The new men are ready and waiting, Murali Kartik is named along with Roelof van der Merwe who is in at number 3 on the batting line-up because of the absence of Craig Kieswetter. Kirby and Compton make up the eleven and we have won the toss and will bat first againsty Corky's lot. But we are 37 for 3 as I do this with Dimitiri Mascarenhas taking all three.

Here we are at the start of the 'Hit and Giggle' as it is popularly called and we face the "Champions" Hampshire in our first match at their concrete bowl of a stadium.
Our first starting eleven is without our second keeper Craig Kieswetter and so it is;
Trescothick, Trego, van der Merwe, Hildreth, Compton, Buttler, Suppiah, Kartik, Kirby, Thomas, Gregory
We won the toss and decided to take them on by setting a target. Cork started the bowling and went for eleven as Marcus and Trigger went for him. Unfortunately Mascarenhas at the other end is bowling full and stumps to stumps and he gets The Boss with his 3rd ball. 11 for 1 and not the start we wanted.
Roelof is the next man in and is obviously expected to belt the ball - he plays here for the Titans and the Chargers so it is a place he is well used to. He is probably there because Craig K is not available but he does get into the game immediately and fires two boundaries in his first over. Unfortunately Mascarenhas is up for this and gets him in his next at 33 for an 11 ball 15. Good scoring rate but not long enough - but he was up for it immediately.
In comes James Hildreth but 5 balls later he becomes Dimi's third victim for just 2 taking the Hampshire bowler to 3 overs 3 for 9. Cork also brings on Briggs to tie down Trego while this is happening. Compton is the next man in but by now the Hampshire bowlers are in charge. Mascarenhas bowls out for 19 and they bring on Tahir, the nemesis from the final of 2010 for the 9th. We pass 50 before he comes on and Pete looks to take him on producing the first six of the tournament straight back over the bowler's head to take us to 67 at halfway.
The second half of the innings starts with Wood and Pete deposits his first to the boundary for 6 and takes 8 off the 11th. He is looking for it but it seems it is not a flat wicket and it is a case of putting the blade to the right ball. Nick is in the support role ready to push the score on when necessary and accelerate towards the end. Meanwhile Trigger goes to 48 with his third six but is very lucky when he scoops Tahir's next into no man's land. He does however go 50 off 30 with the next ball. It is his game for the taking at 85 for 3 with a 50 including 4 fours and 3 sixes.
Briggs is in for the 13th and keeping the Somerset men honest with singles or doubles only until Compo reverse sweeps him for a boundary. They keep going at 10 and are 95 with 8 overs to go. Cork is back on for the 14th and Trigger brings the 100 to take him to 55 and is then out to a low 'skimmer' very well caught by Vince the very next ball 100 for 4. We didn't want that! At the start of the 15th in comes Jos Buttler facing Briggs and he is straight off the mark. Compton pushes for 2 and is the man sweating as he is judged as making his ground...JUST! Now there is a turn up. Nick HASN'T run himself out!!
At the end of 15 we have 110 and the pressure is on Jos to take on Tahir. He simply milks the single and Tahir has Compo in all kinds of trouble for a couple of balls. However he does want to take the SA spinner on but they only take 6 off the over. 24 balls to go. Wood takes the 17th and we aren't hitting enough big run balls. Compton walks outside his stumps and gets one to his body which would have been wide if he hadn't moved. Tim Robinson says to him "You can't walk over there and then expect a wide!". Wood does very well until Compo puts him into the crowd. 126 for 4 with 3 to go. Is the 150 on? Mascarenhas says that the wicket is two paced - "Slow and Slower" so who knows.
Jos goes for Tahir, gets a leading edge and is caught in the gully at 132 halfway through the 18th. This brings in Arul Suppiah in who is off pushing for two but Compton isn't interested in the second 135 for 5 with 12 balls to go. Cork comes in for the penultimate over. Arul strokes him for one. Compo hits a length ball and is caught in the covers 136 for 6. 37 off 40 for Nick - still not sure he's a T20 game. 10 balls to go with Gregory the new man in. Cork bowls a dot and then they run two. 150 does not look on with these two I'm afraid as Arul keeps finding the fielder on the boundary. Cork goes for too few and he finishes with 2 for 24 with only 4 from the over and a wicket.
Wood gets the last one at 139 for 6. Ball 1 once more Suppiah finds the boundary fielder 1 run. Gregory misses the next one before taking 2 off the third. Wood bowls a wide and then bowls Gregory as he drags it onto his stumps. 2 balls to go and out comes Kartik to hopefully smack a couple. But all he does is take a single 144 for 7. Arul takes the last ball and they take a single. 145 for 7. I'd say that is 20-ish short.
The Reply
Alf gets his first over in the UK against Lumb and Adams. They start well and take 8 but find Kirby dangerous in the second. They take 13 off the two. Gregory replaces Thomas for the third and Lumb is almost run out off the 5th ball of the over. IF Hildreth had hit and all that. Unfortunately he didn't and Lewis goes for 11 off his first. 24 after 3.
Steve will probably be bowled through as he takes the fourth but Adams gets his length ball away and when he tries the slow one he goes for another boundary. Hampshire are well up with the rate as they move towards 40 at the end of the 4th. 35 for 0 and 11 more off the over. Too many too soon with Lumb on 19 and Adams on 16.
Marcus brings on RvdM for the 5th. They go to 42 but one shot was a six from Lumb so he did quite well. Nevertheless the home side are there or there abouts. Alf changes ends and nearly has Lumb as he nearly puts it down Kirb's throat - but it doesn't and Lumb moves up a gear with a six off the next one to bring up the 50. Thomo is going for a lot - 24 off his 2!!
For the 7th Trescothick brings on Kartik to "stem the tide" at 58 for 0. But he doesn't as Lumb sixes him over mid off and then takes a four two balls later as he goes to 47 off 25 balls. They are going for 10 an over with all their boys having been given a run. Only Pete T to go! He is on for the 8th. They have the rate down to under 6 an over and we need some wicket work quick. He only goes for 5 but Lumb goes to 50 off 29 deliveries.
Lewis is called back for his second but Hampshire are nearly 40 runs ahead at the end of the 9th and haven't lost a wicket yet!! They need 66 from 66 at the end of the 9th and no-one looks like getting a wicket I'm afraid. So, to prove me wrong, Trego gets one with a full toss, just under waist high, which Lumb takes hold of and is acrobatically caught jjust this side of the rope by Arul Suppiah. 90 for 1. The SKY commentators are full of wonderful things to say about Lumb, even though he has hardly eclipsed the innings of the man who got him - Pete Trego! He only did 'quite well'.
The 100 arrives in the 13th off MK after RvdM stops them getting it at the end of the 12th. Then Adams looks to sweep Kartik who flights one and takes his middle stump out. 101 for 2. They need 45 off 44 balls and MacKenzie is at the crease to do it for them. It's 45 off 42 at the end of the over and Kartik is getting turn. RvdM continues. He's tight and difficult to get away but he bowls a wide which goes for four halfway through! With another one that goes between Jos's legs but which is wonderfully saved by Hildreth, they are 111 for 2 after 14. MK bowls out during the 15th, we could have done with him having two sets. Should Marcus bring on Suppiah?
Murali finishes with a very credible 1 for 23. RvdM will bowl out in the next one with them needing 26 off 29. We don't have enough to play with and our slow men have done their job before we have broken this side. Mackenzie places one to the boundary just after his partner Vince has done it and it is 19 to win with 24 left and only seam to come. Pete and Alf should be the last men but as Alf is presently going at 12 an over it shouldn't be too long before this one is put to bed. Mackenzie dabs one for four and then just pops the single out - it is a "walk in the park" from here. At the end of the 17th they need 12. Hampshire will get to ZERO off this (they were minus 2 because of a dodgy pitch last season). Thommo is on for the 18th with no leeway for error. He goes for four off his first thanks to a slog to deep mid wicket (no man there)from Vince. He bounces him with the second ball and his slow ball goes for four to the mid wicket boundary off his third. A single off the fourth leaves 3 and Mackenzie turns it into 2 with the 5th. It's gone and SKY are talking about a 'drubbing'. Alf ends with a yorker and endss with 34 off 3. He needs to get better!!
Pete finishesthe game with a misfield off the first and then Trigger nips out Vince with a full one. Howell comes out to finish the game off with a shot but he gets one under his ribs from Trigger. However he can't stem the tide as he bowls a slow wide. Well and truly beaten here. Not enough runs and not enough control in the field I'm afraid. Not a great start but there is a long way to go.
I personally don't think Compo is a T20 man - no criticism of him tonight for the first part of his innings but he can't kick it on if he doesn't start that way. We needed Craig K tonight at the front end with Pete for if Marcus goes early. Alf had a 'mare' and can't bowl like that again and keep his place - Mark T did that a couple of times BUT he did take wickets! RvdM looks useful but Steve and Lewis need to tighten up - LG is no use at the end of an innings if we never get there and tonight they couldn't trust using him.
Pete was the star tonight though he won't get credit because he is on the losing side and an ex-England T20 player got about the same score. Some headaches for MT before Sunday I'm afraid...

So we have 2 overseas players (for first 8) both left arm spinners (although different styles)
Cant see any scenario wherre Max or George will ever play now, Arul also likely to be played ahead.
With Willow likely to be rested, Kirby with ankle issue and Hussain who's rarely played one day cricket personally i'd have much preferred a seamer of some kind.
Quite happy however to trust Mr Rose, he hasnt made many bad calls in his tenure as the big boss...

According to the clubs website Brian Rose has heard "good" reports about him,ive heard even better ones about Dockrell and Waller.

Surely no player should be signed unless Brian has SEEN (as opposed to heard) good things.
The only way I'd approve of this would be if we're going spin crazy in T20 and one of our young spinners still plays as one of 3 main spinners.

His career T20 economy rate is a whole 0.07 runs per over better than Max's. His strike rate is worse.

Hardly a `random signing`, Brother Of...., when we made an inquiry about him last year and have been following his career closely ever since.
In today's Independant Mr Rose said that he made an enquiry about him last season and has been following his career closely.He has been playing IPL so presumely Brian has seen him playing there this season.He is due to arrive in England tonight and it is hoped that he'll take part in a practice match between our bowlers and bartmen tomorrow.
Brian also sats that George Dockerell should be ready for first action in a couple weeks,but there is no mention of Craig's progress.
He also say "if we have to rest Kartik at some stage ,I would have no qualms about playing George instead"

If I were a young player at the club and had done well in the winter in the West Indies,captained the 2nds successfully and scored runs,travelled the country as 12th man for the 1st X1 and was a brilliant fielder and was then going to overlooked with the signing of a mercenary I'd be looking to find alternative employment.We have been led to believe that our youngsters would be given a chance but in my opinion this move stinks.

Mr Rose has made a lot of good signings but the list of not so good is growing and I include Cameron White in that although he is a good player.

Apparently Nannes wanted to play the whole T20 season and did not meet our criteria.
So you are going to condemn this bloke before he even turns over an arm or twirls a bat for us then, MB.
Could be a very good signing - and of course might not be. Don't forget his T20 record will include internationals, AG, while Max's won't. I've seen him bat and bowl for SA on TV and he looked pretty good to me.

I will expand on my remarks above and ask will he bring in more people paying on the gate, if the answer is probably not then I will say that the money spent on him could have been added to the profit we make this year. We have enough players available in my opinion unless there are several players not fit to play that we do not know about.
When making any decision the welfare of the club must be considered, I know there will be those who don’t agree with me on this but this is my opinion.

I would like to add this I am not sure which thread to put this on, it is about injuries.
On the test match program yesterday they were talking about Jimmy Anderson’s replacements they think he may be injured for several weeks, when we were discussing who will be picked for the t20 team it was mentioned that Steve Kirby may be rested, on the TV yesterday Steve was mentioned as a possible Anderson’s replacement that will also depend on if he is fit.

SP - the stats on cricinfo are separated out. T20 internationals are listed separately from other T20 games.

I don't think there's much doubt Mike that this player is highly unlikely to put extra bums on seats.
For one thing the way Brian describes him he sounds like a boring, Mike Yardy type slow bowler ie bowls darts rather than flighting it.
Now, as Brian says that style can be effective in T20 but I'd suggest it's a style that does nothing to excite.

I actually checked his record again, SP, and it is not clear whether the T20 international games which are listed separately are then also included in the generic T20 numbers.
What I can tell you is that IF they are included they would not have made his overall record worse because his T20I record is better than his generic T20 record.
Perhaps that is suggestive of a good big-match temperament.
However, I still cannot believe that he is so much better than George/Max so as to justify the wages.
I'd have kept the money and looked to use it to strengthen the CC squad for next season.

Mike in today's Independant Marcus reveals that Steve Kirby has an ankle injury which the club will need to monitor.
Point of order: Cricinfo's T20 stats do include T20Is, in exactly the same way that FC stats include tests and ListA stats include ODIs.

Will be interesting to see how KP goes this year. Seems to be a combination of being out of form and bowlers having worked him out has led to a poor IPL this year.
Not sure we needed a seamer, unless of the real explosive type. No reason why you can't use 3 spinners in a T20 team either.

I'm a little surprised at this news. I have seen him play a few times and I think his strength is certainly as a bowler - I can't remember too many runs. He will keep things tight hopefully and I can see him bowling well in tandem with MK. (if the latter has recovered in time!)

I am sure we all wish him well and he has a good time while he is with Somerset now we have signed him.
Somerset have a practice t20 match tomorrow at the CG, it will be interesting to see who will be playing, I wonder if the new signing Roelof will be playing he arrives in England this evening, I will try and find out the time of the match and pop over and have a look.
I'm not criticizing BR & I wish RvdM well, but it does seem a bit odd.
One wonders if Max has a future with SCCC, as if he isn't given the opportunities to show what he can do, he'll surely look elsewhere.
Can only surmise that BR/MT/AH don't have confidence in his abilities ?

Given they have just forked out on VDM I presume he's first in line despite Suppiah being a better bat and Kartik a better bowler (unless he's fed up with T20).
Maybe they want to put in as many people as possible with "big match" experience so we don't have a re-run of last year's mistake.

I supposed one way to look at it is that we may be creating a deep squad in the hope that we can rotate players, including the younger members of our side, through the T20 and give everyone the chance to show what they can do while maintaining an experienced and strong core for them to work with.

Frankly, I think the criteria about wanting someone to bat at six and bowl has been made up after the event. After all there is no doubt that we were trying to sign Dirk Nannes who would not have fitted that bill at all.

Well his Twitter on the M4 a couple of hours ago was upbeat so we have to hope he isn't coming here semi-crocked or something like that.

But, AG, I believe his inside leg measurement vs shoe size co-efficient is far superior to that of Max, George and even Joel Garner, while his Mum's milkman's hat size is one of the biggest in his district of Bloemfontein. BR says he also checked out his great-grandfather's uncle's star sign and the engine size / top speed ratio in his wife's hairdresser's old Austin Allegro.

I'm sure he'll do a steady job, SP. Not saying I expect him to be poor and go round the park.

Is there a danger of a law suit appearing sometime? If fans bought tickets with the promise of KP featuring, they might be really miffed? I can't remember what the advertising was like, but had always assumed KP would be here for the start of it.

I'm not sure why these debates get so heated. I was initially quite disappointed witah this signing, not because of his talents, but because I was looking forward to seeing GD who looks the real deal.

The quality of the cricket is inconsistent at best, the memory of most games lasts no longexr than a few days and it has no bearing or significance on the real stuff.
I would love SCCC to win every game they play but it's not going to happen and I don't care if we don't even qualify for the Finals Day if it means we are in with a chance of winning the CC going into the last game of the season.
Give Willoughby, Kirby, Hussain and even Trescothick a rest and stick some of the squad players in and maybe give Hildreth extra captaincy experience.

The only reason I think 20/20 is useful is if young kids get to watch some cricket and get the bug. I just hope they realise the longer form of the game is much more enriching - but the days/times/entertainment package that 20/20 provides will be the initial hook for families I guess.
All you need to do now is convince the managing bodies that is the role of T20 because I think they have forgotten that bit of the initial plan!

Really baffled by this. Not only do we not need another spinner, surely with Kirby's injury going with a seamer who bats would have been more sensible.

I'm not a 'spinner' for the club KT just as you are not always "anti Somerset" (or at least "anti Taunton").
I think you'll find if you check back a little way I have been against buying someone else in for quite some time.

I wouldn't play any seamers in T20. I'd stick with slow bowlers, with plenty of variation and have lots of batsmen and sprightly fielders, especially one at short ftm.

I'd play no specialist seamers that cannot bowl yorkers on demand, unless of course the track was a green top seamer.
Alf and Lewis Gregory are surely MUST plays for their yorkers. Then again, after his performances in the the T20 and 50 over World Cups, I thought Dockrell would be a MUST play too, but I'm now unsure whether we will see him.

The team I would play would show two changes from the team that I think they will play - Suppiah for Compton and Dockrell (or Waller) at number 11 in place of Dibble. I'm assuming it's not worth risking Kirby and Hussain will be considered too erratic for T20.

I agree with Grockle, from what I have seen of Dibble he's too much of a risk if someone's throwing the bat.

I want us to win the thing, admittedly not as much as the CC, but getting to finals day increases our revenue and profile. This can only be beneficial to the Club. I am sure the players will be up for it and good luck to them all.

Although my view is that Max should be looking elsewhere to continue his CC education, I am sure that he has a role to play in the one dayers and 20/20. I don't remember him being overwhelmed when being called upon to bowl in those circumstances, and IMO spinners (Left arm, off breaks or legspin) can be very effective in the shorter variety of game. Because they have to be attacked rather than played on merit as in 4 day game, they can be the best option very often. The faster bowler generally go faster to the boundary!. And anyway, given the opportunity Max might be able to show some of his batting prowess. But the best thing is that his fielding abilities will be second to none.

I did wonder why Somerset needed to sign him but now we have and after watching him in the nets, one thing I will say is he can certainly hits the ball hard.

My guess (and it's merely a guess) is that they'll leave out Kirby, Dibble and one of Compton, Suppiah or Meschede.

I've been away and have to admit that my reaction to this announcement was disappointment. Just because we are allowed to do something ( have a 2nd overseas player) doesn't mean we have to-and that I think goes for Pollard as well.

Success in the T20 in the last couple of seasons has actually created winning momentum that carried on into the following CC matches so I don't tend to look at Satan's cricket as a competition in isolation but all part of the bigger picture.

Kent have signed South African seamer Charl Langeveldt for the T20 tournament and are hoping he arrives in time to play against us at Tunbridge Wells on Friday.

Sorry. I think that is 20 odd runs short. The pitch seems two paced so there's something there but the bowlers will have to keep them in check to be in this one.

As for the bowling i think we bowled to much "length" which got smashed towards the leg side.

Think we'll get better, keiswetter will add some extra fire power, I'd also like to see Dockrell bowling when full fit. Two top spinners would be my preference.

I think you have a point Geordie. Before he would have had a month or more to get his length sorted on English wickets, he's now had a pretty ambiguous start to this summer with variable use in India and then he has to come here and get it right.

As I said the other day, I thought we knew a few months ago that Pollard was signed only for the second half of the T20 (rightly or wrongly) and that we'd at least be looking for another overseas player for the first 8 games (again, rightly or wrongly). I'm surprised that that seems to have come as a surprise to some...?

Pollard is in the West Indies one-day squad for their home series against India. 5th and last ODI at Sabina Park on 16th June.
Grockle - don't quote me but I believe he's back in the West Indies fold and playing in some sort of one-day series for them .. I think it's maybe against Pakistan?
He's in the Westindies ODI and T20 squad to play, I think, Pakistan this month.
Hope he gets some time at the wicket though he should with other people not about the squad. Windies players seem to be able to pick and choose what they do and don't play.
Went to the Rose Bowl last night. I think others have said it all already. I would add that for me, Hampshire simply wanted it more than we did. Impossible to quantify I know, but that was the feeling I got watching in the flesh - their players were really up for it and that particularly showed in the quality of their fielding.
Best thing about the evening was the beautiful sunset, I just wish I'd taken my camera.

One suspects that they see the T20 as a chance to kick-start their season, particularly as they will also have Imran Tahir available for the CC resumption.

Yes - Mascarenhas and Cork bowled very well and they certainly held their catches. I was expecting to see a very demoralised Hampshire side after the recent suggestions of "trouble in't dressing room", but nothing could have been further from the truth. Good communications in the field and lots of encouragement and geeing each other up. They deserved the victory, much to the enjoyment of the gloating Hants fans I went with, who were very pessimistic about their chances prior to the start.

Thommo and MK have been away a long time and RdvM is a completely new additon (Compo was on the mike and temporarily forgot his name at one point). He plays for the Titans, is that ZdB's side or Alf's?

I would contend that playing in the IPL has done Alf no good at all. He looked like a club bowler the other night.

Whilst we were well beaten by a good, fired up Hants it is the case that our prep was very short/non existent. A point made by Tres post-match and endorsed by Cork.
Our only T20 prep match was rained off and we did look a bit at sea in the field.
Lots of shots from Adams and Lumb fired thru' deep mid wicket - without the necessary cover didn't help either.

Somerset was going to have a warm-up match amongst them selves on Monday, it was rain off. Tuesday they had nets on the grass and fielding practise on the outfield.

Saw us batter them at Beckenham last season BUT we were 117 for 4 when Pollard was bowled by Bandara - so the game could have gone either way at that point - but then Jos came out and absolutely battered them.

Outclassed in all departments yesterday, so quick improvement is needed for the weekend games. CK will improve the batting if he is back and I'm sure Alfie will come on for the run.

Is it my imagination but it seems all the players coming back from IPL have not justified the hopes placed in them - noting also Murali at Gloucester.
Glos were absolutely hammered tonight, it was 106/0 after 10 overs! Murali only bowled 3 overs and went for 27!
AG - in the post match interviews Tres said, without making it an excuse, that because we had just finished a 4 day match and had our only T20 prep match rained off our prep was very poor (and that teams neede more time to prep). Corkie heard that and said that all prof sides needed time to prep for a change of format - I read that as endorsing what Tres had said.

There were four days available to prepare for that match and we decided to take two of them off for a bit of a break before launching our Twenty20 campaign.
In retrospect, that proved a mistake. The practice match we planned between ourselves at Taunton was rained off, so we only really had one day of preparation to face Hampshire and it wasn't enough.
You have to change your entire mental approach and technique for 20-over cricket, the batsmen setting aside all fear and looking to hit different areas with their shots and the bowlers having to adjust their lengths.
Hampshire had two practice games ahead of playing us and it showed. We were outplayed on the night and then got down to some serious practice ahead of the Kent match. That proved the platform for van der Merwe to show exactly why we signed him. His 89 off 51 balls, included six sixes and seven fours, demonstrated what a destructive hitter he can be in addition to his considerable bowling and fielding skills.

I wonder who decided for the players to have time off, I knew the practise match was called off because of the weather and the following day the day before the match against Hampshire all they had was nets even though the players weren’t travelling to Hampshire until the morning of the match.

What's done is done but I am more troubled by the notion that the reverse must also be true. Will we have enough practice time ahead of Edgbaston to get our practice in for the far, FAR more important game up there?
