Straightline testing for BMW in Vairano to check new aero

Testing is not allowed during the 2009 Formula One season. However, the teams have the chance to do so-called straight line tests. The BMW Sauber F1 Team test and reserve driver, Christian Klien, completed such a test on Sunday at the wheel of a BMW Sauber F1.09. In Vairano, Italy, Christian gathered data on the new development package, comprising a new front wing, more deeply undercut sidepods, a further developed double diffuser, a modified rear wing and a new gearbox.

"These straight line tests are an important indicator," said the Austrian. "Up to that point, all developments and calculations were solely done in the wind tunnel. Only if you can compare the data with that collected during track running, do you really get an impression as to whether the updates work as predicted by the computers."
