The parlous state of Premiership rugby and the relief of not having to fight relegation means there's not much cash being flashed this summer. Gloucs have announced the new squad which admirably gives a berth to five former London Irish players, but considering last season's second bottom finish doesn't push any boats away from the jetty.

No 8 Zach Mercer is the biggest signing after impressing at Bath and then Montpellier and will be looking to strengthen his England credentials.Max Llewellyn has also raised a few eyebrows after leaving Cardiff after coming through their Academy and was the Player's Player of the Season.

Back rows: Albert Tuisue, Jack Clement, Lewis Ludlow, Ruan Ackermann, Zach Mercer,

Half-backs: Adam Hastings, Caolan Englefield, Charlie Chapman, George Barton, Stephen Varney,

I’m puzzled as to how Mercer didn’t make it into the England squad. It's a classic case of the face not fitting. Despite his quite unbelievable performances and stats, England coaches just don't like dynamic 8s. What were they all thinking? They really ought to read up on his history. And consider it when making their selections. We're so limited in our view of the game that it is so frustrating to watch as a fan sometimes. The All Black and Ireland setups allow players to play for the national team like they do for their club teams...which is how you get the best out of a player
