Blast Game 2 - v Warwickshire at Edgbaston

New 'Grockle' Daniel Sams starts his second for Somerset as we travel to Birmingham undefeated in our first and looking to get some momentum going. Archie Vaughan travels as an addition to the squad but we go into this one with an unchanged side from the one that so comprehensively blew past Hampshire on Friday. the home side won the toss and chose toset a targert first so Somerset will bowl first.

The Bears win the toss and decide to bat first in gorgeous sunny weather. Somerset will bowl fielding the same side as the one that won on Friday evening;
Smeed, Banton (wk), Rew J, Abell, Rew T, Lammonby, Goldsworthy, Gregory, Sams, Overton, Ball
Craig and Jake open the bowling against Davies and Yates. they take 9 off CoVe and Ball's first overs and then Yates sends Ball's first ball of his second into the stands and then a four off the next ball which moves Yates to 17 from 9. He cuts the 4th also for four then picks up the 5th for 6 and Jake has gone for 20 from his first 5. The end of the third sees Warwickshire on 29 for 0.
In the fourth Davies tries to get in on the act and after a well fielded 2 he skies a top edge to James Rew and he goes for 2 at 31 in Overton's second. Beau Webster, their overseas Aussie is the next one in and he is soon facing our Overseas Aussie in Daniel Sams who takes the 5th. Webster is quickly into his work and has 12 to his name as he pushes a single off Overton in the 6th to reach 50 for 1. It is 51 at the end of the 'Powerplay' as Goldsworthy takes the 7th as usual. he goes for 5 as Gregory replaces Craig after his usual 3 in the early phase of the game and Yates steps across and flips him for four. However he is gone next ball as he pops one to James Rew hitting the ball straight to extra cover. He goes for 42 off 25 and Somerset are 60 for 2 as Hain comes to the middle.
1 for 7 for the skipper and the other Lewis holds them so they've pressed them to only 17 from the last 3 overs as we move to the 9th at 68 for 2. After 10 we have restrained them to singles most of the time and they have moved to 78 for 2 at the turnaround point.
Somerset hold the home side until Sam Hain hammers a boundary straight over Goldsworthy in the 12th. He is moving and Webster is now looking settled as Ball returns for the 13th and with the second the Aussie gets a knick at 41 and he is caught behind at 105 for 3.
That wicket brings the Bear's captain Barnard out to the middle as Lewis Junior looks to bowl out in the 14th with 19 from his first 3. Hain messes that up a bit with a 'muscled' straight six from his second delivery. Barnard also gets in on the act and sends another six. He ends with 4 overs for 36 after some tap and 127 for 3. Sams comes back for the 15th as this pair have added 22 from 10 balls. The Aussie produces a very good tight over going for only 4 as we move into the last 5.
Craig Overton is back for his last but Ed Barnard takes 10 off his first 2 balls with a four and a six. He then picks the next up off a length and another six arrives. He tries another and sends it up in the air and then into the hands of Gregory. Barnard goes for 28 from 11 at 147 for 4. This brings Vance Jani to the crease on home T20 debut. The Brummies expect a lot from this bat who is another product of SACA. The have 4 left at 149 for 4.
Jake is back to look to close out the game. His first 2 have gone for 26 and his second ball brings up the 150 with a single putting Jani on strike. He pulls out a 5 run over - something he does a lot nowadays. 154 for 4 with 18 balls to go. Lewis is back for his third (1 for 17 so far). Hain goes big and Thomas Rew misreads the ball and doesn't get to the ball and it falls short. Hain then hits a four - isn't it always the way? He goes for 9 and then loses a six on the full with his last ball as Hain moves on. 169 for 4 with 12 balls left. Hain has 44 for 31 as the pair now face Sams for the penultimate and last one from Daniel. He has gone for 24 so far. Hain goes across and sweeps him for six to go to 50 (his 34th) 32 balls 2 fours and 3 sixes. 177 for 4
Sams finishes with 4 overs 0 for 34 and a very clever over. Warwickshire then retire Jani out at 6 from 8 with 6 balls to go so the final over will see Hain with Thompson for the last one from Ball. Hain tries to go lng and is caught by Lammonby on the boundary rope. He goes for 52 from 35 at 180 for 6. In comes Woakes to face 5 balls. He guides one for four through the covers - shows he is a bowler who can bat. Thompson scrabbles a 2 and then Jake bowls a dot - excellent ball Mr Ball. The final ball is brilliantly stopped to save 2 on the boundary. 189 for 6 with Ball ending with 2 for 40
Somerset need 190 to win.
The Reply
Banton and Smeed face Woakes and that Hannon-Dalby bloke and after 2 overs we have seen the intent as we move to 18 for 0 with Tom on 7 and Will on 11 from 6. With that level of intent they always take risks and Smeed risks a little too much. He takes on the big boundary and Hannon-Dalby but fails as he is caught by Jani on the boundary for 12. 24 for 1 brings James Rew to the crease in the 4th. He finishes the over with 10 in terms of a four and a six. 34 for 1 as Jordan Thompson comes on at the other end.
We reach the end of the 'Powerplay' with a near catch of James Rew but we end at 55 for 1 with Banton on 28 from 19 and Rew has reached - luckily maybe 17 from 10. After Webster's 7th we see the first spin of the game (as Bants moves to 38) as Usman Tariq - the guy who stops and waits before bowling - comes on for the first time in the 8th. Banton reverses him n front of square but Yates is right on the boundary and can't take it. They take 11 off the over and move to 79 for 1. Barnard takes over from him for the 9th as the Somerset guys go past a 50 partnership but thta is it as an outstanding piece of fielding by the bowler has Tom short of his ground at the strikers end. Bants is not impressed - he thinks he was in but he has gone for 47 from 26 at 80 for 2. Tom Abell arrives in the middle.
Taz Ali is then introduced to bowl to the new man on the Warwickshire man's second game for his county. He goes for 11 and we are on 95 for 2 at the turnaround. Tariq is back on for the 11th and there is an appeal for a stumping of Rew but his back foot does not move. A wide takes us to 99 for 2 and then Rew crasheshim through the covers to bring up 103 for 2. After Thompson takes the 12th we have moved to 114 for 2 with the keeper moving into the 40s. The partnership has moved on to 34 and we need 76 from 47 balls as Hannon-Dalby returns and a low flat hit is just in front of the fielder. Not really a chance aAnd he had to dive to keep it inside the rope to be honest. Ali did well to get near to it.
Rew is looking for a 50 as he moves to 47 from 30 balls with another driven four. He can't however get the last one in the 13th and moves to 49 instead. Taz Ali takes the 14th while we still need 9 and over so it is by no means done at the moment. James moves to 53 from 33 balls off the next one with six ofurs and 1 six at 130 for 2. The partnership then reaches 53 with another boundary followed by a Rew six followed by a brutal straight 4 past the bowler's ear. He moves from 53 to 67 in 36 balls!! We need 46 from 36 and the balance is moving though 2 wickets and the game is definitely back in the balance.
James keeps finding the gaps in the field and hits another 4 off Tariq, followed by a reverse six to bring up 154 for 2. Rew is on to 78, his partner is on 13. We are now looking at a run a ball. We need 32 off 30 balls.
Woakes will bowl out in the 16th as James Rew reaches a T20 career best at 81 from 42. He turns that into 87 from 43 off Chris Woakes and we need 23 from 26. They have to find a ball as he puts it into the building site. After 16 Somerset are at 171 for 2 The partnership is 91 off 46 and most has come from the older Rew. He has 90 Abell has 18. Don't talk to me about our devastating bats at the moment. James Rew is far more than a 'red ball specialist'.
The two professionals look to win the game rather than get Rew to 100. He fails at 93 from 48 caught by Woakes at 187 for 3 in Tariq's last over. He leaves his brother needing to help Tom A to get 3 from 14 balls. Tariq bowls and Thomas Rew cuts and is well stopped on the boundary. The 18th over takes Tariq to 1 for 40 from his spell with a single tying the score.
Hannon-Dalby bowls his last, probably the last in the game. He dots the first but Abell drives the second for four and we win by 7 wickets with Abell finishing on 35 from 26 and Thomas Rew is undefeated on 1 from 1.
James Rew just took this away after a 47 from Tom Banton but we finish with 10 balls to spare. Another comprehensive win away. On we go.

Another very, very convincing victory.
Good work by Ball after being hit for 20 in his first over. Do we know why Lammonby only bowled one over?
Banton rather than Smeed this time, Rew Senior again and this time Abell contributed.
I noticed that Somerset scored fewer sixes but a lot more fours than the Bears, and was wondering whether that's a policy or just something that happens...
James certainly deserved a century but that 93 off 48 after his 47 off less than 30 on Friday shows that our 'red ball specialist' is a bit more than that.
Bet he shows very skillful drink carrying in the test while those who would struggle to stay with him wear the whites in the middle. But his time will come and one hopes he does this when they do finally give him a go.
Brillian performance at out T20 second home. Excellent 47 from Bants as well. He may have got more had SKY been there with the review system.
Rew sent up a catch off Tariq with three needed from 15 balls and received the warm ovation he deserved from the home supporters who knew they had seen a special talent.
I'm deaf, so I have no idea which of you heard it right, but I thought I'd put the other view out there for consideration.

As an aside, these algorithms can’t be that clever as they still haven’t worked out that I don’t like limited over cricket, especially 2020. So, I suppose also that although I very much feel a Somerset fan when I watch County Championship, I can never be a thoroughbred though I am always pleased when they have success for all of you .

a) a 22 yr old man who has played county cricket consistently well over three or four seasons, has scored over a dozen first-class centuries and has been on scintillating form this season so far in two formats.
b) a very slightly older man who has played very little county cricket, has scored a single first-class century and has played no first class cricket for months, despite the chance of playing six times for Warwickshire, preferring to spend much of recent time on the bench reserved for spare players.
Which one do you select to play for England in the first Test of the summer? I told you it was hard...

Somerset were always on top with the run chase, but never by that much – and there were a fair number of near misses in the field. And I swear that J Rew hit a ball back so hard that the bowler chose not to attempt a catch (though I could be maligning the bowler).
The much-vaunted spin twins didn't hit the heights the commentators hoped for, and Osman Tariq's bag of tricks didn't work either on the day.
And Banton didn't look at all happy being given out; I watched it at quarter speed (yes, I really am that sad!) but I couldn't tell either way. It was certainly close.
Nurse has just bullied me back into bed to take my fantasy-calming pills.

Unless of course you mean going the furthest possible north and south calms things.
