Bolton Wanderers in form defender Andy O'Brien has called time on his international career with the Republic of Ireland after winning a total of twenty six caps for the national side over the past seven years;

O'Brien was included in the Irish squad for the first time in twelve months for tonight's friendly against Brazil at Croke Park and caretaker manager Don Givens had earmarked the 28-year old centre back for an important role in the team.

Reasons for the former Newcastle United and Portsmouth man's shock decision remain undisclosed after he held talks with Givens about his international future this week.

One of the highlights of O'Brien's career at international level was being included in Mick McCarthy's 23 man squad for the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan & Korea.
