Newcastle have joined the race to sign Gills star Matt Jarvis claims todays 'Mirror'. Newcastle are currently struggling with a serious injury crisis and manager Glenn Roeder has apparently joined the race for what the 'Mirror' describes as the most wanted player in the transfer window. Jarvis has been linked with nearly every Premiership and Championship club this season despite claiming that he is happy at Gillingham.

The likes of Arsenal, Manchester UTD, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham UTD have all been linked with the Gillingham star but the serious contenders for Jarvis appear to be Charlton, Watford and now Newcastle UTD who are claimed to all be prepared to meet Scally's evaluation of £800,000 for the Gillingham star.

Recently Scally said that players may need to be sold in order to bring new players in the January window, and with Gillingham boss Ronnie Jepson claiming he wants to bring in new talent, Jarvis seems all the more likely to leave come January. Speaking to the Kent on Sunday, Scally said "We work out a budget at the start of the season and that remains the same. The only way money can be freed up is if players are sold." This could mean an end to Matt Jarvis' career at Priestfield. Despite the star saying he is happy at Priestfield for now, if no funds are available Jepson may have to make the hard choice on whether to gamble and keep Jarvis for the rest of the season and hope he signs a new contract extension, or cash in on the star player and bring in quality players whilst freeing up some money for wages.

Scally continued, "At this stage I don't know what Ronnie's plans are. The reality is that we've had no phone calls for players yet and don't expect any until January. You don't talk to players and sign a deal three weeks later. You talk to them and then look to clinch a deal in days.

"It is a case of waiting to see what happens. I don't know what the interest level in our players is going to be like. Only at that point will Ronnie and I sit down to work out who he wants or who wants to let go."

Before the defeat at Yeovil Ronnie Jepson said," I've got a list of players and will have a chat with the chairman and see if we can bring them in January. I'm looking to strengthen all threough the side.

"If we can get some point on board, come January we can be in a healthy position so I can knock on the chairmans dorr for that push. If we're not, I'll still knock on his door to see if he can help us out. We will see where we are up to then."

Matt Jarvis made his senior debut against Sunderland three years ago. During his Gillingham career Matty has found the net fifteen times, five of those coming this season.

After impressing with same occasional senior appearences and impressive reserve and youth games, Jarvis was rewarded a senior contract - which he signed at th final home game of the season in May 2004. Matty scored his first ever senior goal in the one nil victory over Wolves during the 04-05 season.

Last season Jarvis won 'Young Player of the Year' award and the 'Goal of the Season' award and has been Gillingham's star performer this season.
