming in from the other end. Hermann slams his second ball straight to the boundary for a 203 ball ton with 10 fours and 1 six - a very organised, solid and impressive debut Somerset CC1 hundred when his side needed it. 218 for 4 is followed at 222 for 4 by the 50 run partnership between these two to which Archie has contributed 15 from 72 balls. We are going to miss the longeivity of Hermann when he leaves after the Warwickshire match.
O'Neill takes the new ball in the 80th with 16 overs left in the day. He'll share it with Brett Hutton. Jordan is finally defeated by one at 234 for 5 bowled by the deserving O'Neill for 106 from 211 balls. In comes Craig Overton with 12 and a half overs of the day left to face and Archie on 26.
The people in the Press box beklieve that Archie was dropped by the keeper down the legside off the first ball of the 85th over. A difficult chance but probably should have been taken Vaughan was on 26. However, at the end of the over Craig leaves him LBW and another wicket for O'Neill with no score to his name. In comes the skipper at 238 for 6 with 11 overs left in the day.
The new pair bring up the 250 in the 87th gaining the first batting bonus point and coming courtesy of a four that got Lewis Gregory off the mark. Hutton has steamed in all day and his figures of 1 for 39 with 4 maidens from his 19 do him credit. He is still going past the bat this late in the day and is having a bit of a fight with the Somerset captain with quite a lot of give and take in their interaction. Meanwhile Archie has moved into the 40s and with 6 overs to go he will be aware of the position as Ali comes back on to bowl having also provided good service today with his 15 overs 4 maidens 1 for 27 in his first game for the East Midlanders.
Dillon Pennington returns for the last 5 so he will bowl 3 from the Broad end. He gets Lewis with one with considerable wheels on it which just did not get up at all and castles the bat for 10 from 22 balls at 267 for 7 and in comes Jack to try and help Archie find the 2 runs he needs for his 50 and get us through the 4 and a bit overs to the end of the day. Unfortunately Dillon is now fired up (16 overs 4 maidens 37 for 1).
An innings from Jack is rarely dull and against Ali he strokes him for a well fielded 2 before snicking him throught the cordon for four and then stealing the strike with a cheeky single. He then takes four from Pennington with a drive through the covers at the start of the next before he clips him square for another. When Archie gets on strike he does get to 50 from 117 balls with 5 fours at 285 for 7
Day 1 ends at 295 for 7 with Jack walking back in at a run a ball 21 with his younger partner on 51 from 121.
Day 2
O'Neill takes the first and the 300 arrives a the end of the first. Ali takes the second from the Stuart Broad end as Archie and Jack look to move forward in the scattered cloud of a Notts Saturday morning with heavy grey clouds to the left of the ground and much nicer stuff to the right. There's also considerably more wind this morning with a wind tunnel down the "Larwood and Voce" back road heading in this morning.
The fun does't last all that long as 27 balls into his innings without adding to his overnight score, Leach smacks one from O'Neill out to the rope and is caught by James on the square leg boundary for 21. In comes Migael after quite a layoff, having not played any white ball games at all. He's not had much fun with the ball in the seconds either but you are never left wondering when he has a bat in his hand. It's 'gone or out' usually. Meanwhile Vaughan is playing the 'bat in charge' role and has moved on to 64
Miggy is not there long as her misses a straightish one from O'Neill that moves in after he doesn't hit it and takes out his leg stump for 0. 310 for 9 as Alfie comes out as the last man. He is LBW to Fergus O'Neill ball 2 and that's your lot at 310. O'Neill takes 6 for 72 and deserved the last couple this morning for his work yesterday when he celebrated more than once a close call that was not out. Archie is not out 66 from 145 and we take the 2 Batting bonus points.
Hameed and Slater come out to face Lewis Gregory first and Hammed doesn't seem all that clever as he wafts a poor shot at the skipper's 4th ball and is on his way back thanks to the hands of Archie at 3rd slip in the first over. It's 0 for 1 and Freddie McCann is in the middle much earlier than he expected to be one thinks.
Ogborne takes the second from the Broad end and nearly does for McCann with his first ball. He's off the mark with a single and later in the over adds an edged drive to the corner of the Radcliffe Road end.
Gregory strikes again as he has Slater plumb in front for 1 from 6 and Notts are 9 for 2 in the 5th over as Joe Clarke arrives in the middle. The mornings on this wicket are going to be unpredictable as Clarke gets a couple of stinkers in his first over from the Somerset captain.
After 9 overs we see Pretorius from the Stuart Broad end and then Overton starts from the Radcliffe with the 13th at 35 for 2. In the 17th Craig questions the shape of the ball and we have a conference. The end result seems to be 'get on with it' and 'on' we do go. McCann nearly holes out as he gets a shot completely wrong but lucky for him it goes high but falls short of the diving Pretorius. At the end of the over Gregory has another quite long discussion with the umpire - not sure what about - it may become obvious later.
As we move towards lunch, Pretorius continues with a very frugal spell of 5 overs for 12 and his 5th is the final one before lunch as Notts bring up 50 for 2 after 18 overs in the morning with 69 left in the day. McCann has 19 from 51 and Clarke has 26 from 47.
After the break Craig opens the attack and his partner for the first time in the game is surprisingly Jack Leach who was not tried before the break but we must think there is something there though his season has not been all that promising up to this point, partly, many think, because of some kind of neck injury. Patterson-White did not seem to have got much out of it ion this season and Jack only has 5 wickets this season at the moment. The ploy works with the 25th over when at 69 for 2 McCann comes forward to the arm ball and is caught behind to be Leach's 6th CC1 wicket. McCann was not convinced but he is still out. Haynes replaces him in the middle and they work at the new partnership as Gregory comes on in the 29th to replace Overton and he has Clarke edging short in the middle of his first of the afternoon. With the next ball, Clarke chops on and goes for 36 from 79 at 81 for 4. This brings James to the crease to face Leach for the first time. He is in front as far Umpire Saggers is concerned in the next over and he goes LBW without scoring at 82 for 5.
Next, it is spinner facing spinner as the next man in is Liam Patterson-White and the new pair settle and push the score on past 100 in the via a Patterson-White chop for 2 in the 32nd off Leach. By the 41st they have moved the score on to 122 off the bowling of Pretorius before they once again face the Somerset spinner as we move towards Tea. However in the 42nd with 13 overs before the break he gets the Notts spinner to cut and he gets a bottom edge and he is bowled for 29 off 43 at 122 for 6. Jack has 3 for 35 from his 12 as Fergus O'Neill comes out to the crease.
The new two push on and take the score past 150 off the returning Overton in the 50th. With a final over from Archie Vaughan the Notts pair take the game to Tea at the 55th after 120 runs and 4 wickets in the session. 171 for 6 with Haynes on 42 from 77 and O'Neill on 21 from 44. There will be 32 overs after the 20 minute break.
The last session of the day is started by Gregory and the first event is Haynes/O'Neill going to a 50 partnership with an off side cut from Haynes for four off the first ball. Haynes himself goes to 50 in the same over with 4 fours in his 80 ball half ton at 178 for 6. The over has more events as O'Neill is caught behind after nibbling at 1. An eventful over and the fourth wicket (4 for 43) for Lewis.
Hutton comes out with Notts in a bit of a hole at 178 for 7. He does not stay long as he tries to smash Pretorius in the 59th at 187 for 7. He top edges it and it goes skyward and then down into the hands of Hermann at midwicket. He goes for 6 from 14 and it is not getting better for the home side.
However the next problem is for Somerset as Gregory pulls up in his next over (the 60th) and after some consultation he leaves the pitch with what seems to be a pulled hamstring. Ball subs for him and COve finishes the over. Another injury? For heaven's sake. It's a BIG problem as Kain Roberts was injured this morning in the warm-up se we are going to need a like for like and the only one I can think of is Zak Vukusic who may be on his way to Trent Bridge if this is an issue.
Pennington is Haynes new batting partner as Overton comes on for his skipper and is now acting captain with Gregory's absence. At 190 for 8, Pennington is caught in front after missing with a loose drive and is gone for nothing. Mohamed Ali is the last man as Somerset take a third bowling point.
Ali is off the mark with an edged two and they survive until the next Overton over when Haynes looks to push the score on but he gets it wrong, gets a top edge to James Rew and goes for 57 from 102 at 193 all out. 117 runs ahead with 21 overs (after deleting the 2 for change of innings) left in the day.
About 10 minutes later Hermann and Thomas are out to start the second half of the game against O'Neill to begin with and then Hutton. After 6 they have moved to 20 without loss. With 10 left they have moved to 37 for 0 19 to Hermann and 13 from Thomas. Ali is on to bowl before the end of the day. With 6 to go Notts bring in Patterson-White and he tempts Josh to cut, he gets a feather and walks caught behind for 23 from 41 at 72 for 1 with 5.1 overs to go in the day.
Out comes Alfie Ogborne as the Nightwatch option rather than the more expansive Jack Leach. But the game is not yet over as in Ali's 19th over he gets Hermann on 40 looking to hook. The umpire thinks he got a top edge but the bat is shaking his head but no one is sure whether he is disappointed at the choice of shot or doesn't think he hit it. Whichever way it is 72 for 2 and Lewis Goldsworthy is walking out to face less than 3 overs.
No more worries as Somerset finish Day on 73 for 2 with Lewis Goldsworthy on 1 from 3 and Alfie Ogborne on 0 from 17 with an overnight score of 73 for 2 and a lead of 190 runs with 8 wickets in hand and 2 days to go.
Day 3
Ball 1 from Hutton sees Lewis Goldsworthy snick the ball to Clarke for 1 and Somerset are 73 for 3. There is speculation about the other Lewis' continued involvement in this game after going off not finishing an over last night. No official info has been forthcoming this morning though Jake Ball is present in the squad and Zach Vukusic has been called up from Somerset as possible sub cover. Meanwhile James Rew has joined Alfie Ogborne in the middle.
By the 32nd over the new pair have moved the score on to 87 for 3 as Dillon Pennington starts his third day bowling work. The bowlers are working hard and scoring is very difficult and at 93 for 3 Freddie McCann drops Alfie - a pretty regulation 'catch' going down off Pennington just after Ali delivered one of the deliveries that simply did not get 'up' to Rew at the other end. It's a difficult pitch for the third morning running at the moment James finding it particularly hard with only 6 from the 53 balls he has seen today and Alfie making lighter work of it with a massive 15 from the 71 he's seen in this innings with some of them coming last night. All the Notts bowlers are working hard to get the breakthroughs that the surface is presently offering before it gives up and flattens out again in the early afternoon.
The semi-official news from Somerset is that they expect Lewis Gregory to bat in this innings - we'll believe it when we see it. Zach Vukusic has not been called up Ollie Coleman and Josh Shaw have arrived instead.
The 100 finally arrives in the 40th over along with a possible non striker run out as James Rew straight drives the ball which Pennington almost catches and drops onto the stumps instead. Nothing comes of it.
Finally Notts get some joy as Ali bowls Ogborne for a very stubborn 17 from 76 balls at 106 for 4. Out comes Thomas Rew to join his brother and he is off the mark with a single. Before the lunch break the usual over from spinners occurs as Liam Patterson-White comes on from the Broad end. The Rew boys have broken the shackles a little in the last 15 mins and moved the score on into the 140s with James leading the way on 30 while the younger has 16. The spin attack doubles as McCann is introduced at the Radcliffe Road in partnership. They take the game to the lunch interval with Somerset on 148 for 4 with James on 33 from 85 and Thomas 19 from 29 after 50 overs with 67 left in the day
James starts the afternoon in partnership with Patterson-White from the Stuart Broad end and we move past 150 in the first over taking the overall lead to 267. At the end of the 56 over, James moves to a 104 ball 50 at 174 for 4. He goes to a Clarke catch off James 2 balls later for that 50 (conversion rate has changed then). Out comes Archie Vaughan at 174 and the whole 'how many do we need to justify a declaration?', 'will Lewis bat or do we call in a sub who can bat and bowl to have a full bowling complement?' etc etc. If Lewis bats in the hope of pushing the score along we can't then possibly ask for a bowling sub can we. That would be ridiculous.
There is another milestone here as the last partnership was the first in the Championship between the Rew brothers. Hopefully the first of many. However, the pace of the scoring rate presently suggests they may not have made it in a winning CC1 side as we are still under 300 ahead (presently at 177 for 5 at the end of the 62nd some 294 ahead) with the prospect of only having just over three sessions to bowl the home side out with an attack a bowler down possibly - because even if Gregory bats he most definitely will not bowl in the Notts second innings under any circumstances.
The 200 arrives in the 69th from Ali with Thomas on 49 and Archie on 5. The 50 arrives from 75 balls at 207 for 5. Two half tons in the same game? Not too bad Thomas!! At 226 for 5 the partnership passes 50 with Vaughan on 21 and Thomas Rew on 59. The lead passes 350 with a six into the stand by Rew at the corner of the Voce and Larwood stand. It also takes him to a new CC1 highest score beating his 68 from the first innings.
Archie goes at 243 bowled by Patterson-White for 23 from 87. In comes Craig Overton with about 5 overs to the Tea interval. Fergus O'Neill comes back as they take the new ball. The Somerset 250 also arrives. Brett Hutton also re-appears at the Stuart Broad end. At 253 Overton is dropped by James out in the deep on 8. The poor fielding has deepend the problems Notts have had when coupled with the lack of luck they have also experienced. This game is NOT going well for them.
Tea arrives with 32 overs to go after 85. 272 for 6 with Overton on 16 from 22 and Rew on 79 from 110. The lead is 389. The announcement also comes through at Tea that Jake Ball is replacing Lewis Gregory with immediate effect. At 288 Craig is LBW to O'Neill for 20. Thomas is 9 short of a ccentury and they send in Jack to try and help him there before the pretty imminent declaration. Probably before Pretorius because he is more likely to stay there for a few deliveries.
A scrabbled single from Leach brings up the 300 in the 92nd over with Thomas on 99 then on strike facing Hutton and he gets it off the last ball of the over from 135 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes. Remember this it will hoefully be the first of very very many. 301 for 7 a lead of 418 runs. Jack then hits out as the declaration is not immmediate. Pennington is on fromthe Radcliffe Road and they must be looking at a hope of 450 lead perhaps? There is still Miggy P to come if they want to have a blast. There are 24 overs left after the 93rd as well so at 433 we go on. Mohammad Ali returns at the Broad end and Thomas sixes him into the Voce.
They move on to 332 and a lead of 449 then Thomas again sixes Ali into the stand to move the lead to 455 followed by another. The 50 partnership arrives from 27 balls at 347 and on we go. We pass 350 in the 97th over with Jack on 24 and Thomas on 126. They keep going for it as Leach reaches the boundary once again and it ends at 355 for 7 with a lead of 472. Thomas Rew is not out 127 from 151 with 6 sixes and 8 fours. Jack finishes on 28 not out and there are 18 overs left in the day for Notts to bat through.
Notts are out again with Ogborne starting from the Stuart Broad end to Hameed who gets off the mark with a single and beats the King Pair. Slater defends the next 5 and its 1 for 0 with 17 to go. Pretorius takes the second and he bowls a maiden and we then notice that Thomas is keeping for the first time in a CC1 game. This will be because it gives him a look at the attack as he will be keeping in the Warwickshire game next week as he will be the only keeper we will have as James will be with England and Tom Banton is injured.
Slater gets off the mark and the pair settle in to see out the rest of this evenings overs - they hope. Somersdet would like to see the back of one of them. probably Hameed as he has yet to give us any trouble in a number of games and this is NOT the one we want him to start with if that is going to change.
Jake Ball replaces Alfie at the Broad end for the 7th with 11 after that. He sends Slater back to the hutch at 23 for 1 as he is caught by Hermann at first slip. He produces a wicket maiden for his first.
Craig is introduced in the 12th over and he gets McCann with his 4th ball caught behind for 8 from 18 at 36 for 2. This brings Brett Hutton out to finish the day he started by batting out 6.2 overs with luck - something he didn't have all that much of at the beginning of Day 3.
With 5 to go Hameed has moved to 11 and Hutton is on 2. Overton is steaming in from the Radcliffe and we have a bit of Jack from the Broad.
2 overs to go see Notts close to 50 at 47 for 2. They stay there fore the whole of Jack's last of the day and he finishes with 2 overs 1 maiden 1 for 1 as he sends Hutton in an over early at 47 for 3 with 6 from 18 balls out LBW. Joe Clarke comes in - had Hutton gone 1 ball later that would have been it but - he has 6 balls to defend. Craig does the last and we would like to see the back of Hameed to make the day complete. Too much to hope for really. He is solid defence and the day ends with Notts staying on 47 for 3 - 426 behind with 7 wickets left. A really good day for the visitors and expecially for the Family Rew!! As an aside found out later, Thomas Rew scored his debut CC1 century 6772 days after his birth while his brother's first century (at Chelmsford in July 2022) came 6773 days after his!! It was destined to be!!
Day 4
We come to the last day of an interesting CC1 game 2 results are possible as it is highly unlikely that Notts will chase down the 426 they need to win in the 92 or so overs they have left to them. So it is either a Somerset win if they can take the 7 wickets outstanding or a draw if we can't. It is all down to our prowess in the field today. Hameed (12) and Clarke (0) face Jake Ball first from the Stuart Broad as we start in greyish but bright and dry conditions and the 50 comes up courtesy of a legside glance for 4 in the first over from Clarke.
Jake soon breaks the overnight pair however when he bowls Joe Clarke for 4 at 51 for 4 in the 21st over of the innings. Out comes Haynes to face Overton from the Radcliffe Road end and it's COve who makes the second breakthrough when he has the dangerous Hameed caught behind in the 26th over for 25 at 69 for 5. This brings James to the crease to deal with a very confident Somerset attack at the moment still needing over 400 runs to avoid defeat. Presently Ball has 2 for 20 and Overton has 2 for 15 both from 8 overs.
Thomas gets his second catch of the day when he dives across first slip to take a very good one handed one to send Lyndon James back to the dressing room without scoring at 75 for 6 off the bowling of Overton. Though you culd asy it is all looking good for the visitors... we have been here before quite recently and it didn't end all that well. Patterson-White arrives in the middle to try and spoil our day.
Alfie is the first change of that day as he comes on from the Broad end for the 28th replacing Ball after a very good opening spell. Craig continues for the time being from the Radcliffe and the score moves on to 79 for 6 after 30 overs. On comes Pretorius at the Radclliffe for the 32nd. In the 33rd Ogborne keeps falling over and it all looks a little strange, something isn't right with his delivery at the moment - we all hope it's not INJURY based!!
Meanwhile it may not be a problem as Migael sends Patterson-White back for 4 caught in the slips by Overton at 87 for 7 and as he goes off so does Alfie with the physio as he passes O'Neill coming on. With the end of Pretorius' 34th we, not suprisingly, see Jake Ball back at the other end (they have also brought on the helmets and there is a close fielder padded up so there will be spin before lunchtime one would imagine).
Haynes is still putting loose stuff to the boundary and a cover driven four from him brings the home side close to 3 figures. The good news is that Alfie returns to the middle at the start of the 38th over. We'll have to see if he bowls again to completely allay fears of course. The 3 figures finally arrives in that 38th over - quite a while after they got within four of the total. O'Neill moves to 9 from 15 and Haynes has 24 from 48. The run total is pretty imaterial to be honest. They presently need 371 from a maximum number of overs of 76. as the run rate has rarely breached 3 by anything significant throughout the whole game and the RRR to win is just below 5 we've sort of put the concept of a 'run chase' on Day 4 to bed.
As predicted, spin is introduced in the 39th over from the Stuart Broad end as Jack Leach takes his first over of the day. A straight drive from Haynes off Pretorius nearly does for O'Neill as it breaks the stumps at the non striker's end. We all breath a sigh of relief only for Miggy to get him next ball caught behind by Rew for 24 at 108 for 8 and out comes Pennington.
We go to 'twin spin' as Vaughan takes over from Pretorius for the 43rd. They add 3 to move to 124 for 8 after his first of the innings. As the spinners continue, the umpires allow an extra 15 minutes as the 8th wicket is down.
No more wickets in the morning and we go to a later lunch at 138 for 8 in the 53rd over Notts are 335 runs behind with Fergus O'Neill on 39 and Dillon Pennington on 7. The Somerset predictor says this is 100% a Somerset win. There's a suggestion they may yet be being 'over-optimistic' though we do have 61 overs left in the day to see if they are right. Presently it is also worth mentioning that Thomas Rew has four catches in this second innings with 1 last night and 3 this morning.
Craig starts what we all hope is the last session of the game with the first over from the Radcliffe to Pennington in sunshine, his third ball goes right through everyone to the Broad end boundary - one of those that simply did not get up. Fooled the bat, the keeper and the slip cordon, none of who moved. By the end of the over, the pair have moved to 147 for 8. The first of the afternoon from the Broad end is taken by Jake Ball who is initially bowling to O'Neill
The 150 does finally arrive via a cover driven four from O'Neill n the 57th over. and at 152 for 8 Notts are only 321 runs behind. Against Overton Pennington becomes a little nonchalant and he drives one off the ground - straight into the waiting hands of Lewis Goldsworthy and he leaves for 15 at that score of 152 for 9. In comes Muhammad All still requiring to put together a partnership that adds 321 to the score to save this game. He is rushed by his first delivery and almost pops the ball to the close fielder (Thomas) on his leg side. The rest of the 58th he survives, getting off strike at the end of it. This of course means he steals the strike and will therefore face the next from Ball. He gets away from there as well and O'Neill takes over four runs from his 50
Fergus goes to 50 in the 61st over from 95 balls at 164 for 9.
The final wicket arrives at 166 with Mohammed Ali caught by Ogborne off the bowling of Overton for 1 with O'Neill unbeaten on 54. Somerset take the game by 306 runs and take the points for the win plus 5 bonus points with 3 bowling and 2 batting.
A quite unexpected and very comprehensive win by a much depleted side. The CC1 dream is still alive believe it or not if others are probably not. We go home to discuss the side that will face Warwickshire at Taunton on Friday.
A side the will NOT include Banton, Smeed, TKC, Lammonby, Abell, Gregory and at least one Rew.
Ahh well we will go with what we have and after this who knows what might happen.

As usual with 4 day games I'll close the report thread and ask for comments to be made on the already present game thread (lots of 'why no Banton' stuff already).

There will be no Abell, TKC, Smeed, Lammonby The Rews will be available - if England let them play of course.
Tom Banton will return to red ball cricket for the first time in 2026 and we will have Jordan Hermann for the next 2 games before we thank him for his service - like the excellent innings in Sunday's T20 v Warwickshire.
We will also probably see Archie Vaughan in the middle order and Jack will be back one would also assume.
Will we continuewith Alfie Ogborne after finally brining him into the Blast XI and will we bring back Migael Pretorius as it might be likely that we will rota at least one of the bowlers from the Blast and it probably won't be Lewis Gregory as we will need his bat. Daniel Sams will take a rest as his contract is T20 only so it looks like it might be either Jake Ball or Craig Overton. I'm afraid I don't know what to suggest with Josh Shaw his present involvement in squads suggest that he'll be ready to go if we need him as he sat out last Sunday.
it's a different side but not necessarily a weaker one. On a morale basis one can't be as sure though they may also want to show that they have the grit to get back on the horse after four consecutive losses in the short form - which has probably put aside chances of retaining the trophy this year.
The weather is on the variable side for the weekend but let's hope we put together a performance that also re-ignites the 2026 season for the club.

It makes no sense. The man busts a gut for Somerset. Who can forget his 46 v Surrey at the end of the 2024 season, whilst batting on one leg, having broken his ankle.
And his joy at scoring 371 v Worcs last year, albeit struggling somewhat thereafter.
At best it does seem very ‘strange’.

My concern is all of this preludes Banton signing white ball only contract with club.
Oddly the club have now removed the Banton part of the match preview on their website.
It's not been anything of a major priority of the bat until now. Why would that change? More likely he'd take the Sean Dickson path and look for a county he'd get more formats of cricket with if he felt he wasn't getting a shot at Taunton.
I doubt there will be all that many sittng out is this 'June' weather because it's not warm out there as the 48 people I can see in 2/3rds of the ground testify. It's not summer sitting watching cricket weather I'm afraid.
Notts have won the toss and will bowl first (Quelle Surpris).
No disrespect to Kian but I assume he is here for squad experience and the choice will be who plays between Alfie Ogborne and Jake Ball unless they are rota'ing other as well as Banton or Miggy P is actually having the mare of a middle season his second performances suggest.

Will summarise tonight and be back with it in the morning. Interesting they have sent Alfie in as a longish nightwatch option tonight. It that because Jack was having a go last night at this time I wonder? I guessed that Vukusic might get called up. Have only seen him on 2nd XI video clips, but he's looked impressive & has turned in some good performances I believe.
A pity we lost two wickets before the end, but Alfie did his job well & hopefully can hang around for a bit tomorrow. We really do need a lead of 300+ to try to push home our current advantage, as we've been in this position a couple of times this season & we know what happened !

A win by 306 runs with half a day to spare - now that's a result.
Five more wickets for Overton, though the loss of Lewis Gregory is a real shame. Hopefully at least some of our injured are getting close to being fit...!!
I haven’t been up to date with the injuries with being pretty busy and not interested in 2020 but how long is Tom A out for?
Really pleased that Alfie Ogborne took the winning catch, as he'd been having a bit of a mare of a day ip till then.
All the headlines will be about Thomas Rew, who followed up yesterday's maiden century with some excellent keeping today, and stand-in-skip Craig Overton's 5-for today. But the unsung (or certainly less-sung) hero of the match was Jordan Herrman and his watchful, patient batting when Somerset were put into bat in tricky conditions on the first morning. In total, the batting partnerships that he was involved in put on 306 runs (234 in the first innings, 72 in the second). Which just happens to be the winning margin.
(I always get frustrated because the physician in me wants to see the xrays!)
And yes, all too easily overlooked.
That said, Rew Jr Jr looks to be another absolute star in the making. That was an innings and a half.
Fingers crossed now for some good news on the medical front. Surely Tom K-C can't be that far away, which will fill one of the holes...
Perhaps we are likely to find room for at least two of those Tom-Toms against Warwickshire at Taunton on Friday, with yet another Tom (Rew of that ilk) possibly required elsewhere, as is his brother James.
Defending champions, top of the table and our few fit players (!) thrashed Notts.
It was also the first match where Thomas Rew wore the gloves in a championship match, substituting for James Rew, who had injured a hand whilst batting.
Serendipity.
GIven all the challenges thrown at us over recent weeks, we could surely only have dreamt of achieving that outcome at fortress Trent Bridge, against the unbeaten County Champions, despite our top order being decimated & our Captain cut off in his prime, mid game.
Agree completely with the above comments regarding the extremely valuable performance of Jordan Hermann & very much hope we can see more of him after next week.
Meantime, with Rew, Rew, Overton & Co. firing on all cyclinders, there is much to feel confident about.
If we can avoid our 'let's shoot ourselves in both feet' moments, there is no reason (well apart from yet more injuries perhaps), why we can't challenge at the top, come the business end of the season.
