Bolton Wanderers manager Sammy Lee has added to his defensive options by bringing in Republic of Ireland international Andy O'Brien from Portsmouth on an initial two year contract with an option of a one year extension.

The fee paid to Pompey remains undisclosed but it is beleived to be somewhere in the region of £1.2 million for the former Bradford City and Newcastle United player.

O'Brien spent four and a half years with Newcastle alongside current Wanderers player coach Gary Speed and during his time on Tyneside he proved to be a good loyal professional.

Wanderers manager Sammy Lee was delighted to add the Yorkshire-born player as his twelvth signing of the summer transfer window.

"Andy is a great and astute acquisition for this football club. His versatility across the back line will give us greater strength in depth and options in a critical area." said the Bolton boss

The 28-year old giant could make his debut against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night after the relevant paperwork was completed.
