Little Miss Chief looks back on a memorable day at Kingsholm where Exeter Chiefs win, not only for the 1st time in the Premiership but the 1st time in 250 years!
CHIEFS TRIUMPH AT KINGHOLM!
My biggest decision of Saturday was whether to wear shorts toGloucester. All the forecasters were saying it was going to be warm and sunny. I listened, and boy I’m glad I did. I arrived atApple Laneto catch one of the supporter’s buses, and just after 10.30 we left en route to Kingholm. I, and no doubt many others (although they probably won’t admit it), was hoping not to be hammered byGloucesteron their home turf and come away with a losing bonus point. There was however a sneaky thought in the back of my mind that if the Chiefs could play how they did against Sale and Leicester, then perhaps we could beat them but we could ill afford to give Gloucester aheadstart and had to contain them from the off to stand any chance of achieving a victory.
Well, any doubts I may have had were very quickly dispelled as Ex clearly meant business. They not only contained Gloucesterbut dominating play from the outset. After a couple of exchange of penalty kicks at the beginning between Mieres and Burns, Ex turned on their try machine in the glorious sunshine. A superb offload from Chris Whiteheadresulting in the 1st ever try for Craig Mitchell in a Chiefs shirt, and shortly after withGloucester down to 14 men after Jim Hamilton decided to punch Hayden in the face, Chiefs took full advantage with Jessy crossing the whitewash and suddenly Chiefs were 15-3 up. There could have been a bigger margin had the TMO awarded a try at the end of the first half. The Tribe were doing their nut in the Shed, and in full singing voice, whereas theGloucester fans were stunned into silence going into half time. I could hardly believe what I was seeing either.
If the first half had your pulses racing, that was nothing compared to what was about to come. Gloucesterfound another gear in the second half and scored 3 tries in the space of 7 minutes. Suddenly the Chiefs were on the back foot, and the chanting from the Tribe became drowned out byGloucesterfans. That was until 5 minutes from the end when sustained pressure from Ex, a string of penalties, and a cheeky kick from Steeno, there was a final push by the forwards over the whitewash for a try, or so the players thought. The try decision was left once more to the TMO, who after a long and agonising wait, awarded the try scored by Aly. Steeno duly converted and a thoroughly deserving victory was ours. The Chiefs had triumphed in Kingsholm!
The Shed was now on fire! Gloucesterhad experienced the tomahawk chop in full glory complete with the drums! The chop was echoing around the stadium, and continued long after the match was over. The players, coaches, our very own Mr Baxter the Tribe and Mieres’ mum were all jubilant and rightly so. I feel so proud to be a Chiefs fan, and am still smiling after the result over the weekend.
TheGloucesterfans were brilliant and the banter in the Shed was great. A conversation I had with a Gloucester fan just as I was getting on the bus is a real accolade to us, when he not only wished us luck in reaching the premiership playoff and Stade, but he also said that if we reach the premiership final then he will be buying a Chiefs shirt and will be going to Twickenham to cheer on the Chiefs!
I can’t wait for this coming weekend! Bring on the Exiles!
, sorry for the delay, was away from my PC for a few days
