Kane, Dier & Calvert-Lewin Excellent

I took in a few games this weekend and paid close attention to England players and potential England players as I try to formulate in my own head who England should be selecting.

The first game I watched this weekend was the Spurs Man City match. In this I thought Eric Dier was immense at centre half. If he can produce performances like this on more a consistent basis then Southgate should have no worries in going back to a back four but he will need to show that he can do this over a sustained period.

Kane despite not scoring had another terrific performance and assisted yet again. Playing so well and not scoring just fuels more debate as to whether he should be play up front or as a number 10.

On Sunday I watched the Fulham and Everton match where Dominic Calvert-Lewin produced a complete centre forward performance. He scored two goals but what I am pleased with is that he’s getting in the positions and scoring 6 yard tap ins. Also his hold up play and the way he brings others in to play is brilliant.

You can’t fault Pickford for the goals and I felt Keane had a decent game for Everton at centre back. I was however impressed with Loftus-Cheek when he came on for Fulham.

I have been critical of him in the past. I think he has everything in his locker to be the complete midfielder but has previously struggled to impose himself on games. I think he should have been nowhere near the England squad at the last world cup.

To be fair to the lad, injuries have played a big part in his stuttering career so far and without doubt when he came on in this one he helped shift the momentum in Fulham’s direction and played extremely well.

A one for the future look, Lookman? He was direct and pacey and involved in some nice passages of play with Loftus-Cheek on the right hand side for Fulham.

My final games of the weekend was the Leeds Arsenal match. I was interested to take a close look at Rob Holding in this one. When he first started getting in to the Arsenal team before his injury I thought he was nailed on for an England call at some stage.

I have not seen much of him this season but I thought he was poor yesterday and way down the pecking order for a look in with England.

Saka looked good when he came on, all be it very briefly before he was injured. He should have scored though and I think he needs a bit more confidence in himself at times with things such as shooting.

Kalvin Phillips for Leeds is head and shoulders a better player than Jordan Henderson as a holding midfielder. One thing I will give Henderson credit for is that he gets around the pitch well. Phillips does that as well as being able to do things that Henderson can’t such as pass and tackle.
