Albion Ladies put in an outstanding performance but just fail at the very last seconds for the second week running.

Sunday saw Hove visit Brickfields on a sunny November afternoon and with a delayed start and Vee taking the team manager role Albion got off to a bad start as they were caught off-side and gave away a penalty right in front of the posts. Before the second minute was on the clock Albion were behind 0 - 3.

Albion took this and raised their game and in the 14th minute after spending most of the time in the visitors half they levelled the score with a penalty. 3 - 3

Albion's defence was outstanding including full back and captain Susie Kendal stopping their winger who went down hard after being taken into touch. But after considerable pressure on the right hand side as the clock was ticking down for the turn around Hove switched the play to the left hand side. With much speed that managed to touch down by the corner flag despite the covering defence. 3 - 8.

In the last play of the half Hove tried a similar move but this time the Albion defence was prepared and managed to take the play into touch to the sound of the halftime whistle.

Just 5 minutes into the second half and Albion now playing into a strong gusty wind they had a throw in awarded on the Hove 22 and used the resultant phases to make their way towards the line. After an initial break through the defence the ball was passed to Sophie Gummer to touch down and Nancy Stone adding the extras 10 - 8

Albion were doing well and in the lead for the first time in the match but after a long break for an injury Hove regrouped and playing there switch move from left to right made hard work of their 3 man overlap but ran in to take the lead again in the 17th minute of the second half. 10 - 13

Albion were quick to try to get back into the points but in the 19th and 28th minutes were foiled at the line the second of these the ball was dislodged by Hove as Albion went over the line.

With only two minutes of normal time left Jo Holden broke through a mass of players to race the 15 metres to the line and with two Hove defence attempting to stop her she still managed to touch down on the left wing. 15 - 13

Hove now need to make that final score and they took the play down into Albion's 22. They received a number of dubious decisions including a high tackle going unpunished and obstruction by the referee in the final play of the game. Albion would only have needed one of these to go their way and they would have come away with their first win of the season.

Hove took the ball from the right off the back of a ruck and took the play to the posts to touch down. The extras were collected and despite several long breaks for injury only 3 minutes of extra time were allowed and the ref did not allow Albion the chance to get back again.

It was a great game to watch with Albion playing the best they had all season but they just need to hang onto the lead in the dieing minutes of the match. Next week sees them travel to St Albans knowing that Albion are playing as a good team that just need to give that extra 1% to collect the win.
