Coming Soon to Albion To Save the Planet - And The Budget!

Watch out for new ones!

Anyone who's been to Twickenham lately - or even away with Albi Travel to Ampthill, Bishop's Stortford, Rosslyn Park (pic) or the like will be familiar with the concept of "durable plastics".

Instead of those flimsy vessels (that you need two of, anyway) with a tendancy to send beer running down your leg as soon as your heart rate goes up, your ale is served in a stouter item with a logo on the front/sides. These smart items are made for multiple usage and tick all the boxes on safety, legality, hygiene and kindness to the environment. Thanks to an extraordinarily commited supporter who has coughed up a pretty sizeable wedge to help out PARFC, we will shortly have our own version at Brickfields.

Here's the how and why. Last year, there was a sizeable hole in the PARFC catering budget due to expensive plastic "glasses" ending up in the bins after a single use. Nobody told us not to, so they ended up in the trash with the pastie crusts and sweet wrappers. If they weren't transported to somewhere like Cheslton Meadow, they'd be converted to a puff of smoke from the incinerator at Camel's Head. No way to Save the Planet - or the accountant's heart condition.

The new items (which will have Albion, 200 Club and Albi Travel logos on) are specifically designed for multiple use, high temperature washing and top drawer marketing. Naturally, these little babies don't come cheap - and being all logoed up, are quality souvenirs for home and away fans alike. So when you buy your favourite bevvy, you will pay £1 deposit which is refundable when it is returned to the bar. Fancy having one at home, a little bit OCD and worried about "getting a lurgy"? Just hang on to it, bring it back next week and you'll be drinking from your glass. Take it to away games, and you can fly the flag and avoid the £1 when ordering your pint of Old Sloane or whatever they serve in the posh SE.

OK; don't forget this is a dockyard town. A good few of the Albion faithful will be familiar with the concept (if not the actual practice) of "minesweeping", whereby unscrupulous buccaneering marines and matelots (and I'm sure, the odd Jenny too) would save themsleves the general inconvenience and financial disadvantage of procuring their own drink by serruptitiously half-inching somebody else's. (The occasional dance floor romeo would leave his false teeth in a half-finished beer to discourage the marauding military miscreants.) Right! That swanky branded drinking vessel now has some "inherent worth". Not exactly the Bitcoin of the rugby world, but it will get £1 back for whoever takes it to the relevant outlets. Keep your eye/hand on your drink to avoid disappointment, all right? And don't be surprised to see keen little kids going through the bins at FT or offering the "socially confused" punter the chance to "Take your glass back to the bar, sir/madam?" It's called enterprise culture...

The whisper is that the new items are actually on site, but there's been no official word yet on when they will be introduced. Be ready for it and do your bit for the Earth and Albion's prosperity.

Excellent idea to cut out single-use plastic. Is there a system to avoid having to queue for ages at a bar to get a refund if required? Somewhere to easily get your refund if needed?

My suggestion would be to take it home with you and bring it back, so you're all ready to go next time.

Bit inconvenient if you're heading off to the Savoy for dinner after a game, but I'm sure the maitre d' will understand...

Come cheer up, my lads - 'tis to glory we steer!
