While Nick Heidfeld has employed the new KERS system in the first two races of the 2009 Formula One season, Robert Kubica has had to do without the Kinetic Energy Recovery System due to weight and balance issues. "I think KERS is advantageous in race situations like overtaking and defending your position, and definitely for the start," says Robert.

Looking back at the first two World Championship races of the 2009 season, the 23-year-old feels that cars using KERS had a greater advantage in Malaysia than at the first race of the season in Australia. "As the distance from the start line to the first corner is much greater, so the gain for the KERS cars is bigger."

"However, you could already see in Melbourne that KERS does make a difference," Robert continues. "If you take the situation between Fernando Alonso and Timo Glock: Fernando was much slower, but he was boosting on every straight and Timo just didn't have the opportunity to pass."

The BMW Sauber F1 Team is currently working on creating a situation which allows KERS to represent an advantage for Robert. Up until now, the Pole's relatively heavy body weight has made it difficult to find a perfect weight distribution and balance on his BMW Sauber F1.09. The team will decide whether or not to use KERS on a race-by-race basis.
