Capello defends Green decision

Terry consoles Green

England boss Fabio Capello this evening defended his decision to name goal keeper Robert Green in the starting line up, despite his epic error which left England with just one point in a game that fans expected them to win.

Capello stuck true to his word of not naming his final starting XI until 2 hours before kick off, a decision that is now up for criticism.  Some fans and sports journalists alike, agree that naming the squad so close to the game took awat vital mental preparation time for the players, a factor which will be open to far more scrutiny as England prepare for their second Group C fixture against Algeria next Friday.

Green fumbled a 25-yard shot from Clint Dempsey and watched the ball spin behind him and trickle agonisingly over the line.  But Capello feels he has no need to defend his decision to include Green as England's keeper after he impressed during England's friendly with Mexico and performed well throughout West Ham's Premiership campaign last season.

Capello has refrained from commenting on whether Green will make the starting line up against Algeria, instead commenting that he needs to sit down and talk through the mistake with Green until a final decision is made.  He commended Green for his second half save against Altidore's point blank shot, and stated that making mistakes was sometimes an unfortunate part of being a goal keeper.

England Captain Steven Gerrard has also spoke out in defence of Green, with Green himself promising to bounce back from the mistake without letting it affect the rest of his world cup campaign.
