Another defeat increases the pressure on Glaws

Better, but still not good enough. That’s the verdict on Gloucester’s third defeat in a row as Saracens edged them out with a second-half fightback at Vicarage Road. Glaws didn’t play as badly as they did against Northampton a week earlier, but despite leading for more than an hour, they were still not quite up to the task.
Bryan Redpath described the display against Northampton as unacceptable, and he got something like a response against Sarries, but the stark truth based on the first four games of the season is that Glaws are not the trophy-winning threat they used to be and are extremely unlikely to take any serious part in this season’s big decisions in any competition.
Rory Lawson’s early try was converted by Nicky Robinson, who also kicked three penalties, but Sarries claimed victory with a late Schalk Brits try and Glen Jackson kicked 14 points as Sarries went back to the top of the GP table.
It was a poor game again featured by a lack of discipline in the Glaws team, with penalties given away cheaply and Lawson becoming the fifth Glaws player to be sin-binned this season.
Apart from Lawson’s early try, there were only rare glimpses of a real threat from Glaws, the best coming when Lesley Vainikolo went on a barnstorming run (above) before unloading to Robinson, but he was caught just short of the line.
At the end of the first month of the season, with four games played, the prospects are looking gloomy as a Glaws team which has lost a handful of top performers has failed to go anywhere near reaching its full potential and that means the rest of the season threatens to turn into a catch-up exercise for Redpath’s team.
