Notts - A complete washout?

Rain for two days with 20 runs made and two home wickets lost is not what Somerset need at the moment. The weather relents on day 3 but this game is a 'washout' as part of the run in to the CC1 title unless the two captains become very inventive indeed

After rain for two days, one foray to the crease, 20 runs to Somerset and two LBW wickets to Fletcher (Trecothick and Suppiah), we finally get this game underway at the beginning of Day 3 in absolutely wonderful conditions!
The Somerset side is;
Trescothick, Suppiah, Compton, Hildreth, Kieswetter, Buttler, Trego, Kirby, Thomas, Willoughby and Dockrell (making his CC1 debut)
Notts won the toss and put us in and then struck twice before the rain came and the game went into stasis until 11 on Friday. The chances of a result coming from this that is Pro Somerset are very slim but we'll see how it develops over the first two sessions and I suppose, take it from there.
Presently Compton and Hildreth are facing Shreck and Fletcher and they have almost doubled the score without further loss. However, it doesn't stay so wonderful as we pass 50 and Compo plays a lovely forward defensive shot down to the wrong line and sees his stumps skittled by Andre Adams. There is the basic picture of the morning session. Some good shots, batsmen looking comfortable bowlers maitaining decent lines and occasionally a batsman mistaking the trajectory of the ball and losing their castles! Kieswetter did just this at 72 and was really surprised by it. Hildreth was less surprised but no less out at 88. Batting points do not look that likely by the lunch interval by which Buttler and Trego have moved the score on to 130 for 5.
After lunch the bonus point situation looks even less likely when Thomas replaces Pete when he flips one off the glove (though PT might disagree with that assessment of where it hit him) from Fletcher to Read. 137 for 6 and this day is not looking like a good one for the home side in terms of getting something from this game.
And the Andre Adams show continues as he gets his inswinger working once again and we continue to misread the line of the ball. Jos sees his off stump uprooted before we make 150 (147) and Alf then drives at one and hears the clatter at 154. However we have the team of Kirby and Dockrell to come and they seem less impressed by the Notts bowlers both hitting boundaries and in Steve's case hooking Charlie Shreck for four.
It doesn't last though and Adams gets George LBW off the toe at 177 after a partnership of 23. In comes Charl to a long conversation with his partner about batting strategy. Adams bowls, Charl steps to off and misses the ball as it flies just past his stump. He misses the next so Adams bowls a straight full slower one and out goes the stump and we are gone for 177. Adams takes 6 for 33.
Now that's an interesting situation except we get no bonus batting points. Hmmm

Forecast has deteriorated sharply and now suggests a virtual wash-out with 3 days out of 4 being heavily curtailed.
Lancs forecast to get in 3 days of play, and ditto Warks.
Thursday a wash-out throughout the land but this pm forecast to be washed out in TA1.
We need to win the toss and field in the hope of getting some bowling points before the rain.

Is it our turn to set up a contrived result. TO do that I think we'd have to set the chase for Nottsbecause everyone assumes-rightly or wrongly, that our batsman can get anything and would not set a sensible total

Anybody know what the squad is today? Once again on the morning of the match unless I have missed it there is nothing on the clubs web site.
Don’t go by who was playing for the seconds yesterday because that was a one day match and some of them could return for today if needed.
Somerset wanted a strong team yesterday because it was a Trophy match and up until yesterday the seconds hadn’t lost one, unfortunately they lost the match with one player James Regan scoring half the runs.

George to play according to sccc website, but no squad. Would assume the rest pick themselves today.

The weather forecasts give me optimism. Even though we will
have rain "The Weather Channel" and "Accuweather" say our rivals will have worse. Warwick in prticular have a terrible forecast for the match beginning on the 18th. This should solve the statistical problem of their game in hand over us.
Maybe we will only get three out of four days play, let us hope as it is our home game it will be a three day wicket and we have been winning in three days or less anyway.
Notts too in the last match were "blooding" new players, they have given up on the 4 dayers.
I think you will find that Notts have given up, only on the odd opener that has been ineffective anyway. I can't see too many other new faces in their squad for this one. Not that I'm saying they still have a chance in the CC, just that it's not true that they're resting proven performers as they have given up.
Just looked at the actual NOtts team - Turner, the new opener, is the only face that will be unfamiliar to our crowd, unless they have not seen Darren Bravo before on the TV. I think Notts have picked as strong a team as they could muster. No evidence of "quit," in the team selection.
As taung says, the weather forecast is not as bad as all that. Showers / dry spells, so some play will be lost, but probably not as much as 3 days out of 4?
So now we know the team selection - exactly as you all predicted. Interesting that Dockrell is slated to bat below Charl - can he really be worse?

All of those players have been given opportunities - and all have failed. I don't think Wood is on the staff anymore.

Unless we're playing on a complete 'green mamba,' of a track then it would be very tough to force a win in only seven sessions. Realistically, it would be less difficult to do it bowling first as then there would be a chance to bundle out most of the Notts guys in this first session today.
As it is we will have to fight hard, I would imagine, just to survive and then you'd normally expect an easier time after lunch as pitch eases, ball softens etc, but there is unlikely to be much of an after lunch in this one.

Matt Wood was released by Notts at the end of last season. Not sure whether Neil Edwards has recovered from the broken wrist he sustained earlier in the year.

With Tres and Arul failing we can now truly judge what we have got further down the order! I guess we will be looking for around 250 to be competitive - see chaps!! - positive thinking!!!
Well, in sunny weather on Friday hope to get up to 400 for full batting points. And then bowl them out once on Saturday. A max points draw but still keep us there or thereabouts, especially if the weather also leads to draws elsewhere.

Re our old boys not in Notts. I think it is worth noting the subsequent careers of those who have been let go of. Rosey often gets stick for his judgement but in my book he's pretty good. Give or take the odd Omari..............

Commentators report that rain is still falling; they will come on air again after tea - which they say will be 4.40, but I would have thought should be 4.00 (though it sounds like it could be high tea and an early night for the boys).

Well, if tomorrow's dreadful weather also materialises as forecast, then we will be resuming on Friday in what one assumes will be really damp conditions in terms of a pitch that has sweated under the covers etc.
Friday is meant to be a nice, sunny day so batting may get easier as the day wears on. But if we start badly on Friday, then it might even be worth declaring and starting to bowl in search of the three bowling points, rather than waiting until batting has become much easier - i.e. if it looks like we'll struggle to get three or more batting points.
I think we'd get away with a declaration under those cirumstances because Justin Langer got away with that kind of move at Lord's against Middx in Div Two.

The Beeb were spot on with today's forecast.Some people look in the wrong places!
Norwich - they didn't get it far wrong. The Met Office forecast specifically for Taunton - not the generic one for the SW - had it pretty much right, except the rain arrived perhaps an hour or so early.
The forecast last night indicated passing showers. Lets hope they can get out again today.

Irrespective of the weather forecast for the next few days, I personally want to see a display of guts, application and fight from our batting line - up, on a par with what Sussex has done today from being in a position of 27 - 3.
And yes, that includes everyone down to Willoughby and beyond, should he not be in at Number 11.

It was said Compton was hired to replace Langer in the batting line up. He certainly seem to have done that and there is no reason to think we will not go on to greater things.

The line of the forecast on the map for Thursday seems to show that the rain will only reach Hankridge (Sainsburys etc) Taunton coming from south !!!!! and will spread as far as London. Should be OK then!!

Marcus Trescothick, with the few balls that we watched today it looked like ball may have been moving around, it was hard to tell from Gimblett’s Hill with the pitch so far over towards the Andy Caddick Pavilion.

As ridiculous as it may sound something like 300 off 80 i'd say would be about the required bait.
They have no incentive to accept anything challenging, we are the ones who have to push in my opinion.
Others will say play safe but in my opinion we need to take risks to win this thing, there are 4 of us in the running, we wont do this with 3 safe draws and 1 win.
Plus you dont even get chance to rig every game, so if we can do this i say do it.
I'd far rather us come 4th/5th having tried to win it than miss out by 4/5 pts having settled for 2/3 safe draws.

But Warwick our main statistcal rival look to have same problems and there is plenty of time for the weather factor in the next month to even out. In a straight fight I beleive we are Red Hot Favourites to win the thing. I would accept going into that last Lancashire match one win behind them.

If there must be a contrivance here, I'd prefer to see something along these lines;

Somerset bat until they are all out or until Friday's play has ended, whichever occurs sooner.
On Saturday, Notts chase whatever we made on Friday.

AG, there's a lot can happen between now and this evening / tomorrow lunchtime / etc. I don't see any point in going into this level of detail this far out - by close of play tonight, nothing may have changed, we could be 50 all out or 250 for 2.
There's really no point in playing cricket at all if one is going to pre-determine all eventualities based on a weather forecast, teams' possible batting and bowling prowess and expected thoughts in captains' heads at any given future moment.
I'm sure Tres will have a few potential strategies in his head which will chop, change and come to fruition as this game evolves.

I don’t want to give anybody false hope but it has stopped raining and the clouds are higher.

Well, I think the overwhelming probability is that nothing will occur today, SP, hence looking at what could happen from the start of play tomorrow.
Of course, if we said to Notts that there would be a double forfeiture of innings - with our 2nd dig and their first dig being forfeited and the arrangement otherwise being the same, then I'd think Chris Read would surely go for that, simply because Tres is already out in our first dig so they'd surely back themselves to get us out on Friday for a manageable total to chase on Saturday.

We have closely followed and really enjoyed the success of Gareth Andrew and Wes Durston.
Not right to speculate on the rights and wrongs of their departures, but well done to two lads who tried so hard for Somerset.

I looked this up and according to a cricinfo article dated Feb 2008, the ECB has a massive wad of cash which will be used to 'install floodlighting at every County HQ ground and improve drainage at all international venues, with subsequent roll-out to all Counties.'

I may be wrong but im sure that at one point 3 covers were being wheeled off at once with 2 pushing each one, i may have got it wrong.

AG, you are correct Taunton has always been known as a good draining ground, even today there was no water to be seen lying on the outfield.
When the flats were built it was thought they may cause a problem but there is a drainage channel built along the bottom of the Somerset stand that takes the water away that runs down the stand.

Wsm fan, I had a look at the record and you were correct in one respect they did have some extra help with the covers, it looked to me like it was from some of the Sky people who always make sure the advertising boards are correct, they are normally friendly and helpful.
I was in the groundsman area at the scheduled start time before the match got underway when the covers were taken off then put on again with only the four of them going it.

The outground is a bit of a mess and if it's supposed to be less 'bobbly' then I think something went a bit pear shaped.

We've really missed a Caddick type strike bowler. We seem to be innocuous, so it suggests that we've done really well in the second innings.

How can we make batting look so difficult and then go for 7 an over without a wicket in the first six overs of their innings.

Bit too early to write off the CC1 because of a heavily rain affected match after a three match winning streak put us back in contention. The batting came up against Andre Adams getting his wicket taking ball working from one end - he has been taking a few with it this year.
Would Marcus and Arul have struggled in the present sunny and pleasant conditions? I would humbly suggest not really.
Will this game put a dent in our progress? Probably, but it will be the weather that is primarily to blame rather than a poor Somerset performance.

After Tea commentary....if anyone is listening to the commentary online after Tea can they please give me an assessment of the quality etc of it because they think they had technical problems today but I'm not sure what they were.

Well, George's debut was promising - especially the first half of his spell. He beat Patel outside off and did him in the flight with one that Patel skied and Alf should probably have caught.
Only Charl really was below par with the ball. Adams the difference today, with bells on.
Hope we get a bit of play tomorrow and one more point, at least.

In our opening bowlers favour, they rarely bowl any long hops that are hooked or pulled, or square cut. HOWEVER the number of half volleys that disappear to the boundary are frightening. They clearly weren't taking note of Fletcher, Shriek and particularly Adams who bowled brilliantly on perfect lengths with the expected results. It would be interesting to check how many opponents have got off to flying starts this season in the CC before we have manged to get the first few wickets. Luckily we have Tres to do that flying start for us normally, but when he fails?
Still think it was a strange day. Each of Compton, Hildreth, Kieswetter and Buttler looked comfortable, with no real playing and missing, let alone nicks, and then all were abruptly out in comprehensive fashion.

I think the usual phrase when a batsman's bat is not as close to his pad as it should be is that you could drive a bus through the gap. Looking at the photo of Charl, you could park a bus length-ways in that gap!

I got there with a few drops of rain falling and overcast conditions. Our two batters Kirbs and George hit some nice shots and didn't look hugely troubled. When George and C harl got out and Notts came out to bat so did the Bl**dy Sun.

Marcus distinctly unimpressed with the batting today, so I can only surmise that at least some of the Adams wicket taking balls must not have come in that much. Because other than guys being bowled there wasn't anything obvious to complain about ie we did not have batsmen getting themselves out with wild yahoos so I assume Marcus feels that some of our guys played around straightish ones to be bowled.
I do think Craig will be disappointed with his dismissal as it looked a somewhat lackadaisical defensive shot with a big gate. He can certainly be proud of the way he kept, though.

There have been too many 'bad days at the office' this year, it would appear.
Forecast i saw appear rain around all morning and up until 1-2pm, may be lucky (depending on your view of how things may go) and avoid it but appears very unlucky to be a full days play...

According to the weather page linked here there is a 100% chance of rain from 1:00 which decreases to 97% by 6 o'clock tomorrow afternoon so I wouldn't concrete your plans for the second and third sessions.

On the bbc 24 hour one, but using the rain radar at the foot of that page it seems to contradict the 3 hourly pictures used above.
Guess upshot is there is rain about coming up from Cornwall Devon, we are likely to get some of it but may be lucky/unlucky and have it miss.
As always best idea is probably open the curtains in the morning and judge it then, one gust if wind over night and it may all change, who knows, weather forecasters never seem to.....

I was pondering, though, that old conundrum, crowd wise, of the fact that most people are at work for most of the duration of each CC game.
I was wondering if, during the lightest periods of the summer there would be any mileage in starting games later, so as to be able to sell discounted tickets to an after-work brigade? Say from mid-May to mid-July could start games at 1.15 or so, aiming to play to say 9.15, rather than 6.30? Would many in Taunton come down for the final 3-4 hours of play?
Obviously, I know the T20 has to be played but there would be 8 weeks in the above time-frame, which could allow 4 or 5 CC rounds, as well as 3 weeks worth of T20.

It is funny how my comment that was not meant to be serious at the time has generated a few posts; I agree that posters should be balanced in their posts both negative and positive the ones that only see the negative side are still entitled to their views, it also works both ways there are a few that are the opposite.

wsm fan, the best I can say is if it was 11 o/clock play would start. the clouds are high no rain since 8am.

When, in your opinion, were the days that Somerset CCC was a "laughing stock", Jerry?
I personally do not recall that we were considered to be a "laughing stock" during the 1950's - a decade in which Somerset finished in bottom place of the County Championship for four consecutive seasons.
True, we were a poor club, both financially, and as a consequence on the field as well, but we were never considered to be a laughing stock.
The days when Somerset could justifiably be labelled with that term (and I had heard it used by the players and officials of our opponents at the time) were 1985 and 1986.
With Botham (Captain in 1985), Richards and Garner all in the side, we finished bottom and one - from - bottom respectively.
There was a lot wrong both on, and even more so, off the field. In an era, which many people still regard as being a part of “the glory years”, we had sunk to the very bottom of the pit. There were some around at the time who blamed “player power” as being the root cause, and the divisions amongst members were very deep – rooted, and up to a point still are, even after the passing of 25 years.
The backlash was enormous, and as most of us know there was an abrasive special general meeting at Shepton Mallet. Most of those who attended were not only current members, but “life – long supporters” as well, but they “put their heads above the parapet” and voted in favour of the committee’s decision – and thank goodness in my opinion they did.
Yes, we were a “laughing stock” then, and I hope that I never again have to witness such an experience; but perhaps, Jerry, you recall a different era when we assumed that unfortunate tag.

I'm not sure I can recall too many days like this of days where rain arrives in the SW and just seems to get stuck there. This happened on Wed too - rain in the SW which never progressed anywhere else. Very frustrating.
It's not so bad when it sweeps across the country from left to right because at least we usually then get play later on and other Counties also get rained off.

May we never return to those awful days when personality was everything, and results? - who cared! If he was playing today I would still travel to see ITB play, whether it was batting, bowling or fielding, and also his WI colleagues - but playing please under a less self-serving captain.

Hants are fighting back well, effectively 111 - 4. Getting 200 in the 4th innings could be a problem.
I think the chances Warwick will win their match next week are slim. Away at Yorkshire, with a bad forecast and probably the biggest problem, their only real strike bowler Woakes will be absent playing representative cricket.
One win behind Lancs is no problem even if it goes to last match of season at Taunton.

Another frustrating morning. It is imperative that Warwicks don't win but as long as we can stay within striking distance of Lancs there is always hope.
I don't share the analysis that Hants might win with a 200 lead. Scorecard suggests it is getting flatter there. But it's possible that Hants could get a lead closer to 300 and then if there's a bit of weather around, perhaps it could still be a draw?
If no more rain play will restart at 2:15. Looks promising....ish

Woakes' figures interesting: 7-20 in first innings, 0-69 in the second. After top-scoring with 64, maybe he feels it's time for somebody else to step up.
Everything suggests it's very flat at Edgbaston. Draw hopefully an increasing possibility.

We touched on this subject the other day the rules say no team can declare to stop the other team from getting bonus points.

We have struggled to get wickets and got them in clutches but the end result is the best we could hope for in the end, it was also good to see Willoughby ending up with four wickets.

Now for a very good catch from Steve Kirby, he ended up facing the other way from a high hit shot from M Wessels off bowling of Charl Willoughby.

From that last shot, I guess Kieswetter's catch of Mullaney must've been very good; SK playing to leg and the ball turning across him - never a bad catch standing up.

I'd sacrifice today and Wednesday if I had to, to produce monsoons in Nottingham and either Leeds or Scarborough ( not sure where the Warks game is to be held?)
Current forecasts suggest Durham will get a full day on Monday before the weather breaks down and the forecast for Warks is unsettled throughout.
It's pouring down in Dorchester this morning so hoping that's not also the case in TA1.

Fair comment. As with the T20 our stellar NRR means that our
rivals have to exceed our points total not just equal it. This seems to give us a telling built in advantage, wonder if it was a deliberate plan of action.
Next week the weather and England calls should have an effect
on Durhan and Warwick. Somerset could make considerable progress as luck evens out.
Net run rate only comes into play after wins have been counted. We should be OK on that as long as we win one of the 2. If we lose both then we come second and don't qualify as Durham are bound to be a better second than us.As you say taung our run rate should see us through if we win one more game.
