The principle of ring fencing any league competition is wrong. It stifles ambition, goes on to reward mediocrity and prevents clubs like Exeter Chiefs achieving their rightful ambition, after all every dog it entitled to have its day. However, waking up after a disastrous defensive display against Saiunts and looking at a league table which sees us three points adrift, you can see why ring fencing is atractive to everyone who invests in their club eother financially or emotioinally.

It look as though relegation will be put on hold this season in view of the pandemic. That's a solid argument,  on a purely one-off basis, and it may well mean that the Cherry and Whites avoid their first ever relegation.

Northampton Saints are another club who have fallen from grace, but they were well worth their 31-26 win at Kingsholm by virtue of the fact that they exposed our defensive frailties out wide.

Three tries in 10 minutes after the break did for us. We were all over the place.

That after we scored on of the tries of the season. Ollie Thorley raced round the defense and put Willi Heinz in with a superb reverse pass when they were both travelling at speed. A remarkable skill. 

As a result we went in at half time  12-11 up - Saints' George Furbank and Santiago Carreras having both come off after a horrible accidental head clash. Best wishes to both.

We had a late rally to earn a bonus point, but it was scant consolation for thet defensive capitulation.
