Well Mr Wright is in the county but will he be wearing whites for us tomorrow in Yorkshire? Possible hamstring injury may make him doubtful. Will that open the door for the much vaunted Munday or the pace of David Stiff? We're off and running as of 11am people. The 2010 Championship campaign gets underway and Trescothick's team have to be ready for it.
v Yorkshire CC1 @ Headingley Carneigie Thursday April 15 2010
The era of Emporer Trescothick begins in earnest with the first Championship outing of the new Somerset. His international spinner Murali Karthik is not yet available but his possible England wicketkeeper batsman Craig Kieswetter is. We will have to wait in Grocklesland for the presence of "Grocklee 2010" Jos Buttler in the side a little while longer.
According to the official site the top seven pick themselves. Great news no doubt for newbie Nick Compton who will follow his skipper and Arul Suppiah to the crease at number 3. James Hildreth, Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego will be there and we welcome back the newly "Anglicised" Zander de Bruyn to the only county he could truly be in with a first name beginning with "Z"! He and Hilda will be tussling for who comes in at number 4 - you have to assume it depends on the fall of wickets before them as to who wins.
Our other two new Englishman, Vice captain Alf Thomas (It has to be shortened from Alfonso surely!) and Charl Willoughby seem to be certain to be the first two pacemen on the sheet but will they be joined by our temporary replacement for the absent "Murali". Damien Wright wants to be out there tomorrow - Headingley is the place he returned his best figures - but there is a bit of a hamstring scare that may put paid to his chances of starting for us...not a great situation for a player only with us for about four weeks! we could do with his tried and tested pace experience. Hopefully he will be name number 10 on the sheet.
There are three names for the number eleven place. Ben Phillips would like to get his season off to an early start and looked incisive in the friendly I watched against Glamorgan. David Stiff could hold the key to our season with his pace but is he yet under enough control to be an effective weapon? The students of Cardiff were blown away by him but his Glamorgan performance was a little less solid in places - Taunton is excited but will they take the gamble in such an important match as this first one. Morale and points are both crucial at the moment. The third name has been the subject of much debate on the blogs and sites about the place.
Where does the legspinner Michael Munday figure in this 2010 campaign? Will Karthik take his place as the matchwinning spinner or work with him to enhance his value to the squad? Has he moved on enough to be played regularly or will he only be in a side on a spinning wicket. Has he simply been named in this side without a chance of playing? Yorkshire have named a spinner in their side so the conditions may be right and it will be a big match for him if he gets the nod.
Munday probably has a better chance of playing if Wright is iincluded but may still miss out to Stiff if the Yorkshire strip suggests that pace will win the game. We'll have to wait and see.
Yorkshire come off the back of a good 4 wicket away win at Edgbaston and we are bottom of the table having not played in the first round. Banger's Beauties have to hit the ground running and firing. there are no easy games in this division and we have to take every opportunity to gain points. Durham are once again the team to beat and although we have a chance, it has to be a chance we take hold of and hold on to very hard.
There is radio coverage from Radio Leeds. Nathan Jones from our local press will be running a live blog during the game, highlights will be on ECB TV each evening as part of a Championship show. It's all getting very multi-media. Anyone there can post info on the forum and I'll update this front page with anything relevant.
Day 1
We win the toss and choose (surprisingly) to bat. Wright is in with Stiff even though Yorkshire are going in with two spinners and talking a lot about changes to the Headingley wicket to ensure it starts to break up on the third into the fourth day. It looks even dafter when Arul (5) and Compton (6) are returned to the pavilion with not a lot on the board (35). But the captain shows how it should be done and with a little bit of resistance from Hildreth he starts to set out his stall. It's not the greatest of performances from our line-up in the face of good bowling especialy from Bresnan but the skipper stands his ground, moves past 50 in 49 balls and then over 100 in a much more sedate 160 - partly making sure his anchor is secure as few others reach double figures. Finally he is removed by Rashid (LBW) for 117 at 206 for 6 (Hildreth 30, de Bruyn 4, Kieswetter 7).
After the captain's departure Trego and Wright look to get us back on track and it looks like they will make a real go of it but at 244 our allrounder chops on and goes for 45. The new boy follows him soon after making a real hash of a huge Rashid full toss. Rather than smacking it over a boundary he smacks it to Shahzad and walks off for 21 at 252. The backend adds another 20 with Stiff unbeaten on 12 and we are done for 272 at about 5pm with "iffy" light suggesting that although we will get a bowl at Yorkshire it may not be for long.
Charl opens and has Lyth LBW second ball - get into 'em early! Wright starts with a no ball and a wide but is then into his stride and the two Yorkshire batsmen are not comfortable against them. CW has a good shout against McGrath but it is not given and then, with Sayers not off the mark, Trigger puts the man down off Wright at third slip! As is usual, Sayers then hits four to get off the mark and within minutes the umpires have decided that the light is not good enough for this pace and they leave the field at 5:35. Yorkshire 16 for 1 and we have probably just shaded the first day's play.
Day 2 - 3
Having the best of the first day did not auger as well as would have been expected. Yorkshire did not collapse and we did not come out mangling wickets on the second morning. The wicket seemed to flatten and each batsman became a thorn in our side as they did what we had failed to do and went into double figures!! Gale hit a ton and the tail wagged vigorously with an eigth wicket partnership of 109 the most significant.
The choice of David Stiff over Michael Munday did not work and he seemed to be labouring during the day. Despite sterling work from Willoughby, Wright and Thomas, it was left to Peter Trego to finally clear out the last four wickets (after being all but ignored for a large part of the innings). Yorkshire finished their first punt in the first half of Day 3 on 419 all out with a significant lead, a flatish pitch and most of the front line spinners. The balance of the game had moved.
A big job for the much vaunted Somerset batsmen who had failed their captain in the first trip to the wicket. A solid performance would ensure the draw and give us the decision on when to counter attack on Day 4. But 3 down (including the captain - well he can't do it all) with only 88 on the board did not make us believe that we had a big chance to put this one away. Suppiah stood tall and held the team together and after his 77, de Bruyn also stood tall while the cream of SCCC fell short around him. Compton failed again, little from Hildreth, Kieswetter or Trego and although we had wickets in hand at the end of Day 3 we didn't have many and we were a mere 54 ahead!!
Day 4
83 from Zander and 40 from Stiff plus 44 from Thomas helped us make a game of it and although we did add 344 to our first tota, we did not hold them up enough or give them enough to chase for it not to fall apart in the last hour of the match and a loss by 6 wickets is NOT the start we wanted.
Ronniesabre was actually there and had these comments about the game overall...
"Just back from Headingley after watching the 4 days. Think to sum up I would say very disappointing.
I am particularly worried about our much vaunted batting unit. Two pivotal positions in this are at 3 and 4 and Im afraid in this game we were found wanting. Compton looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights and Hildreths body language is not encouraging. These boys will need to up it or we will be in deep doo doo.
CK also to me didn't seem interested. I thought his keeping (especially in the 1st innings) was dire and his batting was all too frenetic. Hopefully after the t20 nonsense in the WI he will sort this but I cant help thinking Buttler would have done just as much in this game.
The bowling didn't look penetrative enough and why was Trego only given a decent bowl on the 3rd morning? Stiff was a nightmare, wides and no balls (22 of them) compared with 2 by the whole of the Yorkshire team.... Personally I would give Turner a run.
We got it wrong at the toss, Yorks had a perfectly balanced team in respect of specialisms and all round look better and stronger than us..."
"...If you think about it though Yorks probably cant play much better, and we certainly can and we took them all the way.....there has to be encouragement in that.
Also thought the umpires were dodgy............every time the ball hit the pads they gave it out. I think at least 30% of the decision were incorrect...........including Trescothick twice..."
So some positives to take away from a start we didn't want. Notts on Wednesday and a big game very early in the season. We cannot lost the big scores this early in a capaign and losing to Notts is NOT an option to even contemplate.
Good morning all,
Tomorrow I am going to write an online blog on day one of Somerset's Championship game against Yorkshire.
I will try to provide regular updates and give you more of a flavour of what is happening at Headingley than you can get from Cricinfo.
Hopefully it will work and you will be able to post your own questions and comments which I will try to answer.

Does that mean they're commentating on the whole thing,Rob?
I hope so,as it'll be over in two days.
We bat first-650 for 4 declared.
They bat-121 all out.
Follow on.
84 all out.
We're on the golf course for the weekend.
And you heard it here first.
If the top four don't all get big tons I'd like to think they'd be dropped for future games.
It's their conversion rate,see.
I'm not happy with 190's.
That's simply not good enough.
And if Munday doesn't get his Simon Cowell factor out then he too can go elsewhere.
Wright wants to play tomorrow - he took eight wickets for Northants on his last appearance at Leeds - but may be kept in wraps for the Notts game next week.
Phillips, Stiff and Munday are in the 13, and will compete for the last place if Wright plays.
Can't imagine it will turn much at Leeds in April - Munday must be the favourite to drop out. After that, I would imagine it will come down to an analysis of the pitch as to whether it offers pace and bounce (read Stiff) or a green seamer (Phillips)
I did see Mr Wright leg being massaged on the table at the Taunton Vale ground and wondered if he had a problem that explained why he didn’t play in that match.
It seems I owe you an apology, CP - as per CJM's post it seems that MKM IS in the first-team frame.
However, it would seem to make Grockle's point about only giving him two overs the other day look all the more pertinent. I thought it was a bad move because they were, theoretically, offering him a chance to lay down a marker for later in the season. It turns out, it was a truly awful move, since they were (apparently) actually considering him playing him in the very first CC game of the season, but still did not give him a proper bowl!
I agree that it might not spin much at Headingley in April, but I'd back us against Yorks with any of the team selections suggested above. Besides, given that Marcus will surely score his first double-century of the season, the bowlers should have a nice big target to aim at ...
Thursday is the start of something great, the season that makes history.
Our first ever Championship victory is nigh.
I urge you all,to go back home.
And prepare for victory.
You are a cheeky blighter,LoL.
I suggest your train to Northumberland must be leaving pretty soon.
The cheek.
The bare faced cheek.
As I've always said, wherever I lay my bat, that's my Frome.
Yorkshire have added spinner David Wainwright and all-rounder Richard Pyrah to the side that beat Warwickshire by four wickets in their opening match of the season, but are expected to be unchanged.
Too right,Geordie.
The boys will be on the golf course drinking sangria on Saturday morning.
Victory number one under the belt and a kick rrrr's season ahead.
Bring em on..
Bring em all on.........
Interesting to see Munday is indeed ahead of Waller which I do think makes sense as he is proven wicket taker albeit not recently..
Of course he won't play.. my point about Stiff is apart from being on form he give us something different; aggression and pace which the steadier Willo, Nicholson (we think), Thomas and Trego do not.
Personally I can't see how Thomas can play, not least because the others have overs under their belts..
Thomas will play - get over it. The club's pre-match release says so, and as he was the co-leader of our attack last year (arguably its leader for the first month of the season) it's clearly the right decision.
I agree with you that Stiff should play; but not at Alfonso's expense.
My attack would be (from 8-11) Thomas, Wright/Phillips, Stiff and Willoughby.

With the forecast I've heard I think we could use 11 brass monkeys for the next 4 days! Catches win matches and dropped catches lose matches!!
OLDBOYBA!
Not only because they already have a win under their belt, but simply because they have a meaningful game under their belt.
For the above reason, if we can be on a par with them, or just slightly behind on first innings, I will feel optimistic of turning it around to a win during the 2nd innings as - I would assume - we will blow the cob-webs out during our first innings.
If it's this cold in Jersey goodness knows how cold it must be in Yorkshire.
Today is a good day. Just discovered that Mrs BVIG is expecting BVI G Jnr II at the end of October so the boys will obviously go out and stuff the Yorkies in their honour!
I'm chuckling at Yorkshire's answer to Alan Partridge and particularly enjoyed his exclamation of "Thankyou Vienna" when Tres despatched McGrath's first ball for 4!
FE - I was also somewhat surprised at our decision to bat. I assumed it must have been a nice sunny morning, but have been told that is not so.
The two spinners in the Yorks team could be a clue as to why we batted?
Also, I think the forecast for day four is overcast with showers, so if the first 3 innings take up (roughly) 3 days, then that would then come into play.
Final explanation could be that a certain individual was just keen to get on with his primary job.
sheffieldsabre Besides, given that Marcus will surely score his first double-century of the season, the bowlers should have a nice big target to aim at ...
(SISUO starting early this season!)
hmmmm.. going to be a major pain in the derriere if we're quickly off for bad light vs being able to get into them under the grey skies. Forecast for tomorrow involves quite a bit of sunshine which one would expect to favour the batting side.
Still, we have something to bowl at and, on paper, Charl, Wright and Alfonso looks pretty good.

Very interested to hear from the Yorks commentators that Martyn Moxon has expressed concern at the number of pitches nationwide , including Headingley, which seemed last year to be at their flattest on day 4.
I think we need them at least three down by the time they get to their ton. I'd really like four down at that point, to be honest.
Wright was, as one might expect, a bit rusty yesterday (by the sounds of it) but I hope that slighly warmer weather today and simply getting into the swing of things should mean that he will really settle into a groove as the innings wears along.
I do wonder, though, whether Lord T might give some consideration to Alf Thomas's head-to-head record vs Yorkshire and ensure that Alf gets an early bowl this morning, possibly opening up?
The commentators suggested in their comantary that Wright should have had a wicket yesterday, dropped they think by Hildreth.-- The "This is Bristol" report say it was Trego that dropped the catch.
Edited.

The "This is Bristol" report say it was Trego that dropped the catch.
To be fair to the comms, Mike, they fairly rapidly corrected themselves when someone sharing their box (perhaps Nathan?) pointed out their error. You may have missed that.
Marcus batted first due to dryness of wicket combined with absence (by ECB diktaat) of the heavy-roller. IOW.. Marcus is expecting the pitch to get a little uneven as the match progresses, rather than getting flatter as it goes on.
Always baffles me why pete never seems to get the ball first change when most of us agree that he is about our only genuine swing bowler.
Instead arul gets on before him!!!
Not looking (or sounding) too great at the moment.
Stiff sounds like he's been somewhat wild, as is his wont. More disturbingly, there have been suggestions from the commentators that he's not been bowling with any great pace, either.
We're going to need to get right back on it after lunch, or we could be left with a very long time in the field..
Your own supporter site got it right first time by saying that Trego dropped the catch at third slip. If only we were your first port of call then all these problems would be sorted! :-)
They thought on the radio that it was ZdB...they only need to look at his arms to sort out who it is.
Trigger on for a couple before lunch. Nearly 3 figures up and the radio guys reckon Yorks will see this as a good morning. Can't really argue.
I think only Stiff really dissappointed with the ball though.
I'm brought back to your comments of yesterday, Grockle, about wickets thrown away towards the end of our innings.... it's starting to look as though that could be really costly.
I think, with hindsight, despite the occasional low bounce, we got the decision at the toss wrong - by deciding to bat we left ourselves to bat under heavy cloud cover, and then have had to bowl in the sunshine. Perhaps the sun was also forecast to shine yesterday, in which case we just suffered some bad luck?
But it now looks like Yorks will bat way past our score and then we'll have to bat quite a bit on day four, which is also forecast to feature plenty of cloud cover.
And with Notts hammering Kent, the next game will be far from easy, either.
I hope our new skipper isn't yet resigned to them batting "way past our score".
The next day or so may represent the first big test of his leadership, but I hope that he can keep the guys' heads up, and remind them that provided we limit the first innings damage, the Tykes will still have to bat last on this deck.
4 for 26 from 14 by Pete and "Brother of's" words from yesterday seem prophetic.
Now we need a big big batting day to give us something to go at tomorrow. The spinner decision may still be a major one but 300 today with wickts left could make day 4 really interesting
Excellent wipe up of the tail though by that allrounder boy!!
But it's not looking wonderful with three down and still 50 odd behind. Needs a big number from Arul and some middle order backup to keep this game in sight
I'm really enjoying this contest. Yorkshire are favourites for the moment, but if we can score 150 more there could be a great tussle in the 4th innings.
I like the Yorkshire commentators, who know their game and are fair-minded. If they have a slight Yorkshire bias, I don't blame them at all.
Pete has gone and there isn't a lot to come. The batting front end hasn't really fired this game..
4 over 20 in the first smack and only 3 over 20 this time around. Well done to ZdB who has added our lead effectively but a 54 run lead with a day to go and 4 wickets left doesn't look wonderful.
That's the spirit, LoL.
Keep the faith boys.
If the last 4 partnerships can eke out just 25 more each, and take it to, or just beyond, lunch, this game could have more than another twist to it yet.
Come on my babbies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like a brave effort by Arul in our 2nd dig and good to see him show form.
However, it also looks like we are on course for a poor result and, what is more, there is a potentially very difficult game at Trent Bridge up next. Notts should be full of confidence having dismantled Kent.
Don't know what the weather did today, but tomorrow's forecast suggests we'll be batting tomorrow under the same kind of cloud blanket as on day one. That means that it's tough to see the lower-order excelling with the bat. Of course, it might also mean things would be far tougher for Yorks if we could add a load more but, let's face it, there's been a distint absence of substantial partnerships for SCCC in this game, to date.
I think we got our team selection wrong - and there is no hindsight involved in that statement. I said a week to ten days ago that we should pick an extra batsman, rather than a specialist spinner or going mad with seamers. I think it was borderline insane to go in with five seamers (plus Zander.) There's that old saying that if three seamers cannot do the job, then four will not, either. God knows what that suggests about five seamers vs six!
Many folk here rail against Pete's non-selection for England. However, we need to be honest and say that England cannot be blamed too much for not picking Pete, whilst it remains the case that Somerset's own captains do not bowl him very much.
It seems to me that modern captains simply do not seem to grasp that a genuine medium pacer CAN be effective. Just look at the man's strike-rate - he IS a wicket-taker.
I hope we at least make Yorks fight hard for their final four wickets (and whatever runs they need) tomorrow, and then I hope we think again and replace Craig (who I don't think is allowed to play the next one?) with Buttler and bring in another batsman instead of Stiff for Trent Bridge.
Of course, having said all the above, I still put most of the blame for us being way behind the eight-ball in this contest on our batsmen, as opposed to our bowling. From what I heard yesterday, all three of Charl, Wright and Alfonso bowled well, as did Pete. I know that a couple of chances did go down and that never helps, of course.
An extra batsman? With Pete already at 7?
Sorry AG but NO! Do you want Pete at 8?
WITH hindsight, and I'm more than prepared to acknowledge that it's with hindisght, I'd accept that the team selection was wrong in having no specialist spinner (although Grockle is quite correct in saying that the Yorks comms were unanimous in thinking Patterson shoild have played rather than Wainwright), and that the decision to bat first didn't work to our advantage.
BUT: this game isn't dead yet; let's leave the moratoria until it is.
I don't think there's a rule that says that every specialist batsmen that we pick has to automatically bat ahead of Pete in the line-up. I would probably not put Buttler ahead of Pete in the line-up for Trent Bridge, let alone an extra batsman (who would, necessarily, be one of our novices.)
Perhaps we could have used a spinner here, FE, though I say that only with hindsight, as you did. But giving Michael Munday hardly any bowling in the last warm-up game before this one would hardly (I would guess?) have been ideal preparation for him. I don't think Mr Rose was anticipating there would be much need for a spinner in Leeds, any more than we were. He WAS however (to judge by the things he said) anticipating a pitch that would help the seamers, so it's not clear why we needed quite so many of them. Having said that, I accept that there was some sort of issue surrounding Wright's hamstring (hopefully, that has now been put to bed.)
Trent Bridge is a swing bowlers ground, to my mind. Hence, the front three seamers, backed by Pete and Zander should be more than enough. Without doing any checking, I don't recall spinners having much impact on a game at Trent Bridge for some while and we do, of course, already have Arul to provide some spin.
Therefore, for me, the choice for Trent Bridge will/should be between again going in with a boat-load of seamers, or picking an extra batsman.
Again with bag-loads of hindsight, I think Max would have been the optimal selection here. Spin option, but capable bat.
I made no secret of wanting Stiff in: he (and the way he's been used) has disappointed me so far. Perhaps Fats should have had his spot.
"But giving Michael Munday hardly any bowling in the last warm-up game before this one would hardly (I would guess?) have been ideal preparation for him."
So, in that match against weak batting opposition, Marcus gave the bulk of the bowling to Turner (who wasn't selected v. Yorkshire) and Stiff.
The latter is playing against Yorkshire, but on reflection, was his bowling in that game "ideal preparation for him"?
Michael Munday would have played if David Stiff hadn't, but at least the game goes into a 4th. day, and there is still a lot to play for.
Grockle But it would have been MnM FE not Fats if David hadn't played.
Quite so, Grockle.
Although I was meaning to suggest that with total hindsight, the squad selection was wrong before the team selection was, if you catch my drift.
Maybe they also still have concerns about Michael but it does seem daft to not bowl him in the Uni game then include him for this one. Unless he was always going to sit this one out and they didn't have a plan to pick a spinner under any circumstances.
I have come to the conclusion that it is the small things that are going to count in the seasons games. For example if we had scored 25 more in the first innings, and then let them score 45 less (dropped catches) and if we score another 100 this morning (instead of running out Hildreth) then we are looking at not just the 50 ahead we are but 220 and that could have been interesting. Not up to scratch this time I'm afraid but then Durham are going to have to struggle to hang on. When was the last time they followed on?
Notts have put themselves in pole position and we can dent that this week.
I was aware of course of the legendary Fats Waller, and thus the 'tag' that Frome Exile initially gave to our own Max Waller.
What I was unable to understand was why Grockle's post yesterday of 20:54 appeared to me to contradict his earlier post of 19:44, because it was obvious that by being in the squad, Munday would have played if they had decided to choose a spinner and not Waller.
Yes, FE, the squad selection with MKM over Max caught me totally by surprise. I was fully aware that, towards the start of last season, Mr Rose was of the opinion that Max needed to turn his leg break more and that, therefore, MKM was the wrist-spinner of choice for CC games. However, that preference certainly seemed to be reversed in the second half of last season and there was nothing in MKM's very brief bowl vs Cardiff to suggest that the preference would be abruptly reversed again for this game.
As regards the team selection for the next one, I think the real issue we have is that really Ben Phillips is the only truly proven (first-class) cricketer that we have in reserve anymore. With Wes and Neil Edwards both leaving, I'm left in the position of advocating that we pick a novice batsman to strengthen the batting for Notts, which is hardly the strongest argument that I have ever marshalled.
In other words, we arguably only have ten truly proven first-class cricketers available at the moment, hence the problem with filling the 11th spot.
It's obvious that if Craig cannot play vs Notts, then Buttler will step in. But what to do with that 11th spot? One could argue that if the top six get their runs, we should not need an extra batsman. Equally, though, it is surely far from the bounds of possibility that Charl, Wright, Alf and Pete (with back up from Zander) can bowl Notts out for a less than dominant total. Indeed, I think we should back that attack under the anticipated cirucmstances of bowler-friendly conditions at Trent Bridge.
The reason why I come down in favour of an extra batsman is that unless we make a huge score for six declared or something (very unlikely at Trent Bridge) that batsman will get a chance to influence the game. Conversely, if we go with another absolute slew of seamers, then it's perfectly possible that we'll bowl Notts out with Charl, Wright and Alf and the extra specialist seamer will then be a spare part in the contest.
Missed all the action yesterday due to my first game, which di not go well as i pulled my calf!!!
Anyway i was so glad that pete finally got the ball and showed what he can do and we are all correct in saying that he is a genuine wicket taker,so the question i have to ask is why (and i may have been mis informed) did he not bowl yesterday until the last 20 mins before lunch?
Oh well like we have said hindsight is a great thing!!!
I have to have say that I have heard Marcus before publicly going with the Duncan Fletcher theory on bowling - i.e. that it all has to be done as quickly as humanly possible.
That said, Charl is very far from express and he always (rightly) gets plenty of work in every CC fixture.
I always thought that we had picked one seamer to many for this game. Once we've picked all of Charl, Wright, Alf and Stiff then, I suppose, there is a kind of in-built pressure to ensure that all of them get plenty of overs because otherwise (unless the game is won), you'll have people like me asking "Why did we pick this guy if we are not going to bowl him." In Pete's case, of course, he is there to bat too.
It sounded like Stiff's bowling on Friday was ropey, to say the least. I wonder if the fact he got quite a lot of bowling, in spite of that fact, suggests that we are trying to bowl him into form and that, therefore, he is already nailed on to start in Nottingham? I did not hear yesterday's play, so do not know how he bowled yesterday.
yes, FE. Unfortunately, Wright has just perished - lbw Hannon Dalby for 25.
I have been really rather pleased with Wright's debut and I am already thinking that, should anything go wrong with the Kartik deal, I would quite like to simply extend Wright's deal to compensate.
The game is, indeed, being played under heavy cloud cover, as per the forecast.
Damn, brilliant catch by Bresnan and Zander gone. Good effort from Zander. We have three batsmen with some serious runs under their belt to take to Nottingham.
It's all down to Alf and Stiff to try to give themselves any kind of target to bowl at.
I in fact pointed out below that post that Michael would have played as Max wasn't in the squad. That is why you needed to put your question to FE and not me.
FE actually posted about Max and seemed to be saying that if you went back another stage of hindsight Somerset may have decided on Waller for his batting given that the front end did not do it's job and we needed tail end batsmen.
That is why i then understood what he meant...hope that is clearer
The lunch break gives them a decent chance, I suppose, to get Alf after the break (he will face first), after he had sounded pretty untroubled this morning.
Stiff has mixed a couple of great shots, in the end, with some airy-fairy stuff outside off. Does not really sound as though the pitch has deteriorated to any marked extent. And the weather is getting better, rather than worse.
I think, realistically, we need to hope we can manage to defy them for another 15 overs, whilst adding 35 or so runs in the process. Two overs would then (I think) be lost due to the change of innnings, which would leave Yorks needing just over 200 from 49 overs.
Of course, there is also a question, in theory, about whether we might actually be better off with a less ambiguous situation... i.e. if they end up needing 170 off, say, 58 overs then there could be no thought of looking to defend in the field and escape with a draw .. we would have to go all out for the win in that scenario..
Well there we are, not what were looking for at the start of the season if even there was a bit of fight aat the end.
Yorks pretty much bosses the game all the way through. Marcus really must be regretting the decision to go in first even if he played well. So many grounds these days seem to offer the bowler most at the start.
Too early to offer an judgements on performances although I was let down by Stiff whose fire I felt we needed to balance the other bowlers.
In terms of selection I think it was right to go in with four seamers plus Trego as our batting line up is strong enough and as serial draw merchants we do need extra options with the ball. A spinner? Munday would have been a brave move, too brave maybe at this stage.
Also remember with Kartik we'll still be fielding the same number of bowlers; he'll just play instead of a seamer. Trego's bowling shows he needs to be given more responsibility on that front.
Without Kieswetter it becomes a bit more complicated. Can Buttler go in at six, should we play an extra batter? But who? Durston would have been ideal with his bowling as well..
It does bother me the lack of experienced batting in reserve.
Notts are looking good. Lets hope the team steps up to match them.
What the hell happened here? I went out with us making them worry over their lunch and I return to find we've been stuffed by 6. What occurred during the afternoon?
Well, I thought that today was the first day of the four where we really competed on more or less equal terms with the Yorkies.
A brave effort today. Well done to Yorks. A terrific game by their skipper, Gale and a very good one for their young bowler, Hannon-Dalby.
However, still quite worrying, overall. The Notts game still looks very difficult and the bookies will have us favoured to lose two games out of two to start the season. If that does come to pass, we cannot really expect to compete for the title and, more worryingly, we would be left with a relegation struggle.
We really do need to seriously examine that eleventh spot. Buttler will, if necessary, replace Craig but, beyond that, we need to sort out whether we really want to pick Stiff, or go for Phillips, or pick a batsman (albeit a novice) or pick a spinner.
I went out at lunch, Grockle, so cannot tell you what finally transpired. Sounded like we batted quite well and Yorks, especially Wainwright, bowled indifferently during the morning.
However, I did not get the impression, listening to the morning session, that the pitch was anything other than friendly for the batsmen. And the sun came out just before lunch, so if stayed for the afternoon...
Top six just not productive enough on what was, throughout, a slowish pitch, IMO.
We stayed in this one because of the 'stickyness' of the back 5 after one decent performance from someone in the front 5 in each innings.
We have to pick a spinner if we have one that takes wickets I think - need the variation. But it is difficult if you can't rely on the run making ability of our much vaunted batting line-up.
Still can't explain the lack of faith in the man picked to take on that spinning role. Too much faith in Suppiah? Too much faith in Stiff? Too much faith in our ability to hit runs? Hmmm.
A complete guess, but I suspect that David Stiff might be a Brian Rose player/pick and that SCCC captains, past and present, are less keen than Mr Rose is on him.
Don't really know what is going on with our two wrist-spinners. Obviously, it's only the middle of April, so we would not normally even be talking about them. However, with the exception of maybe one week before Easter, the country has generally been very dry since the beginning of the year.
When we go to Old Trafford, I think we'll have to pick at least one of those two, if not both. I read the other day that the North West has been enjoying/suffering its driest spell of weather for nearly 100 years (since the beginning of Jan) and Old Trafford is usually a turning track anyway!
Max is quite a tight bowler, so I think we could gamble on both wrist spinners if we felt the need.
Before that we get Trent Bridge, where swing is king and a home game where ????????????????????????
To be honest, I don't think the home game will see a pitch that is massively different to recent seasons but, with the heavy roller banned, I may stand to be corrected..
Big debut for a 20-year-old slow left armer in the game that's just finished at OT. At least 8 in the match, I think. I'd be seriously considering Max for that one.
Team A played 36 home games. Teams B and C played 34 home games. Team D played only 31 home games, and team E played 35 home games?
32,33,33, 35 and 28 seem to be the equivalent number of away games?
Je ne peux pas comprendre, as they say in France.
p.s whilst I do not get the disparities between the numbers of games played, I would assume that we are Team D. If we were team D, than that is the lowest "result," percentage amongst home games played by those five teams.
Edit: No it isn't, E has the lowest home result percentage.
It's obvious that we are not E, though, because we have not lost than many away games.

ah!!! I did not read it with sufficient rigour. I thought they were numbers of CC games, which is why I could not understand the numbers.
Edit: On second thoughts, there is still some variance in the number of first-class away games played. I don't think counties play away tourist games. Perhaps games that were abandoned without a ball bowled were struck from the records?

Yep I did not look for tied games or no result games. Could have done I suppose 'Cricket Archive' can do it but I was more interested in how 'serial' our drawing was in relation to the other counties.
Just back from Headingley after watching the 4 days.
The bowling didn't look penetritive enough and why was Trego only given a decent bowl on the 3rd morning? Stiff was a nightmare, wides and no balls (22 of them) compared with 2 by the whole of the Yorkshire team. Thats 44 extra runs. Didnt look half the bowler that Hannon whathis name was. Personally I would give Turner a run.
We got it wrong at the toss, Yorks had a perfectly balanced team in respect of specialisms and all round look better and stronger than us. We have a lot to do and as someone else said on this thread if we lose to Notts it will be a long slog.
Also I don't know how Hurry can make any comment on the game. He spent the whole of the 3rd day texting and on the phone as he was milling about next to me. Maybe I should take over as I concentrated on every ball.
Maybe Tractor can let us have his thoughts as I saw him tehre too?
"I'm pleased with the way we batted today (yesterday) but we are certainly not where we need to be in terms of form."
I said before the game that I thought Yorkshire might very well have the edge, due to having got a meaningful game under their belts (at Edgbaston) before their meeting with us. I highly doubt that a game with Cariff Uni provides a comparable work-out.
Apparently, Kent bowled very, very badly in favourable bowling conditions at Trent Bridge. If we are lucky a number of the Notts batsmen will not have been tested yet and our lot will manage to bowl a good deal better at them than Kent did ( I did not get the impression that SCCC bowled poorly in Leeds). Hashim Amla certainly worries me, though.
Stiff was a nightmare, wides and no balls (22 of them) compared with 2 by the whole of the Yorkshire team. Thats 44 extra runs.
Maths a bit awry there, ronnie. 22 is the total once the extra run and any scored have been added. DS overstepped 7 times (which is 7 too many admittedly) but 44 is overstating the case.
I didn't make my post to worry people, just my observation on what I saw. If you think about it though Yorks proabably cant play much better, and we certainly can and we took them all the way.....there has to be encouragment in that.
Also thought the umpires were dodgy............every time the ball hit the pads they gave it out. I think at least 30% of the decision were incorrect...........including Trescothick twice.
On to Notts now..........lets get straight back in the saddle!!! Maybe we will be smiling next Sat evening.
If we think Stiff overstepping 7 times is too many (although I agree it is) just wait to see if Kartik does what he did at Middx (plenty of no-balls). It will drive me utterly insane if we have a slow bowler bowling no-balls. He has seemed to be over it in the recent IPL so let's hope he brings those levels of concentration to the task in the CC, too.
Ronnie - were you sat somewhere behind the bowler (to judge the LBWs, I mean?) I got the impression the Yorks radio guys were not squarely behind the bowler, so they did not seem to have many opinions, one way or tother on the LBWs.
Thank you, Ronnie, for going to the trouble of making your report, even if its contents are about as welcome to me as Lord Snooty as PM (!).
Compton needs to score at Trent Bridge, I would say. And that's not because I assume that with an ordinary batsman that he either scores somewhere in the first two games, or he is doomed, but rather because Compton's own history suggests he will either have an excellent season, or an awful one. I would guess that he is even more of a confidence and form player than your average batsman. Probably even more so than Hildreth.
So I say what I do because I think he will need the confidence that such a knock will bring, otherwise he might spiral into one of his terrible seasons. By the same token, even if he does have a terrible season, I would suggest we persist with him for 2011, because history suggests he will then have an excellent time after a bad time (!)
I'm pretty sure that Trent Bridge will be a tougher test of our batsmen than Headingley proved to be so, as or right now, I am much more concerned about our batting than our bowling.
No worries AG, although we lost I enjoyed it as I always do, but I am really biased when it comes to Somerset and look forward to revenging them next month.
I was behind the bowlers arm most of the time so had a reasonable view. However, on the Thursday when Hildy was out I was up in the main stand and had a side on view. It was obvious that his LBW was too high. It probably pitched and went straight but was far too high. Sometimes being behind the bowler wouldn't give that view.
You are correct too.....we have a number who need a big game v Notts but we also need to select the right team too. I suppose thats what it all about though.
We really should not need need more, pace bowling wise, than Charl, Wright, Alf, Pete and Zander for Trent Bridge, I would have thought?
But the question is, is there an extra player, be they a batsman or a slow-bowler that the powers-that-be have enough faith in to pick for a CC game at this juncture? Or do we pick Stiff again, partly by default and partly because he made some runs and managed one wicket yesterday?
theres actually a case for Phillips to come into the equation, but in view of the dry weather in that area and forecast until Friday as well, I would suggest a specialist spinner would be the way to go. Willo, Thommo, Trego, Wright and De Bruyn should be enough seam with Arul and AN other to back them up.
This is only my view though and others may differ.
Ronniesabre Stiff was a nightmare, wides and no balls (22 of them) compared with 2 by the whole of the Yorkshire team.
This is what I said upon first hearing of the signing of David Stiff initially on a two month or so contract, last year.
Quote:
Clarence Parker I learnt something of David Stiff when he was involved with the England under 19 set - up, and recall that his radar was often way off target. Sadly, wides and no - balls were far too commonplace.
I accepted at the time that he should be given a chance, but if some 6 or 7 years on from his England Under 19 days (and with Somerset being after all his fourth county) there is still a problem with wides and no - balls, then I have very serious misgivings as to whether any coach is ever likely to remedy these apparent problems of his.
Yes,Both.
Can't be too harsh after just one game.
Time to up the game now and start performing in every session.
No going to sleep.
There is a job to be done.
AG sorry not to get back earlier but we aren't D and although surely we must be E because of KT's assessment of our 'serial draw characteristics', especially at home, we aren't E either!!
D is in fact LANCASHIRE and E is our friends from the West Midlands WARWICKSHIRE
Gosh...doesn't seem as clear cut as assumed when you break it into the actual facts does it?
We are in fact C - the lowest total of draws home and away in the five counties investigated. The other two are Hampshire (A) and Sussex (
