The Championship plan is unvieled. The spin attack is going to spin us back into contention on turning wickets at home and at the Rose Bowl. Pardon me if i don't sound entirely convinced by this but it seems to be the present thinking. t didn't work at Home against Sussex. It has t work against Hampshire or Durham will be too far ahead t be caught.

A plan was hatched in the strategy rooms of the County Ground. The master plan to beat Sussex and keep us in the hunt.
"Dry the pitch. Cut all the grass off it. Win the toss. Bat BIG and spin them out in 7 sessions twice".
The team picked reflected this plan;
Trescothick, Suppiah, Hildreth, Langer, de Bruyn, Trego, Kieswetter, Banks, Waller, Phillips, Willoughby
Triple spin and tight pace would do the trick.
Unfortunately, the plan fell at the third hurdle. The pitch was prepared and.....we lost the toss. Game over. 742 before we got to bat on Day 2. Most of Day 3 (all but 18 overs lost to rain and a wet outfield and Day 4 mind-numbing except for a flurry between the 100th and the 120th overs by Craig and Peter to get maximum batting points by passing 400. All over by 4:50 and 10 points each for the most boring game of the year.
Bad decision made worse by the principles on our side blaming the pitch they had asked to be prepared. Do we really have the spin capability to do major damage to a batting side in Division 1?

Well we'd better hope so because this vital fixture has started with the same side taking the field for Somerset to get maximum points from this game and move us into contender position against the run away leaders of the Division at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday next.
The only change to the Sussex line-up is the return of Alfonso Thomas for Ben Phillips but we seem to be either relying on the spin option in the second half of this game or extensive work from Pete Trego and Zander de Bruyn. Either way we need a big win or the Pro40 will be our only chance of silverware this year.
Hampshire have won the toss and chosen to bat.

Careful Grockle: you're not sounding sufficiently like a corporate lackey in your assessment of the Sussex game. 
think thats us about 920 for 6 in the last 2 games when we have been bowling. If this doesn't say something to the management then I don't iknow what will.

Not on your own with that one. Be it a pace or spin king we need someone to spearhead the wicket taking and take five fers
Anyone have any idea of the bowling combinations used today ? Pete has bowled 11 overs for 14. Doesn't that look like a good partner for a spinner at the other end ? Does seem strange to have only bowled him for the 11.
So with a quick-fire 50 in the last game, and a first-day three-fer in this one, it's looking like Banks is finally (and perhaps too late) showing the form that Congar and I had such high hopes for when he signed.
On the other site, Andy Hurry says this is a used wicket, so would be expected to turn more as the game progresses. Must hope we can get rid of them tomorrow and get a healthy first innings lead.

Just to clarify: I'm not saying that he should be rewarded with a new contract on the basis of this one day: more pointing out that this is what those of us who supported his initial recruitment expected to be the norm!

Well three wickets on day one suggest that the next three days might provide his best chance to do so.
I suspect though that AG, for one, might suggest that a performance in the "last-chance saloon" should be given no greater credence than the big performances he has given in trials games and in securing this contract. I think he has already decided that Banks only steps it up at such times, and there does appear to be a pattern which gives that perception some credibility.

1) As we are playing three spinners to take advantage of a spin friendly wicket, why have seamers bowled 70% of our overs to date ?
(I realise the 2nd innings - if there is one -, may be different, but this does seem modest usage of players picked specifically for the conditions).
2) Can anyone recall any (post Mushtaq) Championship game which we have won by the efforts of a spin based bowling 'attack' ?

Apathy has set in and by the look of it and the response on these boards everyone else is too. I am worried about the number of times we struggle to finsih teams off. Today looks quite embarrassing- I hope the team are and we can put it right with the bat when the question of whether it is a flat wicket will really be answered.
Not one to say a glass half full or anything but Max's figures in this game and the last are of concern.

Sadly KT I don't know but I am actually not sure whether just at this satge any of them are good enough. THe best at the moment appears to be Suppiah.
However, to get better and more experienced you have to bowl so its catch 22. Do we have the time to let them learn in Div 1.....I don't think we do to be honest. How many would accept relegation if it meant a couple of quality bowlers in 2/3 yaers time. Even then there are no guarantees. Its a tough call.

It's not a tough call for me! Top four in Div One every time suits me - wouldn't want to go back to second-class cricket, even if it did give Munday, Waller et al a few more cheap wickets.

Think we're talking at cross-purposes, CP - I don't mean that Waller (or anybody else) got cheap wickets when we were in Div Two, just that any they got there in the future would be cheaper than would Div One wickets - and I'd rather they learnt their trade at the higher level - even if it's tougher there...not to mention bowling at Taunton!
With such a high score two of our bowlers did remarkably well, Thomas and Trego going at below three an over.

I would have liked Arul Suppiah to have bowl a few more overs, we can't say this time PT was under bowled after bowling 28 overs.

17% of the overs as first-change seamer is hardly over-bowled either though, Mike.
Obviously it's hard to comment without having even ghad any commentary today, but the argument that having PT and Zander available legitimises the three-spinner strategy looks a bit thin when between them they've only bowled a fifth of the first innings overs.
I think I'm as disappointed by today as I've been at any point in the last three years.

I sincerely hope we do well tomorrow, but I am pretty uncomfortable with our bowling performances of late. Would we not have been better off with a little more fire power against both Sussex & Hants ?

If there's one thing I'm sure about over the last few CC matches, its that I'm unsure just what tactics we've been using.
I can't personally understand why Omari hasn't been playing all season if he has suddenly become the secret weapon that was supposed to win us the Championship. If spin was the key then Arul surely should have been uised more in both games?
It seems that we have accepted we do not have the pace to win it and therefore we are opting for the other alternative - but we don't have enough of that either.
But Omari Banks as the best option? Why? No offence to him because he hasn't done anything wrong when picked but he isn't a sudden game winner with an eviable record. He's just another of our stock spinning all rounders, he doesn't bowl devil balls or anything like that.
Anyway it was probably a dead rubber but it would have been nice to go down raging rather than like a headless chicken.
But as the guys on the Durham site say - tomorrow is another day and this is only 50% done.

You could be correct CP. Is it calculated on the date or on seasons? (I would think on the date so he may be OK)
The 'level one' remains in place for 2 years, and if it's repeated in that time, they get 3 penalty points. so do it about 8 times and they get a driving ban. I think that's correct.
I hope it's not cover 'driving', Tractor - that would be serious.
Anyway, Mr. Langer or not, we need to knuckle down today and try to save this game.

I very much hope so. Would leave us the possibility of a win. I guess it depends on hants ambitions.
Given that their spinner had taken so many wickets, Hants had no choice but to enforce the follow-on in the hopes of bowling us out a second time. I just hope they don't succeed.

I quite agree, Mike, I'd have batted again, scoring a quick 200 or so and given us nothing to play for on a turning wicket. The rain doesn't look like affecting the result any further.

I'm distraught! I was following the game until we were 390-8 - I was very happy then: 4 batting points, looked a very good chance of getting the fifth, and we'd saved the follow-on.
Have now discovered that not only did we not reach 400, but that follow-on is 150 behind, not 200.

Yep, helps the MT 2000 run cause far better, only problem is it gives JL another chance to get himself in trouble...

But what happens then? 105 behind 10 wickets up. In order to make this any kind of game we have to score 300 plus in 2 sessions and then have a go.
A draw leaves us nowhere and Durham closer to the title. We have to win to stay a relevant contender and we can only do that by getting Hampshire out again on a spinning pitch with insufficient time.
Will Justin give his big hitters their head tomorrow morning and hope they hit big and quick?
Will he then make an ambitious declaration and trust his spin trio (who he picked for the purpose) to have a go?
Can they take 10 if they have a session (and a half?) at them with the pacemen in support?

A draw leaves us nowhere and Durham closer to the title. We have to win to stay a relevant contender and we can only do that by getting Hampshire out again on a spinning pitch with insufficient time.

I was only including completed innings but yes if you take his current overnight notout then 1547 it is, should be closing in on the 1800 barrier after batting all day tomorrow so looks like being 2000 being hit sometime during the Durham game!!!

We will bat tomorrow for as long as poss. If we were to go at 5 an over we should be 100 ahead at lunch with 60 overs left, add another 100 and Hants would have a target of 200 in 40 overs... Can't see that happening. Looks like an 8 pt draw
To be 100 ahead by lunch would mean scoring 205 runs in the morning session, I can't see Somerset managing that even on a good day.
Maybe the weather will have a say, as we've had plenty of autumnal weather this morning.

When Jusin came in after Arul that said "shut up shop people we're taking the draw". Good luck to Marcus andloads of runs today but that is our Championship over ladies and gentlemen. We had to win this game to have any chance of overhauling Durham but now the game at Chester LS is going to be all about pride but a dead rubber in relation to the competition.

Second place will be well worth having, financially speaking as well as pride in improving on last year.
If we can get that to add to a strong Pro40 showing (hopefully winning it!), the 20-20 Final and an improved FPT this year, that will be a pretty good season, in my books.

They had 17 overs last night. Total of 94 in our innings, so 77 bowled today, they lose 2 for the innings changeover so I reckon they've got 17 overs to get 139 runs. Squeaky bottom time.
I think Max seems to be improving his batting. He must have confirmed his place as our LBG bowler of the future as he seems to beat MM in all three basic skills.

Moving to the Pro40, Yorkshire batsman Adam Lyth, who looked awful against us at Taunton a few Sundays back, has certainly done us a favour at Scarborough today.
He hit 109 off 95 balls against Sussex, who are currently ahead of Somerset by a point but after today will have played two more games. Yorkshire reached a handy 254-2, and Sussex in reply are currently 67-2 after 12 (Joyce out, but Goodwin at the wicket).

I think it is still about "undue risk", Grizzzly, but not exclusively about risk to the batsmen.
I d=on't want to be negative, but it seems to me that Andy Hurry's comments on the game on the other site completely miss the point.
Yes, our batting was - selectively - good, but how on earth can we ever expect to win the Championship with a bowling attack like that ?

Durham do have the strongest bowling attack that is why they are at the top, until ours is as good we will always be the bridesmaid.
On a positive note out batting is stronger than theirs.

The end of the season (when and if we know for certain) will be the appropriate time to pay tribute to what Justin has done for Somerset over the past few years.

If you saw Nottinghamshire`s bowling capitulated to Worcestershire in the televised Pro40 match on Saturday, RS, escorting them home with ample balls to spare, you wouldn`t bet against Sussex under the Hove floodlights (if they are working!) next Monday.

And also, should they not then be penalised for fielding an understrength team. After all they played their strongest team against us. When two teams are going for a title surely they owe it to both those teams to play as hard against each. That would happen in football in Scotland where I come from.

I was also thinking that about not playing your strongest team, it is part of the ECB rules.

It's a difficult rule to prove really, Mike.
I suppose if Somerset left Out Marcus it might not be easy to defend such a charge. Although having said that I suppose you just say that he has a slight niggle.

Who is this overseas bowler we need then?
I don't dispute a quality overseas bowler would be most welcome, however
* They need to be available for the MAJORITY of the season *
If not i personally would much prefer JL (or eqivalent quality senior batsmen) from April to September than say Steyn (for example) for 6 weeks and then he gets called to a training camp then orderred to rest etc.
