Ben Green is released back for this important Metrobank game - Thanks awfully.  Davey and Meredith are missing Leonard and Aldridge take their places and Josh Thomas misses out.  Let's see how they do shall we?

Metrobank Cup Game 8 v Worcestershire Friday August 9 2024

The side changes again as the Welsh give us a franchise player back in Ben Green.  The side is:

Umeed, Thomas G, Goldsworthy, Rew, Dickson, Vaughan, Green, Aldridge, Leach, Ogborne, Leonard

It seems a poor decision to 'rest' Josh Thomas after he made a 50.  Do we need 2 more bowling allrounders in Green AND Aldridge when Kasey has not had a great series so far and George Thomas has been bowling well.  Where is Josh Davey? When he has just hit some form?  Why not Riley Meredith after letting him bowl in a game?  Good to see Archie getting more than one game but they still have provided a team that needs to convince in this game.

Somerset won the toss and choose to bowl first.  Alfie Ogborne and Ned Leonard open for us against Roderick and Pollock.  Alfie starts with a maiden and by the 5th over they have given the "Rapids" 33 without loss.  With the 7th over we see Greener for the first time at 39 for 0.  His first is chopped just past Lewis just past the Trade Nation and the 50 partnership comes off the 4th ball after he goes for 11.  It's 52 after his first.

Pollock flips one to the Caddyshack and is caught by Green off the bowling of Ned for 30 off 24 at 55 for 1.  In comes Jones.  Back at the MT is Ogborne after one from Ben???  He produces another maiden.  Jack comes on at the River for the 11th at 62 for 1.  But it is Alfie who strikes as Roderick helps one around to the CA and is walking before Leonard takes the catch at fine leg. 68 for 2 and he goes for 35 off 41 balls.  In comes Libby. Ogborne has 1 for 26 off 5 and a half.

A close run out in the next over with the ball going over the stumps from Goldsworthy with Libby nowhere near.  He almost goes again later in the over but they manage to stay in and get to 73 for 2. The next over Ned Leonard changes ends - just after Alfie takes a wicket??? They reach 81 for 2 after 15 overs.

As Jack starts the 20th over Worcestershire move towards the 100 at 93 for 2.  Green has put in another over from the MT which went better than the first which went for 11 - the second went for 4.  Libby and |Jones have settled but the rate is not exactly belting along as they both are in the teens but off mid 20 balls so you could say the 'press' is on, at least from Leach's end as he has kept his 5 under 4 an over (5 for 19).  They reach 99 by the end of the 20th and take the 1 to move them to 100 after Ben's fist ball of the 21st.

Ben breaks through with a ball that stops in the pitch and the ball floats out to Leonard again, at mid wicket this time. Its 101 for 3 as Brookes takes Jones place (14).   Ben bowls a short and wide one and Jake Libby cuts it weakly to point in the 23rd and departs for 24 at 110 for 4.  'Golden Arm' returns and continues where he left off.  Up the other end, Jack is not taking wickets but he is also not going for runs as he finishes his 7th with 0 for 26. Edavalath has taken Libby's place and the visitors reach 111 as we move into the 25th.

At the halfway point in the innings, the score is 116 for 4 with Edavalath on 1 and Brookes on 12. But that is all Edavalet gets as he limply pats the ball back to Leachy at 117 for 5 - The 'Rapids' are rapidly giving away their wickets presently, this has little to do with the bowling one has to say.  Taylor walks out to partner Brookes and is off the mark straight away.  The 26th ends at 122.

On comes Lewis for the 29th from the MT with the score on 131 for 5.  He goes for 6 with one boundary in the spell.  Leachy will bowl out at the other end having done his job today, bowling 10 overs for 37 runs and 1 wicket.   Interesting contest between Brookes and Lewis as he likes to sweep the spinner and the bowler is saying to him "have a go then mate".  Worcester move towards 150 at 146 as Kasey is introduced from the River end and he ties them down and keeps the score under the next target, going for 1 from his first.

Going for the 150 Brookes crazily comes up the wicket and pops the ball straight to Leach at mid on to go for 33 at 147 for 6 at the start of the 33rd.  In comes Singh which has Goldsworthy going around the wicket to the new man and although they go to 150, it is not comfortable.  In fact Singh should have been out to Umeed who spills a pretty easy catch which he loses off the tip of his fingers.  Pretty regulation catch to be honest.  Singh survives on four.  Kasey follows up with a good second over and holds them to 155.  Singh produces the first six of the innings into the Ondaatje car park from the first ball of Lewis Jr's next over but besides that they take singles and Goldsworthy finshes that one with 4 overs 1 for 26.

With 15 overs to go then the visitors stand at 164 for 6, wondering what a defendable target is here and whether they can get to something like it.  Somerset would like them out within the over quota for less than 200.  Taylor sets out his intent with the second six of the innings straight back over Kasey's head into the Botham seats.  Presently these two look more likely to hit the double hundred target  as Taylor sixes into the Ondaatje before the end of the over to take the opposition to 180.

The present partnership have decided to push the score on and Taylor especially is swinging and connecting.  By the end of the 38th they have added 23 runs in quickfire style and the 200 is most efinitely on before the 40th.  This prompts us to vary the attack and intriduce Archie Vaughan at the MT give them some spin to contend with.   Archie does his job and traps Singh on the back foot bowling him for 19 at 189 for 7.  In comes Hinley.  Archie's second wicket and a decent first over today of 1 for 3.

The 200 arrives as Hinley climbs into Aldridge with 2 consecutive sixes taking the bowler to 0 for 39 off 5 (after going for 5 off his first 2). Some brainless late over bowling after good front end tight stuff. Archie continues but the bats are looking to get the ball moving and get after him a bit in the 41st wth a couple of boundaries.  Dickson rings the changes with Ben Green back for the 42nd at the River with the score at 220 and Worcestershire looking for something over 250.  Taylor is looking to go for it at 39 and Hinley has 25 from 11 so the chase is most definitely on if the Somerset bowlers let them loose.

A decent over not helped by some sloppy infield work sees 9 added to the total.  Alfie is returned to the MT with 8 to go.  He produces a decent one as well with no fielding erros and the score moves to 236.  Green bowls a bit of filth to Hinley and he puts it straight down Ogborne's throat in front of the CA.  236 for 8 and Green goes to 3 for 41.  In comes Sturgess and gets bounced for 5 balls so the score stays the same at the end of the 44th.

In the 45th Taylor is looking to push it and looks for a second, this pulls Sturgess out of the crease and Ned Leonard fires the ball to Rew who takes the bails off 239 for 9

An important game at home at 11am on Friday as we need the points against Worcestershire to keep in the race to the Trent Bridge Final

They both need to perform if they are included because anyone they replace is hard done by after Wednesday.
Kasey will probably be in for Josh on batting ability. Can't see Charlie replacing any of our young professionals. Especially now Sonny will not be staying Alfie and Ned need all the game play we can give them

I've really enjoyed every one of these games, even the poor ones. The young guys have done everything they have been asked to and Archie Vaughan coming in in this one to calm things down and take us home was mature beyond his years. Excellent game once again.

Terrific innings by Lewis Goldsworthy & his partnership with James Rew was simply wonderful. It was a surprise when each one of them departed and a great shame Lewis fell just before a very well deserved century.

Good to see Archie Vaughan steadying the ship towards the end as well.

Bowling was generally better, albeit still room for improvement re pitching too short.

Excellent win.

That was a win that we needed/had to win, and what a good job we made of it, apart from two batsman who didn't score out first ball.



Lewis Goldsworthy perfectly timed straight hit for 4 runs.



James Rew timing of the ball resulted in 4 runs.



Although you can't see it, Fatch Singh was bowled by Archie Vaughan.

Mike, I complained to the club recently about the "riot police" idling-away their time around the ground and their reply was in effect," tough, get used to it". Very sad.

I am sorry to say the complaints from supporters on how the club is being run is getting worse, I even complained to the private stewards about handling of people's personal items, saying it is one of the quickest way of spreading viruses/germs from one person to another, that fell on death ears.
I wonder what the health regulators would think of it if they knew?

Do they go through everything being brought into the ground in cars, I wonder? I saw some old man being robbed of his bottle of water recently. There is all that plus the way that they are dressed, looking ike they are spoiling for a fight. How do other clubs manage without all this nonsense?

Haven't seen anyone searching car owners once they are in the ground. It's a good point. Doesn't seem to matter unless you have a bag.

At the changeover today there were 4 security staff N S E and W of the groundstaff looking hard at fans who must have been 50 yards from them behind barriers Not sure what the point was. 🤪🤪
