A fortnight of Bears!

Beautiful Day

By Grockle
May 24 2010

It's Warwickshire for the next couple of weeks. A four day game down here this week, a T20 opener at Hove and then another four day game up in Birmingham. Wall to wall Bears! Consolidating our position is the name of the game this week. A second win after the run chase against Yorkshire would be just the ticket but Warwickshire are not going to lie down and play dead because we want them to!

v Warwickshire CC1 @ Taunton Monday 24 May 2010

Scorecard

Commentary (club version)

Jonesy's Live Blog

Kieswetter is off to see Cameron and Clegg so they can bask in his reflective glory so Nick Compton will sub for him on day 1 and if we field, Buttler will keep but only for the first day.  Therefore the 12 man squad is;

Trescothick, Suppiah, Compton (Kieswetter), de Bruyn, Hildreth, Buttler, Trego, Kartik, Phillips, Thomas, Willoughby

Day 1

Blistering hot day.  Marcus  wins the toss and chooses to field.  Surprising but the pitch does look green and he probably hopes for somthing.  Warwickshire are without Trott and Bell but they have had batting troubles up to this point.

There has been a distinct problem updating on any of the four day games in the pie We contonast month so I have a backlog of material to update which I hope to clear in the next few days.

However we are in a position at the end of this phase of the CC1 campaign for 2010 that is much better than we were after the first fortnight of the season.

Back to back wins against Warwickshire in short periods of time has pushed us up the table (along with the win that Rudolph of yorkshire kind of 'gifted' to us by declaring on a very gettable target.)

We now have go into the middle phase of the season when the only game in town is the 'love it or hate it' Twenty 20.

Welcome back to our old compadre Cameron White and welcome for the first time to Kieron Pollard who will both be joining the Somerset ranks for the short form competition.

We kicked off against Sussex at Hove and lost easily a very winnable game after doing most of the hard work.

We continue with a game at Lords against Middlesex on Wednesday which we ought to be looking at as a victory for us and then the home sessions start on Saturday with Surrey and go through the next fortnight at the rate of almost a game every two days.

No time to get anything down on this for Day 1 until after 4:00 I'm afraid.

The commentary and blog links are here however if anyone wants to try them. If they don't work then please let me know because I can't test them from here either.

The commentary went down, Sloop.

Was on for the first 50 odd minutes. During that time, it sounded like Warks were extremely fortunate indeed. Chopra was dropped and it sounded as though there were quite a few other nicks through the slips as well as some false shots against shorter balls.

Might be a long, hot day for the bowlers but, even if it is, I still think the decision to field first is the correct one (as is the decision to omit Compton, IMO). After all, the last captain to lose a CC game here after winning the toss and inserting would probably have been Rob Key two years ago. And his cause was hardly helped by the fact he had to leave the game to go off to a maternity ward during that game!

Let's hope Kartik can play a role in helping to dispose of the lower order without them managing too much of a recovery.

If we could get them for 230 or so, I'd be very happy with that. That would give us a chance to then bat aggressively with a view to getting a lead of 200 or so by lunch on day three. That would give us a chance to then try and get five or six wickets in the final two sessions of day three which would leave us needing "only," four or five in final day conditions which seem to regularly be very, very difficult for the bowlers to prosper in.

200 is not so much of a lead that we could be sure of not having to bat again, but I think the point is that we could surely knock off pretty much anything that we need to get in the final 50 overs or so of Day 4.

Tremendous morning's work by the bowlers and Alfonso in particular. I haven't been able to listen this morning, so can anyone watching or listening offer any insight into whether the wickets are due to great bowling, movement, pitch conditions, poor batting or (most likely) a combination of all of these things?

Hi Sid, in the hour or so I got before the commentary cut out, Warks made about 50 for 1.

They were very lucky to be only one down at that stage. Chopra was dropped and there were numerous other close things. It sounded like the warm weather was supporting movement through the air i.e. swing.

Damn; fantasy disaster for me and hardly the news that the real-life SCCC players were looking for either. Very good catch by the bowler, apparently. Curses.

Perhaps this game will be the ultimate proving ground of whether it's possible for a bowling team to get a result on Day Four here.. that's asssuming that the game does not end in three days!

Suffice to say that if the game gets to day four with the bowling side needing only 3 or 4 wickets to finish the game off and they don't get them.... well, I think we should probably all call for the Head Groundsman's head, if that happens...

Having now batted I s was surprised to see Compton come in - although I am sorry to have to say not surprised to see him go out- so assume he is CK's substitute from the team on cricinfo. Now what happens tomorrow when we are still batting and Craig arrives. Have we lost his innings or does he bat instead of Charl??? HELP

Yep - it might have been part of the deal that the sub for the player not getting back batted on day 1 but I personally don't understand why he had to come in so early.

It is presently really difficult to keep a solic internet connection in the commentary box because after providing a laptop for the first game it hasn't been seen since and wi fi there is really ropey (I've tried for the last couple of games and got nowhere).

As the game is going out on FM within the ground I get the feeling that the internet access has become slightly secondary and I'd like to get some feedback on it so I can go and put the case for the people living further away.

Are people getting the streamed commentary?

Is its presence patchy?

Now that the other BBC radio stations are providing more consistent commentary from away teams do you care whether there is a Somerset based presence?

Is the commentary worth it when you get it?

Your feedback will decide whether we keep involved in this. It's getting good feedback around the ground but that isn't why I got involved in the first place - it was the lack of external commentary on CC games for those NOT able to get to the ground.

Any comments gratefully recieved

I am one of those who enjoy the commentaries (via the internet), Grockle. I much prefer the Somerset-based commentaries, because of the local knowledge and local colour provided by the commentators - notably yourself, of course.

I am sure that LoL would say something similar. Indeed, he might well consider that it wasn't worth his while returning from his holiday in Africa in the event that Somerset-based commentaries were to come to an end - and those who decide these things wouldn't want to be responsible for that, would they.

Your pub quiz question about the first 12th man ever to score a hundred in championship cricket has already been answered, Old Boy. Sadly not by Nick Compton, though.

Kevin Innes was nominated by Sussex as substitute under ECB rules for a 2003 championship match against Nottinghamshire at Horsham, when James Kirtley received a late call into the England Test squad. Although Kirtley was almost immediately released by England, Innes was already batting when he arrived back at Horsham.

Innes scored 103 in a 600-plus Sussex total, but reverted to drinks duty the next day and was rarely seen in the Ist XI again.

The Warks guys are okay but it's good to hear from guys that are knowledgeable about our players.

Of course, it's also the case that games involving the likes of Hants and Lancs feature no commentary from the Beeb - for CC games, I mean.

Star of the show today has to be Thomas. He was truly fired up at Bath yesterday and so in some ways I'm not too surprised at how he excelled today. But this was magnificent bowling and I now dare hope he may be the strike bowler we have been searching for, and had in the side all along.

Fantastic too to see Willoughby returning to form. On his day Charl is a prize asset and hopefully we will see more of this in the second innings, and indeed for the return visit next week.

Trescothick seems a little out of form with the willow at present. In previous seasons this would have been a desperate worry, but it is testament to the vast strength of the top order this season that we can carry even Tres when he is a little off the boil with the bat.

Once again de Bruyn comes in and steadies the ship after an early wobble. That sort of thing can be the difference between a solid performance and the sort of thing that happened to the hapless Bears today.

Suppiah got a very well deserved ovation for his 50, a good total on what was clearly not the cricket-killing wicket some naturally assume will be standard issue for Day One at Taunton. Let's hope he can build on this in the morning. Without wishing to jinx him, it would be wonderful if he were to reach his century.

But what on earth is the matter with Compton? He got in the side when he had essentially already been dropped, and what does he do with the sort of "last chance" that almost no batsman gets? Loses his wicket for 4 after facing all of 15 balls. After today I have finally lost confidence in the man. All he had to do was still be batting at the close, not much of an ask for a supposed top order batsman, but apparently beyond someone who I now fear may be a dud.

Info from Sex compadres tends to be that he does it or he doesn't, there is little middle time with him.

I have had to limit the amount I will post today because I had so many photos that I liked.

The photo I haven’t posted was the one showing how green the pitch was, we were lucky to win the toss otherwise the boot could have been on the other foot.

One thing I will say is the umpires were out in the middle before the match started and one of the ground staff was doing something halfway down the pitch with something in a bucket that may have been soil or sand.

The view from the other side.

BBC Coventry and Warwickshire's Clive Eakin:

"Usually a first day at Taunton is an opportunity for batsmen to fill their boots. But such is the shortage of confidence in the Warwickshire batting line-up, that the Bears couldn't take advantage.

"Their cheap dismissal will have done nothing to quieten the increasingly loud concerns being expressed by Bears supporters. The top-order batsmen are really struggling and were cruelly exposed in the absence of Bell and Trott.

I really do enjoy the commentary. Not all visiting sides have their own BBC coverage and anyway as somebody else has said, I prefer a local view. Given all the trouble that has been taken to set the thing up it seems a real shame that the lack of a laptop has caused you and the rest of the team to go off air.

Grockle
24/05/2010 23:25
The laptop isn't an 'off air' issue Demon. Just access to the site and up to date info issue. I like to have some contact with people while on air.

I'm not sure about the internet delivery because I work up to the time I'm on and then have no foldback to show whether the signal is going out on the stream or not. Once we get into the second half of the summer I'll have a better handle on it.

I think the FM is fine but the streaming seems a little flakey. We were on until 6:15 today but it seems there may have been no internet feed for the whole of the Somerset innings!

Grockle,

As someone who lives a fair way from Taunton, I very much appreciate the commentary. Generally I've found it to be more reliable this season than last, although there are still occasional problems. I haven't had the opportunity of listening to the current broadcast yet but will be in virtual attendance today. Do you (or the ISP) have any statistics on how many internet listeners you get?

BVI Grockle
25/05/2010 09:49
I now share an office so it is more difficult to catch the commentary as much as I would like, but when I do I have to say that the connection is pretty good and I do like the commentary from our guys. It sure beats listening to some of the muppets from other counties who know nothing about the players on the field - how difficult is it to do a little research guys?

On the field, yesterday could not really have gone much better. Many people saying that the green pitch contributed but Nathan on his blog was saying that some of the shots played were pretty ordinary. Also, the fact that Trigger came on first change would seem to imply that it was movement through the air that was key rather than any demons in the pitch.

Big day ahead. Hopefully the sun is shining on Taunton, as it is in Jersey this morning, and we can post a very large total (perhaps with more big contributions from our excellent 'engine room' of DeB, Hildy, Jos and Trigger).

It has been this game

Now that the other BBC radio stations are providing more consistent commentary from away teams do you care whether there is a Somerset based presence?

Yes, without question, and I would always listen to it by default. I don't like a partisan commentary, but I like a Somerset perspective and your commentary provides a nice balance.

Is the commentary worth it when you get it?

Yes, and improves every time. Certainly a lot better than last season in terms of the performance of the commentators.

You're describing me, in long term exile in Lancashire. The coverage is informed, reassuringly 'enthusiast' rather than BBC 'neutral' and much appreciated. The streaming is fine this morning, with a few very short breaks (or is it my broadband coverage?)

I believe that the correct approach to this game is to try to hit 350 (or 400 if we really must) as quickly as humanly possible and then start bowling.

To be clear, I think the absolute priority on our pitch that tends to get flatter with each passing day, is to be bowling again as soon as possible.

I don't really care how many we need to get, batting last on the final day. Whatever it is, there is surely a strong chance that we will get them?

Conversely, if we have to take any significant number of wickets on the final day, then that might be a problem.

So whilst convention, on most tracks, might say that we should aim to bat for another five sessions before we get them back in, I would like to be bowling again at some point today - ideally a good hour or so before the close. Hopefully, we could then bowl them out before the end of Day Three leaving us to do nothing more than a bit of batting on the final day.

If, on the other hand, we press on to 500 and don't start bowling until an hour after lunch on Wednesday, then it's entirely possible that we might need to take 5 or 6 wickets to finish the job on the final day. And recent history is absolutely stacked against the bowling side on day four at Taunton. Yes, they are minus Trott and Bell and short on form and confidence with the bat, but still...

Fair do's - a very good Warwickshire effort. I reckon between them our batters played and missed outswingers at least 30 times. Appealing was a bit co-ordinated but in vast majority of times 'trying it on'. Also never seen it before - Maddy appeals for LBW against Phillips - Umpire Benson says OUT then when Phillips looks aghast - obviously nicked it - changed to NOT OUT - fair do's for reversing honest mistake IN THE HEAT no doubt!

But I'm going to get my wish about us getting plenty of bowling time on day two.

The commentators are bemoaning the fact that we might not make 300, but I don't care. The priority is to win this game and that is best served by starting bowling whilst there is still some support from the conditions, be they overhead ones or some life in the pitch.

Maybe Troughton could copy his actor brother Sam, who after playing Romeo for the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday night, went down into the audience with a bucket to collect money for the theatre`s redevelopment programme.

He raised £1,200. Perhaps we could all contribute to Jim Troughton if he doesn`t bat too long tomorrow.

Well well, finally FINALLY a match defined by our success with the ball. How often in recent times have our seamers knocked over the opposition at HQ.

So much for Kartik and the Mendip loam; clearly the tactic is to produce an extremely green strip (it looks no different than the rest of the square!) and hope we get to bowl first.

I wonder if the change in groundstaff was related to the need to "green up" the tracks, certainly it has worked.

As has been noted it turns conventional wisdom on its head by inserting the opposition, But I've never understood the bat first bias anyway. It my school first X1, strong in batting but moderate in bowling we always used to bat second, much to the fury of the cricket master because we knew if we couldn't win, the worst that could happen is we'd bat out the draw and stay unbeaten.

If the Taunton pitch just won't break up we may need to go for the grass option which will no doubt make messrs Willoughby, Thomas and Phillips very happy.

How long ago was it that we had a bowling attack that we could confidently expect to take 20 wickets?

"Jos Buttler ct Ambrose bld Maddy, if you look at the other scores in the innings he did OK."

First, thanks as always for the fine pics, Mike.

Second, and to echo Jim's point above;

% of a team's runs scored is, in my view, probably the best way, over time, of assessing a batsman's true quality*. And any innings, in a low-scoring match, which is, by far, the largest of the match is something that always particularly impresses me. On the basis of the scorecard alone, I would suggest that this might have been Hildreth's best innings for SCCC.

* Yes, objections may be raised to this method on the basis that "All his team-mates were rubbish," or some such but, to be honest, I don't think there have been very many teams to whom this could be said to have applied over any significant period of time because rubbish players have a habit of failign and then not getting picked again. Moreover, even if this objection is valid, then that means that the guy making disproportionate scores has been making them under consistent pressure, due to the lack of quality around him.

It was, of course, an innings of this type which, ultimately, set Marcus on the way to his international career.

And I would suggest that when Marcus did something similar (albeit a huge score compared to all of his team-mates, as opposed to compared to all of the batsmen in the match) vs Murali at Galle, early in his Test career, that was probably the moment when Duncan Fletcher knew, and everybody else accepted that his hunch was right.

I get the impression that the ball has moved through the air on the first two days, though, GM?

It might be that the lack of warmth might not be a good thing, in that regard.

I would think that Marcus will try to play pressure cricket, with Kartik bowling almost throughout from one end to deny them any chance of getting a goodish lead quickly. Certainly, I think that would be the right approach to take with so many of their batsmen having been short of form and, one assumes, confidence.

Hildreth went in at no.4 for the first two County Championship matches and if I'm right he came in at no.5 against Essex because he had to go to hospital for treatment to an injury in one of those farcical warm ups. Most batters have their favourite position in the batting order. I always liked no.5 because by then I knew what kind of innings was required of me. Perhaps our hero feels more comfortable at no.5 - and Zander is doing a reasonable job at no.4.

For just four balls today, we may well have seen the shape of Somerset`s batting line-up for next week`s championship match at Edgbaston - and beyond.

When Tresco was out with just two runs needed to win, Jos Buttler came in at No.3, He didn`t face a ball, but I have a feeling this will be the championship format for the immediate future, with Craig K batting at No.6, his position last year.

Buttler batted at the top of the order for King`s College and England Under-19s last year, and in the longer form of the game it doesn`t seem sensible to ask Craig to go in at first drop after concentrating hard for long periods with the gloves.

But if Brian really said that "Compton will be back at 3," does that not imply that he is going to be picked?

It would be very disappointing if Jos has to make way for him. There will be nothing, in my view, to be gained by returning JOs to the relatively poorer standard of Second XI cricket. He's clearly a good prospect and if we want him to go on improving, as we surely should, then he needs to continue to play against players of a standard that will really challenge him.

I hope that Rose only meant that Compton will play three when one of Craig and Jos is unavailable.

AGod
27/05/2010 10:52
According to those (on our side) that played on it, the defining characteristic of this pitch that we just played on was that it was quite bouncy and retained its bounce throughout. I'd guess that was probably down to leaving extra grass on the track?

During dry weather, then I suppose one can leave extra grass on the track without worrying about it being a "whomever wins the toss wins the game," type of situation. Had there been more rain around in the run-up to the game, we would surely have been taking that kind of gamble, if we'd left lots of grass on the track?

It was reported in some quarters that we'd possibly taken this kind of gamble in this game. Of note, however, is that Ashley Giles said they would definitely have batted first, had they won the toss. Had the pitch been both well-grassed and damp, then I'm sure Giles would not have said that.

It was I that said about the grassy pitch and the toss was a gamble, I even thought it may have been the reason for the loss of wickets.

I am no expert on these matters and am willing to change my mind by hearing other views on it.

After reading Warwickshire own report on there first innings that stated it was bad batting and Sky’s report on their second inning yesterday that said a similar thing.

So reading the reports I was wrong it was more to do with bad batting and not the pitch.

Confidence is, arguably, more important in batting in cricket than in any other discipline in any other sport and, at the moment, they do not have any.

Well, CJM, I know they have had some tribulations but I would have thought that Durham still have a good enough attack to cause plenty of problems for Warks, given that they will be minus Trott and Bell again.

I'd guess Warks will prepare a slow turner, if at all possible to try to blunt the Durham pacemen and hope for a Tahir inspired win or a dull draw. IDB is out so not sure what spin, if any, Durham will be able to deploy.

The 260-odd that SCCC bowled Warks out for at Edgabston last year was by far their lowest home total of the 2009 season so I'd suggest that if Durham bowl them out fo anything around that 260 mark in their first dig, then the result will be an away win.

This must be the best Somerset win for, well at least a couple of seasons. We actually took 20 wickets! Willo, Phillips and Thomas dominated from the off and what an innings by James Hildreth. It really could have turned our season around.

It also may be, as Roy Kerslake suggested the first fruits of our pitch policy. Leaving it so green was probably a bit of a gamble, but the grip for Kartik and the dust seen towards the end is encouraging too.

I suspect though the real test of the team and the pitch will come against opposition more testing than Warks.

Warwickshire leg-spinner Imran Tahir returned his best-ever bowling figures in the UK - 8-114 - against Durham at Edgbaston today, and one of the other two wickets went to a spinner as well.

So it must be odds on that we are going to discover a turning wicket when we arrive to play the return championship match on Friday.

I wonder if we will select a second spiner alongside Murali Kartik, or will we rely on Arul?

I thought Tahir bowled very well against us without any luck. I am not surprised at his success - been around various counties and countries as sort of nomad for a long time. Has beautiful controlled action, good role model for our own leggies - I would have thought from Pakistan's point of view they must have some other very very good spinners not to be using him.

Tahir is no longer available to Pakistan, OB, as he is qualifying by residence for South Africa.

They picked him for the final Test against England during the winter, but found that his residential qualification actually occurred during the five-day match whereas the rules say it must be on the first day.

I merely point out that it's rather sad that ON A SUPPORTERS SITE, even a really solid victory is seen as a cue for SNIPING at the team we supposedly all support, and that some seem far more concerned with proving their own cleverness and kinship with Vic Mark than with supporting their team.

Please don't take Botham's posting for effect seriously FE.

You are not in the minority here despite the posts of some who think they speak for a larger number than they actually do.

You are right to state that this is a supporters site, I also wonder about some statements made at times but many have more to do with personal ego than any kind of personal conviction.

The loss of long term posters who make thoughtful and studied contributions is something a supporters site can't afford to allow without some comment and I hope you'll re-consider after some thought.

The post you refer to is certainly not worth taking offence over but I can understand why you may see it as the thin end of the wedge. I respect whatever decision you make but you will be sorely missed if this is your last post.

Interesting comments you make Grockle.

I don't know about anyone else but I do appreciate the wide variety of opinions expressed on your site.

I don't agree with some of them, and of course many views expressed are clearly tongue-in-cheek.

My own position is that I take great pride when our players perform well, and in particular when there is a fairly local connection.

I have never believed that a 'win-at-all-costs' mentality is necessarily the best way to play cricket - however I appreciate that there are some views which clearly promote that outcome.

The current team has, possibly, one of the strongest batting line ups for several years - say since the Viv and Both days.

However the bowling, and the way that they are used, does give me some concerns.

My sincere hope and dream is that Somerset will win the big prize - the 4 day championship - while I am still sane enough to appreciate it!

I felt like that last year after a pretty frank exchange of views re a subject that shall not be mentioned.

The undoubted passion we all feel for the Club sometimes boils over on this site into an uneasy & potent mixture of wit, optimism, pessismism, sarcasm, ego, humour and anger, linked no doubt to the moods of the individual poster(s) at the time the keyboard is pressed !

I personally didn't read Both's post as a vitriolic one, (nor did I read it as especially being directed at FE), more perhaps a reference to rule one.

Anyway, hope to see a 'plethora of pithy postings' from you again soon FE !

I think if Both's posting is as spiky as it gets than we can say the discourse is, overall, a gentlemanly one.

Opinions, however controversial must expect to have pushback and indeed this board would be extremely dull without the contributions of FE and others.

Is it a tad rich for Grockle to cite others for carping after rather negative posts about the Bath game? And what about his views on Brian Rose?

It's important I feel for everyone to express their opinions, within reasonable boundaries and for this to be a forum for lively debate.

I do not feel that to criticise the club or the players is somehow patriotic, or that we must somehow act as "boosters" for the team. As a supporter I am behind my team but not uncritically so.

Everyone should have the right to have their opinions without the sincerity of their support for Somerset called into question.

I think the word 'repetitive' was related quite closely to my comments on 'carping' KT. Maybe I've been critical of Bath for years and haven't even noticed - it can get you like that I've heard

Well, anyway, back to your regularly scheduled programme;

The second half of the fortnight of Bears may very well involve bowling at an even more demoralised batting line-up than the one that Kartik ran through at Taunton.

We have not won three CC1 games in a row since we gained promotion back to the top flight. And, weather permitting (some showers seem to be in the forecast) we will surely never get a better chance to put up three in a row?

As you say AG.

It looks hopeful, especially if we get a game tonight AND win it. Warwickshire look in deep do do in terms of willow work one has to say, The 'King' must be pulling his hair out.

We've been there in the past, there is little you can do when the morale is rock bottom but keep pushing until either results turn or the season ends and you can build again.

I'm actually considering going up for one day because I feel we are on a run here and I'd like to see it continue until the break so we have something to push on from after the short stuff is done and gone.

To answer CJM's question about the status of Tim Ambrose for this match, I think we can safely say that we will not see Mr Ambrose at Edgbaston.

As my witness in-chief, I call the King of Spain;

"At the moment, I don't think we can say when Ambrose will play for the first team again."

Reading between the lines of the other stuff Giles said about him, it seems that being dropped from the Test team has been a real body-blow to Ambrose from a psychological point of view and, I would suggest, the current concerns of the Warks' management are that motivation in County cricket has become something of an issue for Ambrose i.e. that he's struggling to motivate himself, given that he cannot currently see anyway back into Test contention.

Giles said that;

"We need to work for him and get him back to the point when he enjoys his cricket."

From what I have heard this morning, it sounds to me like a painfully slow pitch where the ball nibbles around off the seam and where there may be a suggestion of uneven bounce.

Afternoon all from a very warm Edgbaston. It was baking this morning in the cloudless conditions but has cooled down a bit now with a bit of cloud cover.

The ball appears to be moving about a bit and people should not underestimate just how good Trescothick's innings was under the circumstances. Suppiah scored a derisory amount BUT did not lose his wicket at a time when a collapse could have occurred. He also sustained a pretty nasty blow to the head when seemingly edging a ball with his helmet, which had to be replaced.

Hildreth is looking much more the player we all know he can be. He is the only one other than Trescothick who has looked at all comfortable out there.

Jos was looking OK until being caught, but isn't that often the way with batsmen? Disappointing it happened just before lunch.

Overall not the best start I've seen but it really could be so much worse.

Hildreth is playing some excellent shots and you can't argue with either his score or how long it has taken him to get it. The Hildreth batting cat has however used up several of its 9 lives with a number of near misses on the catching front and one occasion where he stormed down the wicket and missed completely. As I type he has lost his ninth life and been caught

A very disappointing day, but you have to assume the pitch is difficult to bat on or else Marcus is too positive for his own good.
How long is it going to take before we are able to bat consistently as a unit.

I`ve consistently said that we`re not as strong as we were last year and that is being borne out.
From being really strong last year we`re now just average in all areas.
Have to hope the pitch remains the same and that we bowl substantially better than we appear to have batted.

We need more than cameos we need substance or else we`ll keep missing out on vital bonus points.

I really hope the pitch gets worse before it gets better.

The pitch is obviously not easy.

To my mind, an important consideration is that we were probably lucky to score as many as we did. Tresco was dropped on 32 and Hildreth on not many.

Warks are in NIGHTMARE batting form and we could run through them again.

Worst case scenario, IMO, will be that they will score almost exactly the same total that we did.

But seriously, not only did we get lucky with dropped catches, but it sounded like the ball beat the bat regularly, too. Certainly, Arul had a torrid time against the new ball.

When the ball beats the bat very regularly but the edge is seldom taken, that is usually, IMO, indicative of the fact that the bowling side bowled half a yard too short. Either that or there was so much movement out there that it would have taken Tendulkar at his very best to get a nick on many of those balls.

I`m delighted that we`ve responded in the way that we had to today and it`s obviously a very difficult pitch to bat on. Generally this year the bowlers have done a reasonable job and there is really little to complain about from them all year.

The depth of the bowling is another question which I won`t go into here suffice to say it has more depth than the batting even if that depth could be deeper.

The batting although it looks stronger on paper has struggled all season with some isolated exceptions and shows no sign of any improved upward consistency.

Almost all of the first 20 wickets in this match fell to catches.

Now, all of a sudden we have a rash of LBWs and one guy getting bowled, with zero catches out of four wickets down in our 2nd dig.

We probably do need somebody to get a 50 in this 2nd innings to make sure we get far enough ahead to deny them real hope.

This is just the sort of situation where Bradman would have declared about now, Jim. Unless he thought that conditions for batting would get even worse!! Not so easy as I thought.

Yes, AG, a fifty would come in very handy. I should have thought we would want a bowl this evening - perhaps a longer bowl than yesterday evening, but not too long to take all the shine off the ball.

AGod
05/06/2010 17:04
And given the fact that there all these shooters out there, I'd like to suggest that Marcus should give Zander De Bruyn a bowl in the 2nd innings, as he bowls very much wicket to wicket. And Mr Trego to have a bowl would also be an idea, on the same basis, IMO.

Since the end of our first innings, the highest score that any single player has mustered is 27 - a score which two Warks' players, Troughton and Chopra mustered.

If each wicket averages 27 in the Warks' 2nd dig that would mean they would total 270.

Another thing which points to a total of 141 in our 2nd dig being what we need to totally put the game out of reach for them.

Hearing some of the commentary seems that Warwickshire may have been bowling with hand-grenades which were exploding on the wicket.

It's this simple; forget about conventional bowling, by which I mean bowling "in the corridor of uncertainty," and looking for nicks.

Too late for the heavy roller, OBA - even at midnight.

Useful in flattening a worn wicket for the start of the next innings, if there is any under-surface moisture around.

But once a dry wicket is breaking up the extent that Edgbaston is, then the heavy roller only makes it worse. Its very weight widens the cracks rather than binding them together.

Big Jim

05/06/2010 21:13
Hold on, so what's wrong with batsmen not having it all their own way as has been the case in recent seasons?

Mike, I think you're right there has been a change in approach this season, with the heavy roller ban and possibly a more permissive approach when it comes to pitches.

Why have they done it? Because steadily rising scores and a lack of positive results, not least at Taunton where resulting in result - free unbalanced cricket.

The scores in this game wouldn't have been unusual 20/30 years ago. These days, players are used to ultra flat shirtfronts where batters can fill their boots as a matter of course.

Anything more challenging and it's shock horror! I think we had the same debate at Bath; one of the features of the game is a variety of playing conditions which test out the skills of the players. Makes it more interesting.

And of course it helps teams like ours where,as somebody noted on the site, batting skills are more of a premium rather than the ability to take wickets on flat pitches which we've struggled at.

I wonder what players like Merv Kitchen, Brian Close and Peter Wight who had to survive on all sorts of 'sporting surfaces' at Weston, Bath and elsewhere would make of all this?

AGod
05/06/2010 21:14
It's certainly an encouraging start though I'm sure you'll understand if I say I was more encouraged with what he did vs this lot at Taunton than on this current track.

We have to accept that Warks are badly weakened by the absence of Trott and Bell and are in a terrible run of form. However, those caveats notwithstanding, we can still compare Kartik's figures with those of our other bowlers (who are of course bowling on the same pitch vs the same opponent.) Such a comparison does suggest that he might be our most penetrative bowler which is, of course, what we would want from our overseas signing.

Overall, I'm encouraged that he seems to be more penetrative than I expected. I anticpated exemplary control but feared that he might not bring much extra penetration compared to the likes of Charl or Alf.

If Murali can take anything like the number of wickets vs stronger batting line-ups that he has taken in these two games vs Warks, then we might be able to challenge for the title. It also has to be said that he seems to be an asset in the slip cordon, too.

Big Jim
05/06/2010 21:29
You miss the point,KT.
We all want a fair balance between bat and ball, not heavily weighted in either direction.
I'm glad you now agree that the heavy roller option was a good one,you weren't convinced during the pre-season.
County Championship cricket is the proving ground for Test matches.
This sort of pitch doesn't do that, likewise a pitch which offers the bowlers nothing is as much at fault.
The bounce seemed to be the biggest problem today,a shooter followed by a lifter.
What good does that do?
Apart from enhance the wicket taking stats of the bowlers.
Balance is the key.

This pitch sounds lethal. The ball is rearing at the batsmen off a length. I'm starting to wonder if there might be some sort of chance of this one being abandoned? It sounds dangerous out there. Apparently, Westwood got a lethal throat ball from Willow last night and Alf has already inflicted severe pain on Troughton with balls exploding off a length into his hands.

One wonders what might have happened in this game, if either side had an express bowler playing...

At the very least, I wonder if Warks might get some kind of penalty for this track..

I have commented elsewhere but presumably the men in top hats and tails will, at this very moment be catching the night train from Lords - scrutinizing the wicket prepared (or even not prepared for this match) and handing out some pretty hefty fines.

SURELY you can't play TEST cricket on a wicket like that - so I would think Edgbaston should lose it's TEST MATCH status, and it be transferred to a decent wicket - like BR's at Taunton?.

A quote from cricinfo.

But the loss of 17 wickets in a single day tells its own story. This is a not a good pitch. The bounce is irregular - with some balls rearing and a few beginning to scuttle - rendering it an unequal battle between bat and ball. It was something of a surprise when the umpires declared themselves content with the pitch and ruled out a call to the pitch inspector.

One odd thing is that the Warks players are nowhere to be seen. The Somerset chaps were on the outfield when we arrived at 0930, but I've only seen a couple of the Warks boys all morning and then only briefly.

The same is true of the supporters, where Somerset are very well represented in an understandably poor turnout.

In any event, I would want to come along to see which Warks players are prepared to really fight tooth and claw today and which roll over.

The CEEFAX weather reports section, based on the latest reports that were at 1000 hours, does not show much widespread rain across UK towns and cities. Instead, there's the odd place, such as York, that is apparently getting a deluge and it now shows drizzle in Manchester and in Lincoln.

I don't think there is anywhere south of Lincoln on their list of places where it was raining at 1000 hours, though.

Having said that, the same report claims it was sunny in London at 1000 hours. This is certainly not true in West London, so I wonder where they get their readings from.

This seems to be one of those matches where our bowling doesn't look that threatening, and then a wicket suddenly falls, as Maddy has just discovered. There have been a few more appeals than usual though.

One added incentive to get this match over with quickly is someone is playing bagpipes within earshot of the ground. I don't particularly dislike them, but we have had over an hour of them now!

I can't help contrast the negativity when we encounter a bowler friendly pitch against the outrage expressed by some when someone criticises flat tracks, often at Taunton.

Balance is indeed key, which is why the occasional bowler friendly track is needed to balance out the high scoring flat pitches.

Ideally every individual wicket would be offer equal help to batsman and bowler, however balance over the course of a season is reasonable and it makes the game interesting.

And of course these pitches favour sides like our own where skilled batting in adverse circumstances is higher value than the ability to take wickets on flat strips.

We won on a bowler friendly track at Taunton last week and we're on course here.

For a side like us, flat tracks are not what's required so we shouldn't complain.!

Re rain, the clouds now have quite a bit of grey in them and there is now complete coverage. The temperature has dropped and rain certainly feels in the air. I'm not a meteorologist, but my guess is if we do get a shower it won't last that long, and there is brighter news in the direction the weather is coming from.

In other brighter news, Chopra is out!

Yes AG, and sadly I must refer you to my earlier caveat that I am not a meteorologist! Now raining very hard indeed. The tops of the tower blocks in the direction the weather is coming from are in the raincloud so it is very low. Water is now collecting on the tops of the covers. I'll be amazed if there is any further play today, but let's hope I'm wrong again! And to think not long ago I was genuinely worried about sunburn...

Weather update at 1630hrs from the Eric Hollies Stand, Edgbaston:

It has been raining hard and without interruption for an hour. There are pools of water several feet wide at the edges of the covers. A brighter patch should be here soon but the cloud is moving very slowly indeed. There is a further, larger brighter patch on the horizon too, but with a wide band of raincloud in between. Whether that second brighter weather will arrive in time to dry the outfield and allow play is debateable, but it could do.

Next update at 1700hrs or when it stops raining, whichever is the earlier.

Well forecast for tomorrow is for rain to sweep in from the South West, so I don't think there'd be any play at all in TA1 tomorrow, but we must hope for 90-120 minutes or so before the rain arrives in Birmingham.

They're saying rain by dawn in the South West.

So you guys down near Taunton will have a good idea of what the prospects of play are, before the rest of us.

If it doesn't actually start raining in Taunton until, say, 9:30 or so, we will probably get most of the morning session in at Edgbaston.

If it's raining at dawn in Taunton, then I think we'll be stuffed.

Thanks, Padded Up. In theory, I think we could claim the extra 30 mins.

If we take one wicket in whatever scheduled play is left (if we can get back on) then you'd have to think we would then claim the extra 30 mins - which might translate to 8 or 9 overs in the search for the final 3 wickets.

I'm praying we get back on for an hour and can wrap this up.

There are only 10 overs available, though, unless we claim the extra 30 minutes, in which case it might be more like 18.

Probably not realistic to expect to win this tonight, but I seriously hope we can get 2 of the 4 remaining wickets, which might mean we will only need to get on for 35-40 minutes tomorrow, in order to seal the deal.

A damp ball might be bad news for Kartik. On the other hand, their batsmen must start again and the pitch might well have sweated under the covers...

My phone battery cut out after my last update (thank goodness for that you all cried!) but here are a few bits on the last few overs of play you may not have picked up from elsewhere.

It was a very good show by the chaps, and not as easy as the speed of fall of wickets may have suggested. The outfield was very wet, with splashes of water coming up as the ball bounced along to the boundary. There were a few occasions where fielders were slip sliding around. The ball had to be dried off pretty much between every delivery. Kartik went for a couple of fours in succession and I was worried the ball might be too greasy in his hands and he would have to come off. Next ball, wicket, so even more credit to him for succeeding.

There were probably no more than about 50 watching those last few overs, which was a shame. But we were treated to some great bowling and superb captaincy by Trescothick, who didn't necessarily make the obvious decisions, but clearly did make the right ones.

And yes, I did get to hear the Blackbird victory song again this season, which always cheers me up!

The widespread and authentic knowledge of my fellow correspondents on this forum leads me to ask this question again.

What criteria do the umpires use to determine whether a pitch is up to standard and does not warrant a fine or other punishment (lost points etc)?. We know about the 16 wickets in a day but that is clearly not mandatory.

If it gets to Lords on what basis do they make a decision?

My point is: if Somerset had been on the receiving of this dreadful wicket (ie: lost the toss) could they have complained to Lords?

I just wonder whether all this is laid down in the rules somewhere.

Thanks, Padded Up, for all your updates.

It sounds to me as though the umpires did rather well to have play resumed so rapidly, given the situation with the amount of water on the outfield.

Mike TA1
07/06/2010 09:51
My understanding was if lot of wickets fall on the first day the umpires decides if it was - good bowling – bad batting- conditions - a bad pitch.

If they decide it was a bad pitch it is reported and the pitch inspector is called in.

It sounds simple but have their instructions been changed?

I wonder if a match could be abandoned if the pitch is deemed dangerous rather than bad?

I seem to remember Padded up commenting that players were being hit both on the head and hands repeatedly. How many times do they need to be hit for the umpires to come to that conclusion?

Too many pitches like that and a player could get seriously hurt.Big decisions for umpires.

old boy!
07/06/2010 12:07
Perhaps it would be helpful if WCCC would tell us what instructions had been given to the Head Groundsman before the match? Or was he left to dangle alone in the wind if the rumours we heard before are correct that they would make sure it was a 'result' wicket? We're not complaining of course because Tres won the toss which probably trumped their ace.

Remember he had no time to work on it the day before because that same pitch was use for a one day match.

The question should be asked who decided to do that, was it the Head Groundsman or his boss. unless we know the answer nobody can point the finger at anybody.

In International cricket they still use the heavy roller, why?
If a game goes for 4 days to end in a draw whats the difference in a 5 day draw?

The players that are playing with the different rules for pitches for C.C. will find it difficult to adjust should they ever have the opportunity to play Test cricket.

Is there another sport that has different regulations for domestic and International levels concerning the surface they play on?

"The question should be asked who decided to do that, was it the Head Groundsman or his boss. unless we know the answer nobody can point the finger at anybody."

It's certainly safe to say that we can point the finger at Warks, rather than Somerset, though.

I think it's pretty obvious that they were totally desperate for a win and were prepared to gamble on the fact that, if they won the toss, Tahir would have done better than Kartik and, batting first, Warks would have won the game.

In the event, I suspect the game would have been quite close, had Warks batted first, but I think there's a fair chance they would still have lost as they were badly outclassed over the two games.

Now, for us to challenge for the Title in the second-half of the CC, we have to show that we can beat somebody other than Warks in a non-declaration game. Kartik's figures are stupendous at the moment, with an average of something like 13. If he could average 26 in the second half of the season, whilst taking maybe 40 wickets in the final 8 games, then that should give us a chance to be a real threat.

Of course, we also need to keep Charl, Alf and Ben fit and firing too, as there is not a lot of proven pace bowling depth behind them ( I still miss Jonah). At the moment, with those four leading the attack, we have enviable accuracy with Alf arguably being the least accurate of our four lead bowlers. And Alf is not inaccurate.

If we suffer injuries and have to resort to the likes of Turner and Stiff, then Kartik's job would be that much tougher.

Talking of back-up bowling, David Stiff looked most impressive in the ECB Second XI 40-over quarter-final against Warwickshire at Taunton today - and with the new experimental pink ball into the bargain.

He took two for very few, possibly less than 12 or 15, in his seven overs before the rains intervened, and was both hostile and accurate. Adam Dibble also took a wicket with his first ball and looked very tidy, but Mark Turner sprayed it all over the place, conceding six wides in his first over.

When the leggies came on, Max Waller took two wickets in two balls, while Michael Munday also took two, including the experienced Duggie Brown.

Warwick were 60-7 at the 20-over break - each side bats for 20/20/20/20 - and Somerset were 75-2 in 14 when bad light was followed by heavy rain.

The above picture notwithstanding I was impressed by the close fielding to Kartik. No good having the bowler if the edges and bat/pads go down and they didn't. The pitch was a minefield. No one can bat against balls rearing ridiculous heights of a length and if I can be controversial I reckon the foundation for the win was laid by Suppiah in the first innings. WE could have been 3 or 4 down by 12.00 on Day 1 instead we had a opening partnership of 50. He will never score 2 more valuable runs.

I saw one newspaper report which said that when Suppiah was eventually out for two in that first innings, he was `put out of his misery`.

As you say, GM, there was nothing whatsover miserable about an innings that was vital to our success over the three days - and was hailed as such by both Tresco and Andy Hurry.

Not possible to know what would have happened had Arul been out rapidly in the first innings. We might have collapsed in a heap but, equally, we might have ticked along at a better rate earlier, and ended with a higher total. It does not seem to me to be unreasonable to suppose that that shocking pitch was probably at its best for batting right at the start of the game - after all, Marcus did elect to bat first.

Nevertheless, there can be no critisicm of Arul since I'm sure he was fighting tooth and claw to stay in - what else should we expect an opener to do?

I've tried to catch up on all the postings made during my enforced absence from the site, but have decided that perusing 424 postings on this particular thread would not be the best use of my time.

Obviously I am delighted that we beat Warwickshire so convincingly in consecutive matches and apologise if somebody has already commented on the fact that in both matches six of our first seven batsmen were education in the county they were representing, a statistic that only Yorkshire of the other seventeen counties comes remotely near to emulating. And there are a few other local lads just waiting their chance to play with the big boys...

But are you going to make another overseas sortie, just in case your absence from these shores was the decisive factor in us winning our first two non-declaration games for quite some time?*

I'm sure Brian Rose would say that Kartik was a key factor and, in the first game especially, Hildreth's batting, but he may be wrong...

*Clearly, if you are you've got three weeks or so to plan your trip during the Hit and Giggle interlude.
