Glaws fingers crossed for Christmas

Gloucester have a number of reasons to keep their fingers crossed over the Christmas season, perhaps the most important reason being that they need to get last weekend’s disappointing home defeat against La Rochelle out of their system and get back to winning ways.

The club as a whole will be hoping the weather relents enough to allow the sell-out Boxing Day game against Northampton to go ahead, and if it is played Bryan Redpath will be hoping that his team and quickly bounce back from the Amlin setback.

But lock Dave Attwood has a major reason for hoping that the festive season brings him some luck as he faces a disciplinary showdown after being accused of stamping early in last weekend’s game.
He has been cited for the alleged incident involving La Rochalle’s Romanian prop, who suffered a fractured cheekbone and damaged teeth.
La Rochelle were not at all pleased by what they saw, and Attwood’s fate is in the hands of the ERC disciplinary committee, who have to decide whether it was deliberate or accidental. If they go for the former, Attwood could face a lengthy ban.
Meanwhile, prop Nick Wood says that the defeat has given Glaws a sharp kick up the backside and hopes the side as a whole will react in a positive manner.
However, there are many who might have thought the defeats at Exeter and Newcastle also gave Glaws kicks up the backside.
How many dio they need before they find some consistency?
The truth is that Glaws have lost too many times already this season to teams they really should be beating, and it’s a weakness which is already costing hem an, in the long run, could make them pay a very heavy price.
For all their talents and for all their strength in depth, Glaws have an alarming weakness in this respect.
Northampton are beginning to show signs of running away with the Premiership, with an eight-point lead and a game in hand on second and third teams Leicester and London Irish.
Glaws owe it to the Premiership to beat them on Boxing Day to prevent the Prem from becoming a one-horse race, and to prevent their own season from disintegrating.
As long as the game is played - fingers crossed for Christmas.
